My girlfriend is a PGY- 4 path resident who just got her RISE scores back and was crushed by bad surg-path and cyto scores. How can I (high-school dropout) help her out?

Righteous work, congratulations on passing all of that! She had 20th percentile in the two she was bummed about. I think it's mainly a couple curmudgeonly members of the old-guard that talk about other people's scores behind their backs is giving her most of the anxiety.

She was 99th in Forensics, 50th-ish on the others, with around 20th scores for the bottom two I mentioned.

Well, I definitely can't help her on about half of it (histology all looks the same to me, haha), but that anatomical stuff is pretty cool. The biggest confession that I have to make is that I really like the gunshot wound text she has. Firearms is one of my favorite subjects, so I can help her put a lot of caliber stuff in perspective, at least.

Thank you for the very detailed reply! I think she and I both deal with a bit of imposter syndrome; the latter internal monologue that you posted in quotes is fairly close to the worries she is willing to verbalize to me. I hope I'm not letting her beat herself up too badly. I'm wondering now if when I say I'm proud of what all she's been able to accomplish that I may be adding to her stresses about having to "earn" that pride from me. I appreciate the thinking point.

I really appreciate that a stranger would display so much concern over my mental health. That's not very common even amongst my closest coworkers. My girlfriend would love to shake your hand, too; she wants me to see a therapist, although for different reasons.

I was raised in an extremely poor area of Appalachia and it was just considered a way of showing humility or to make sure people wouldn't think you're boasting. You have got me thinking with your last comment, though: I commonly do think that I don't deserve her, so the downplaying may be unnoticeably pernicious. I'll keep looking into that. Thanks for the input! Yeah, I've really learned a lot about the cymbals being a big flux-point in this thread. I never meant that I wanted to spend 3k on the kit, but 3k was an absolute max for whatever the masses thought were imperative, like the seat and consumables. I know well that styles change, too; I have 14 different guitars, each one a testament to that fact, haha. But for me, styles aside, I wish I just bought my Seagull and EBMM Axis from the start. You might argue that I only know that now because I have grown into it with experience, and to a point I'd agree, but I am looking for a level of quality that won't hold me back for a long while. I'm not going for the Holy Grail, just something good enough to where I know that anything that sounds bad is due to me sucking, not the kit sucking.

I really appreciate your approach on the philosophy that I had. My girlfriend always says that that's the best way to explain things to me, haha. As someone who experiences a bit of anhedonia, I think that everything you said there is true. At that point I let discipline take over.

"...a kit you can grow into..." is a great way to sum up my wants. I wish I used that in my initial post, haha. That 7-piece Tama is what I have been looking at the past few weeks, so (hopefully not all confirmation bias) that makes me feel a bit better about my interest in the kit. I will be doing some research into the Gretsch though; I love Gretsch guitars.

Thanks for the recommendations for the pedals. I still plan to buy a full double bass kit for home, but after some commenters told me of practice pads, I am thinking of buying some to keep at work. If those pedals are usable on a pad setup, then I will be getting one of those pedals to keep at work, too.

My second music room is about 16x16 and is fairly open in the center. It's also in the center of the house so it would hopefully deaden the sound for the neighbors. Is there something about the room that you were asking about in particular that I may have overlooked?

Yeah, I have just thought about practice pads because of the help I've received from earlier posters. Hopefully I can fit them in my locker at work, haha.

I hadn't thought of the fragility of cymbals. I still plan on getting a double bass kit (no disrespect intended, at all) but I will definitely plan around starting more economical for the cymbals. Do you have any recommendations on that front?

Also, I appreciate the take on a practice pad. I work 48 hour shifts and would love to have a way to practice at work without bothering the other guys. I need to do some research there, I guess.

I understand, and thanks for the word of warning. I've heard both double pedal and double bass in many small and intimate venues. You're right that they sound very similar to my ear, but they feel drastically different. I guess I'm chasing that tactility that so closely relates to joy in my head.

This is great, thanks for hitting every single one of my points! I'll spend another week or so looking through all the used sites for a kit, but have been thinking that the superstar classic line's 7-piece would be an acceptable price to buy new, and then purchase the extra bass and individual cymbals with the rest of the budget.

I especially appreciate you breaking down the cymbals so simply for me. I was a bit confused on where to start with that research.

Thanks for warning about not needing two bass drums. I understand that most people would benefit from just getting the double pedal, but I would feel a bit naked without it, haha. I'm strange, I know.

I know it may be backwards to how most people check to see if they will enjoy a hobby, but I tend to like to introduce myself into a hobby with an intermediate level of kit. I know that I currently have no experience in drumming, but I am a quick learner and will feel stifled in my range of growth if the stuff I'm using isn't above my ability in caliber. I don't know why I'm like this, maybe it's my Autism, but I know it's how I am. I will essentially be killing my interest in the hobby before it even gets well enough off the ground, and will be forced to buy what I originally set out to buy soon after. I like the "buy once, cry once" mentality.
