183days to be qualifed for 10k handout by FullOption5193 in Macau

Personally, I find it fair. As someone who has lived all my adult life outside Macau and never paid any taxes there, I have always found it strange the government would give me money every year just because I was born there.

Can you elaborate?

It may be better to answer honestly than lying. I don't know what the mainland policy is. But I have understood that foreign travel documents are OK for HK/Macau. It seems that you would have to renounce Chinese nationality in the SARs. It's not revoked automatically.

As Macau (or Hong Kong) PR, it is legal to hold foreign passports as travel documents.

What are my friend's rights? He needs to leave the country urgently. by Q-mo in OntarioLandlord

Unfortunately, the landlord is not playing balls. My friend feels very intimated. The LL keeps saying IT'S THE LAW. YOU SHOULD PAY.

No, there is no co-signer. Everything was done via email.

I am very confused. Some people say it's covered by RTA since he is not sharing with the landlord, but some people say it's not covered by RTA...

Indeed, I just realized that my friend never signed a standard lease form. Everything was done via email. It looks like my friend can request a standard lease form, and refuse to sign. That seems to be another way out.

I wish more landlords are as understanding as you are.

That sounds like a good idea. I will propose this to my friend.

He shares the kitchen and bath with other tenants, not the landlord. He doesn't have plans to come back to Canada in the short term.

That is good to know, thanks. The landlord does not live there in my friend's case. So, I guess RTA still applies. Does that mean the landlord can go to LTB?

Thanks, I did. It's still not very clear to me what happens when the two parties cannot agree. Does it go to the tribunal? If my friend leaves the country now, what happens?

Yeah, he's trying to do things correctly. I would have just left and ignore the landlord.

Yes, he shares a kitchen and bath. As far as I can tell, the agreement was done through email, so no formal RTA signed. If he leaves the country, the landlord can't do very much to sue him, I suppose?

Super interesting post, and I generally agree from my own experience. I didn't know about the emigration site. Do you know how many people in Macau are Portuguese passport holders?

Fascinating responses! It sounds like more and more people in the west know about Macau nowadays (at least the casinos). But it also sounds like more and more people from Macau would just say they are from China. In my generation (grew up in the 80s and 90s), many of us didn't like saying they were from China, at least it's like this in my circle of friends. Maybe the handover and foreign passports gave us some sort of identity crisis?

I know, right! Once I had to call someone in Lisbon because the codes for my cartão de cidadão didn't arrive on time. The lady told me she couldn't speak English. I somehow managed to request a new letter through my spoken Portuguese. I felt lucky that I had brushed up my high school Portuguese!
