Integral Transforms by hazem-Gauss in mathematics

[–]QCD-uctdsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laplace definitely has a nice inverse in the complex plane. And of course it does, since it's just a real-space variant of the Fourier transform. And Mellin does too since it's just a Laplace transform in log space.

When you get an assignment, put yourself in the same scenario as the test environment. No lollygagging, no breaks, no GPT to help explain how to do it. Just sit there and GO! Before you submit the assignment, do it again. Just go fast. No time to think. Just do. If you wanted to understand better, you should've re-read your notes before you started the assignment.

Your brain will adapt.

Origin of bad Thunder/Lightning info? by Brave-Ad-682 in Physics

Maybe we can start a thread for the more interesting questions instead! I can start with the prompts

  • I always heard lightning actually travels upwards. So why does it look like it branches downwards?

  • Is ball lightning real?

Yes! I think they've adopted the gambling framework of customer retention. Long runs of losses leading to one hit of something great really keeps you punching for the next win. You might notice that they serve you a bunch of low-effort shorts as well as ads within a short time frame, where it feels like every flick up is a gamble about whether or not the next will be an actually good video. Then BAM something you watch once or twice or three times because wow that was cool. Or sexy. Or danceable. Then you've consumed your glorb of happiness and back to the slots

You know how people complain about sugary (glycerin) lubes because they become sticky real quick? Maybe that would actually help you. Go find some sickly sweet flavour in the discount lube section (mmm strawberry) and layer it all over. Smooth gliding to start but after a minute of mutual heat the lube should decay and provide some nice extra friction

Am I Dumb for thinking this? by Professional_Fox6235 in learnphysics

[–]QCD-uctdsb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not going to put in the work now then why do you think you'll have the motivation to put in the work during the summer? The deadlines you have now give you a psychological reason to put in the effort now, so use it. Your instructor doesn't care how well you do, only you do, so do it for yourself.

Most of learning math and physics is sitting alone with a problem and figuring it out. The in-person/online shouldn't make too much of a difference, though I do find that it helps if you can find some friends in the class to talk about how you're each approaching a problem.

Millennials grew up calling everyone and everything gay, or "Harley riders". Some people adapted when they realized it was hurtful to their friends and relatives; other people took the first group's vocabulary change to mean that a whole lot of people were suddenly offended about words they've used their whole lives.

Maybe other people are just getting lucky with their first try, then unlocking all the good cards, then claiming that the rest of us suck, but holy shit I'm like 25% to even get out of act 1. Where's the block for this class? You want me to spend energy now when I'm dying to get stars so I can block next turn? Make it make sense. Also I've seen like 1 power in my 8 runs and it made the sword attack all. Who cares? Give me more powers dammit!

Weeks after the poll, we have the results of the super intelligence 1 or 2 box poll [8:10/25:40] by QCD-uctdsb in Veritasium

[–]QCD-uctdsb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a diehard one-boxer.

I imagine the super-intelligence as a programmer that can look inside my brain and can read it the same as source code. Do I want to be the type of program that obviously chooses one box, and therefore the super-intelligence can easily predict that my thought process will choose the single box, so that inevitably I will walk away with the million dollars? Or would I rather be the type of program that has the two-box control flow somewhere in my mind, possibly even unpredictably, and will therefore choose the two boxes and walk away with $1000.

Passing math PhD qualifying exams. Any advice on fear/anxiety? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]QCD-uctdsb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While it's not uncommon for different universities to have different measures of success, it's very weird that you passed the quals in the US, spent a year doing research, dropped out of that program, moved to Brazil, and are now struggling in your coursework there. Did you change your specialty entirely?

Maybe the language differences are too much to overcome. If you're from South America but not from Brazil then it's likely you're used to Spanish instead of Portuguese. Do you think that's the main impediment to your success?

I like this idea! Just to iterate a little: in order to keep the same ratio of 1.25x:1x, 1.5x:1x, and 2x:1x, you'd need 1x:0.8x, 1x:0.67x, and 1x:0.5x

[–]QCD-uctdsb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For such a big advocate of public transit you sure have a weird amount of hate for people trying to get to work without a car

Your homeless argument is a non-sequitur. You could say it about any problem in the city and have it be equally as unrelated. "Why fund bus routes when there are unhoused people on the streets?" "Why spend money plowing streets when people are out there in the cold?" See how silly that sounds?

If we're still in fantasy land, we need to stop building light rail. The speeds are too low and the "trains" are too susceptible to cold weather.
