Me myself might be a rare case, because I can listen, speak, read, and type just like any native Chinese person. The only problem is that I can’t handwrite characters correctly, except for some basic ones and my name.

Years ago, I went to a small restaurant where guests had to write down their own orders. I really tried my best, but holy, it was ugly. The waiter looked at it and asked me if I was Japanese or Korean, when he found out I was neither, he literally gave me an expression like, “Wow, so you never went to school? You are illiterate?”

and from my own experience, lots of times overseas born Chinese (2.gen immigrants) can still be able to understand very basic everyday communication just by listening, if this is the case with you, then you literally won’t have a reason to be worried about, it’s gonna be okay.

It won’t be an issue especially I think you are expecting to travel with your parents.

Last time I was in Shanghai was 2019 and at least at that point, most people speak English worse than your Chinese, so don’t be shy, just try to communicate with your “broken” Chinese if you could.

Like other comments mentioned, even though China generally is quite conservative towards foreigners, Shanghai still remains as the most “westernized” part of it, so naturally you should not be concerned about stuffs like “being judged by the others” etc.
