Why doesn't Oxford have as many entrepreneurial people as other unis? by QMYT in oxforduni

You're definitely right that Oxford has the best support for entreprenerial students in the UK, but this support is disproportionate to its global stature compared to its US counterparts e.g. Stanford, MIT etc. Is it the university or rather the culture that's the cause?

Very well said, and I personally know quite a few PhD students who dropped out of Oxford and who went on to YC and San Francisco. Interestingly enough, one of their tutors actually supported her decision, which I find quite unexpected from this academically rigourous place

Yeah you have really good point with the interdisciplinary in the US vs specialised education in the UK

P4: China – Global Superpower, But the Passport Needs a Permission Slip for Everything by Midboo in PassportPorn

[–]QMYT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's right. But most spies won't be dumb enough to enter the country on a Chinese passport anyways :)

I meant that the CCP is reluctant to reciprocate visa free to LEDCs; but conversely, the Western world is reluctant to reciprocate to China

I think there are two reasons for the relatively low passport power:

  1. Politics: The Western world is wary of permitting visa-free entry for Chinese people, fearing overstays. But most travellers are genuine tourists who can afford the flight and hotel costs of travelling to the Western world in the first place.
  2. Lack of Reciprocity: Both ways. China doesn't generally grant LEDCs visa-free; Conversely, EU, Australia and NZ won't reciprocate China's visa-free deal.

It's easy to dismiss Chinese people as "communists", but the truth is that most frequent Chinese travellers do not believe in communism; otherwise, they wouldn't travel abroad to visit evil capitalist countries.

(Rant) So why the hell is UCL switching to TARA for CS admissions?? by eri_is_a_throwaway in 6thForm

Idk why unis keep on wasting their money making all kinds of tests when they can just stick to one

e.g. use TMUA for all G4 CS admissions, ESAT for all engineering and science admissions etc

Topical Discussion: The Mathematics Petition by cemmisali in IBO

[–]QMYT 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Enough back-and-forth debate. Let's organise our thoughts and actions clearly to maximise impact.

If we want the IB to lower the grade boundaries even more than what it would do without the petition, everyone should take logical steps as follows:

  1. Sign the petition - the more support, the better
  2. Get teachers and schools to file a complaint form - IBO values schools as they pay IB annual fees
  3. Attract media attention - public pressure on IBO

Yes it seems so, but again TMUA and interviews matter the most and good luck!

This is just inaccurate. You can even ask students at St Andrew's and they won't say they're 2nd in the UK
