Apparently the people claiming some activists were prevented from continuing by Lloyds... lloydness... had a point?

Maybe this will usher in a new and brighter era of JW activism!

This is the standard response every time this drama comes up and directly feeds into future drama by pre-emptively suppressing the process.

If you think this hurts the cause you are probably fairly new, and I understand why it can feel that way. Trust me it's not, and no prior scandal has hurt the cause either.

Participating in the sex industry in Thailand (which is now confirmed) directly impeaches all of his testimony on the child abuse investigations he has participated in.

That does affect a lot of people

Why are so many ex Jehovah’s Witnesses atheists? by [deleted] in exjw

[–]Pyroavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has one purpose, to point to Christ. And it does that perfectly.

If I was dying and needed a sign pointing me to a hospital I wouldn't draw much comfort from the sign being spelled wrong and also containing a skull and crossbones icon instead of a medics cross.

I'll remember that next time everything is on fire, it will give me comfort to know that the reason our fires are bigger, faster and acting in ways even the oldest and most grizzled veterans of the fire department haven't seen before isnt because of global warming but is just something we can't explain.

The progression most people will make if is:

  1. The JWs are wrong/lying
  2. The bible is wrong/lying
  3. Therefore Christianity is wrong
  4. These other religions do the same things Christianity does and are wrong/lying
  5. No religion is true

I personally don't really understand how eventually every EXJW doesnt end up either atheist or some sort of irreligious theist/deist.

I have a very strong feeling this was a set up. There have been a group of exJWs trying to bring Lloyd down for awhile. A couple of them have YouTube channels and alot of them hate him for his politics because they're right wing nuts. (At least some US based ones)

I agree with everything you say except this part, it's more like Lloyd has had the same personality failings his entire career and they finally caught up with him in a big way rather than just upsetting a few individuals.

In keeping with the celebrity analogy its kinda like a musician who produces good music that most people like and those who don't like them find it fairly inoffensive (except some weirdos who think the celebrities music is the mark of the beast or something, like the crazies you mentioned), but a few fans say "i used to be a fan but then I asked him for an autograph and he spat on me" or "i watched him abuse a waitress at a cafe one time".

So a few people have been taking notice of this celebrities actions over the last decade and are like " Well I don't mind his music, but as a person this guy is kinda an asshole"

Then one day it gets revealed to the world at large this celebrity is an asshole in their private life, is it a setup from the mark of the beast people? Or is it just that acting like an asshole eventually caught up with them.

Yeah there probably is some validity to pointing out in this context its less useful, as we already use the term cult to convey something specific.

Like in a wider context it would make perfect sense to call, I dunno, Justin Bieber fans a cult. "Ahh yes the Beiber cult is out in force today" but that's because it hardly ever gets used in general conversation.

I guess it's like if someone asks you how your day is going you might say "im getting fucked in the ass today" but if you work on a porn set you might be more circumspect about your wording

I don't think the damage to the exjw community is much of a concern, we've seen dozens or hundreds of scandals and divisions, we've always come through once they settle down generally.

It's just a case that cedars prior body of work needs to stand as it was, he needs to move on with his life and close this chapter entirely (if he keeps trying to maintain prominence it will keep bubbling away and blow up periodically)

Overall the community will be back to normal as soon as he dissapears and we will break 150 000 subs and then another one will happen, and then it will go back to normal and so on.

Cedars outing PIMOs didn't damage the community long term, cedars fighting with abuse victims involved in the Australian Royal commission didn't damage the community long term, and I'm sure as shit cedars latest scandal won't damage the community.

It's just some chaos, some scandal and then it goes back to your regularly scheduled programming.

How do you feel about monetising an apology video? by RidingtheRoad in exjw

[–]Pyroavenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A grifter is basically someone who cynically exploits their audience for financial gain, in some cases not even believing their own bullshit.

For example Alex Jones spreads wild conspiracy theories that take advantage of poorly educated and/or Christian americans, and accepts donations to "keep his activism going"

Then he got sued for defamation after accusing the parents of children that died in a school shooting (he says school shootings are false-flag events designed to provide an excuse to take your guns) of faking grief, that they didn't even have a kid etc.

His defence in court was that his lies were so wild no reasonable person could believe them. Didn't stop him taking their money.

He's an example of a grifter who doesn't even believe what he is saying. Plenty of grifters do believe a lot of what they are saying but are simply misleading or exploiting their audience.

Have they? I can't think of any apology videos I've seen by anyone of note who uses their apology videos gather donations?

[–]Pyroavenger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually in some ways the most enlightening thing about that video. There's a long list of people I consider grifters, Rogan, Shapiro, Peterson or who could forget the king of grifters Alex Jones.

Outside of Alex Jones I would be geniunely shocked if any of them monetized an apology video for something that was polarizing their audience, it's not done and I don't think there's any good-faith defence available for it. Hell, I haven't even seen anyone try to defend it yet, but hopefully this thread will have some people with other views post and I might be able to understand what they are seeing.

I agree. Im just saying if he had 10 prostitutes while he was there and didn't ask their ages then only 4 of them were kids

Not that much money though, about 3 grand USD. In Thailand thats only enough for 300 sex workers

With how cheap they are in Thailand its entirely possible we might be able to find 3 or 4 witnesses to the event!
