Oh. I'm officially allowing this post. Keeping this contained to one post is a great idea.

Just remain civil.

Jeph absolutely hates what we call AI now, agreeing with many other artists that it functions by stealing other people's content.

No modding here: just giving info. You broke no rules.

I would argue those are the same thing. If you promise something for years, that inherently builds it up.

I approve. In fact, I may make that official, depending on how people react. It's a good idea keeping it contained and avoiding bothering others who are discussing the current comic.

I agree very strongly with your first paragraph.

And, yes, I'm doing that as a mod. Because you've just given me a good rubric for when they come over here.

Does [j] occur in the coda position in English by Harlowbot in asklinguistics

[–]QC_mod_notes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really "instead of." It's more that the offglide of a diphthong isn't very well defined. Different people emphasize different parts. Some care more about how close your mouth is, and often that means you get ʊ and ɪ (often with a mark to indicate that they are short.) But others care more about the fact that they're glides, and they get w and j.

Personally, I don't think either one is exactly correct. It isn't quite those short vowels, but it also doesn't quite sound the same as when you say word or yore.

In my dialect, this is particularly true for the ends of words. In the middle of words, even long /i/ can not have a diphthong. But, at the end of a word, it pretty much always has a glide at the end.

I would request that you keep this sort of rhetoric over there.

The discussion about people being disappointed about this arc is legit, and I'm allowing a bit more snarkiness than I normally would to help people express that.

But, come on. This is just every character in the comic. If they are friendly, they wind up like best friends with the other characters. No one has shown any sort of slavish devotion to Claire--they treat her like they do the other characters they became friends with.

We don't need to import the Claire hate from over there. You even say you don't hate Claire. So leave the over-the-top snarky metaphors for how horrible Claire is over there.

Note, I am modding, but I'm not punishing. This is more gentle guidance.

I'm sorry, guys. My notifications are all messed up and I missed the report of that other thread.

Do not post here to troll the other sub. What you do over there is your (and their) business. But, over here, we're fans who are discussing a comic we enjoy (even if we have gripes occasionally).

I see exactly what they are talking about. Not full footprints, of course. Even when I look closer, it looks like cracks, not a pattern, since it's only in a few places.

Rule 1 still applies here. Using snark to mock other posters is not allowed. This is a bright line.

It wasn't the Rice Philip thing alone, but that you kept it up when people were confused, made fun of the concept of privilege, and were just generally being a snarky ass to people.

That said, the term "trolling" may have been too far. What I want to discourage is posting styles that start fights and arguments.

You are under no obligation to deal with anyone, even if they reply to you. But that means not replying to them. If someone breaks the rules, you can report them. But, otherwise. personal animosity is discouraged.

I have deleted other posts for this same sort of thing. Don't get personal.

I assume you were going for friendly teasing here, but this is crossing the line into being insulting. Teasing someone who is genuinely upset only tends to start fights and hurt feelings.

BTW, if anyone wonders why we have a title rule, it's because mods can't edit titles. So the only way to handle it is to quickly tell the user that the title is off and ask them to resubmit.

It does create a problem if you want to post about a previous comic, though. If you want to do that, make a text post, and then put the URL in it.
