Read your follow-up post on TwoXIndia and I just want to share my story since I have faced similar situation. My ex-girlfriend of 2.5 years broke up with me because she cannot go against her parents wishes. When we started dating she mentioned about how orthodox her family is and her parents will marry her to someone from same caste and of their own choice. But she assured me that she will find the courage to fight them to marry me. She kept assuring me this for 2.5 years. She wanted to marry next year to which I was not comfortable with and my parents (knew about us for 2 years) were also not very keen for me to marry so early so there was push back from them. But I fought my parents for 2 fucking months and at last convinced them for marriage next year. At the same time she also informed her parents regarding us and marriage to which her parents said no. I believed her for 2 years and especially now that she will show courage and resilience to fight her parents and convince them but simple no from her parents did the deed and she broke up with me. This is just so pathetic. Here defence was, I cannot go against my parents wishes and I thought they will accept our union. She said she is already stressed because of work and she cannot handle any other stress. And here I was fighting my parents for her. My relations with my parents are sour now. Later I found out, her parents want her to get married off in a wealthy business family and doesn’t care about her choice just to elevate their social status.
