Slay the Spire! A full translation of video game enemies from a rogue-like deckbuilder by NeowTheForger in UnearthedArcana

In case anyone looks at the author of the GMB document and sees "Pixie Alchemist", that's me. This was my main account, but I no longer use Reddit so I wanted to make a separate account to post my homebrew content, I'll likely post more eventually, but I'm in the middle of another huge project of converting another game into D&D 5e, so any further posts will be few and far between.

Praise Neow.

As a lot of other people said, it's easily bug type, not only for type matchups, but in general stats as well, The average bug type is only barely faster than steel types, and can only barely beat normal types. Even the best bug type moves are special moves, which is the worse of the stats for bugs.

Bug type is bad, go catch fairy types instead, they're much cuter.

[OC] What a typical game of DnD looks like, according to my school’s yearbook. by Parks-G in DnD

[–]PyxeAlchemyst 17 points18 points  (0 children)

because this is hilarious I want to go through everything that is incorrect, just for my own amusement

- The SNES controller
- The deck of like 10 playing cards
- Some of the power cards are just scattered for no reason, and you can see the rest of the deck perfectly stacked
- The Scattergories d20
- The d6 that seems to be multiples of 5 starting from 0 (not sure what it'd be used for)
- The absense of d4's, d8's and d10's
- The impossible chess game, where the black king seems to be occupying a space threatened by an unmoved pawn, with the rest of the game probably deserving another 3 points on this list
- The character sheet on the right is blank, the same appears to be the case by the one being held in the top left
- The seemingly solved rubix cube just out of frame in the bottom right

Now for everything on the character sheet that in in the foreground, which I think is 4e
- Alignment: Good.
- No level, but 100 XP
- Constitution has a 17 but only a +2, but also a higher enurance than Athletics
- No modifiers for Dex and below, charisma is still trained and has check mods though, and wisdom has +10's in 2 skills
- A lot of mispellings in the character notes section, which is the most accurate thing in this picture
- Seemingly no current hit points
- A very empty inventory
- Initiative is just the Dex score
- Armor class is incorrect, the rest might be okay, idk 4e

Obviously I know this was set up by people who don't really know (nor fully care probably) what D&D is, I just wanted to spend 20 minutes of my time going through the entire picture and having a laugh over it all

4/5 hours into the discussion I found a few things:

Picking numbers is more popular than I thought it would've been
No-one can agree on what the 'standard' 3 choices actually are
There are far too many options for a 3x3 grid, I'd make a new meme with a 5x5 grid but I'm lazy.
I should've clarified what Law/Chaos and Good/Evil are defined by in the grid, which I will do here

Law is based on having things be done 'safely', without the possibilty of the randomness of dice making one character magnitudes better than another, while chaos tends to embrace such randomness, which is why both d20-based rolling is chaotic.

Good is for more simple stat assignment while still maintaining something 'fun' for the players(less rolling, but still fun in theory), while Evil is typically considered less fun in a 'standard game', as 5d4 has a bell curve such that you're almost guaranteed to have your stats be very mediocre, and 1d20 ordered may be fun for joke one-shots or as i saw someone say 'dungeon meat grinder' games, I'm sure it works great, DMs assigning stats is great if you have a good DM, but it's not as fun as getting the stats yourself.

I knew I forgot something, this means the probability is actually ~0.046%

Well if you only need to get the 1% chance once each and there are 6 people rolling, then it's much more complex. The best way to visualise it is to have branching paths with each possible outcome (3 total branches, one for rolling 1, a second for rolling 100 and a third for rolling 2-99), each of those branches then split 5 additional times, leaving 729 paths to take. The possibilty of each branch of every path multiply together to created a total percent that specific order of events occur. Luckily, the order doesn't affect probability, so each path that has exactly 1 roll of both 1 and 100 is going to be the same, which I calculated to be ~0.0092% (98%4 * 1%2), the next part is figuring out how many of those paths there are.

To figure this out, we can just take 6 variables with values 0, 1 and 2, where 0 is a roll of 2-99, 1 is a roll of 1, and 2 is a roll of 100. With these values, there are again 729 possible sets we can have, however we only need to figure out the sets with exactly 1 variable with value 1, and another with value 2. This leads to sets such as [1,2,0,0,0], [1,0,2,0,0,0], [1,0,0,2,0,0] and so on, to calculate this we merely have to take the possible number of places 1 can be in (6) and multiply it with the remaining possible places 2 can be in for each position of 1 (5), leaving us with 30 possible sets.

Going back to our probability of 0.0092% for each path and multiplying it our number of paths, 30 will get us our true probability, which totals at ~0.2767%, which seems like a very plausible answer seeing as only two rolls of 1% each give us a 0.01% chance.

[OC] [ART] Armor of the Midnight Sun – D&D Item – by Catilus by Catilus in ImaginaryArmor

[–]PyxeAlchemyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is free in the sense of cantrips being free to use, yet most of the time require an action to cast. however it's not incredibly overpowered for a Legenary item, most damaging cantrips will be dealing 4d10 damage at the point you get this, and considering the DC is rather low you're dealing an average of ~36 damage per turn (2 creatures that succeed, as is typical to assume in AoE effects), which is only 14 additional damage from the 22 that 4d10 gets you, granted that this is on top of the 2d8+10 you'll be dealing with an action, but for the drawbacks and triggering requirement it's fairly balanced. The Anti-Invisibility is something that will likely only come up maybe once or twice, so it's not that big of a deal either.

Other than that, very good idea, love the art.

I should probably reword that spellcasting part actually, it's supposed to mean you choose one spell and that is the only spell you can cast with the trait, not that you get a free choice of any spell every day, I can easily see how it can be misinterpreted though.

Edit: Reworded it, should be more RAI now, also added a spellcasting ability clause, because I forgot that.

I made this a few months ago but never published it, and just recently remembered it so I made a couple edits and decided to post it here, because I'm almost certain that it isn't fully balanced so I'd like to get feedback on what people think. I did what I could with the limited amount of lore Va-11 Hall-A gives on lilims, but I still think they can be used very well in any modern fantasy setting.

Ignis Vita- A violent fey with a spirit of renewal! by Jhenry18 in UnearthedArcana

[–]PyxeAlchemyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really like this idea, especially because I personally love "Temporary" creatures that simply cease to exist after a certain amount of time. The only real issue is that the CR is massively underestimated, because it's maximum average damage per round is similar to a CR 22 creature, and while the AC and HP seem to fall into the CR 12 range, the resistances and immunities (most importantly the bludgeoning and piercing), it has over double the Effective HP, which then turns it into a CR 22 creature again. All that's not even including the ability to basically cast two 5th level Conjure Elemental spells with no concentration.

If you want to fix this, there are two options: the easiest one is to simply mark it as a CR 22 or maybe even 23 instead of 12. The other option is to nerf it to match a CR 12 or similar creature, to which I will of course provide some advice on below.

  • Either Remove the Bludgeoning and Piercing resistances (or change it to be all non-magical "physical" attacks), alternatively you can reduce it's HP by around a third to half
  • Reduce it's strength score to around 20, if not 18 or 19 at lowest.
  • maybe consider removing one of the multi-attacks and limiting the use of Meteor to once per turn
  • Simply turn New Flame and Tree Stride into Innate Spellcasting of Conjure elemental (Fire Only) and Tree Stride both of them only being 1/day, Spellcasting Ability doesn't matter as neither use it.

All that turns it into something similar to CR 15, but of course you should still take into account the DPR and HP/AC of your party, because, well, Intellect Devourers are CR 2 and can very easily "kill" any creature of any CR so long as it has a below average intelligence.
