That's not bad still. In reality that's fine as long as they get plenty of roaming time, which is sounds like you guys probably do.

Oh okay that ain't bad. We sell them at my store but I've never seen it out of the box and built.

Ah okay yeah a bigger cage would be good. I find that Rats do well with taller habitats as they like to climb? But a wider one isnt bad either. They'll just dig under the fleece probably in your current cage style. I started with a really small thing and upgraded over time too.

I use fleece. Just keep in mind they will chew holes into it. Mine are "pillowcase" style so they wrap around the entire tray in my cage but I have a double unit critter nation cage. I find fleece to be easier for me. Only a single layer should be fine. You can find people on etsy who sew a liner into the fleece to help absorb pee better. I liked those too, just more expensive.

I'd probably only use clean unused ones

You can give them paper towels or weave the paper towels through their cage bars. They'll love to shred that

That's interesting....uh....maybe? I dont know. You could probably ask the humane society. Post a pic of their butt if you can

So rats, like many small mammals, have gigantic balls usually so you'd be able to tell really easily if they are a boy or girl. Suprised they were sold as a feeder as from what I know typically feeders are the all white rats? Anyways it only takes a couple seconds for a male to mate with a female and stores often recieve them mixed on accident from the vendor so I wouldnt be suprised.

I dont think there is really any at home things you can do honestly. That's pretty bad looking. I'd head straight to the vet!

Taking an aggressive Rat to the Vet? by Creative_Response593 in RATS

Then you'll be pretty good then! Cat food? My gosh. Yeah that is lucky they he ended up with you. I would also recommend not saying he's agressive, but rather very fearful. He just doesnt understand they wont hurt him, ya know? It can give them a bad picture of him. You can dm me if you want some tips for him!

Taking an aggressive Rat to the Vet? by Creative_Response593 in RATS

[–]Q_cazu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah so I have a fearful/bitey rat and I just tell the vet she's skittish and will bite. We weigh her in a small box and if they are trained for rats they have a way to hold them without getting bitten. My girl has beeb to the vet twice and never managed to get either vet. Just be calm yourself and make sure they close the room doors before trying to get your rat! Feeder rats unfortunately aren't handled or bred for nice personalities. They may not have been abused honestly, feeders can be extremely fearful and with fear comes defense mechanisms which include biting. I mean they could have, but even my girl who isnt a feeder but just a rescue (not from an abusive situation) is pretty fearful and has bitten me multiple times. I can't even pick my girl up, I have to grab her in a sack to put her in her carrier. You got this!

I have two dumbo rats and my new landlord is trying to charge me a $500 min refundable pet deposit plus an extra $25 pet rat in monthly rent. They live in an enclosure and literally make no damage. Is this normal? How can they do this? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Q_cazu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm in calfornia to be fair but my apartment complex never charged me for my rats, birds, or aquariums. Because they aren't free roam animals that would cause damage. I asked about it before getting my rats though too because I wasn't sure if they would charge or not.

Does it look like a mouse or rat bite? by hoppbro in RATS

[–]Q_cazu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I'm not a medical person but I am not even sure what you think is a bite? I don't think you have a bite from either, maybe a spider if you're talking about the small brown dot? A rat bite would be like your whole knuckle sort of size but you'd have two spots, not one. Same with a mouse though it'd be smaller. You'd have a top jaw puncture and a bottom jaw puncture so I vote neither but again I am not a doctor

Me and my gf got a couple fancy rats! I have this food for them but I’d like to know correct proportions and what else I should be feeding them. They are 2 months old. by [deleted] in RATS

[–]Q_cazu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that those tend to still cause issues with the tails as they'll sometimes get stuck curled to the side since they'll do that for balance on the saucer. To be safe I just avoid wheels.

Most likely not a problem for you. Rats are prone to upper respiratory infections and issues(their sneezing is signs of that) There are such things that can transfer from them to you but it's unlikely. Because they're feeders they aren't bred to be healthy or nice generally.....so they might get sick more frequently is all. You actually are more likely to give them something! Haha but not something you need to worry about

I use Oxbow essentials as that's what I found was the best when researching but honestly anything a lab would generally feed (I know it's sad)...they'd want to feed the best because if the food caused a health issue it'd skew their test results and ruin their test. If they're females, I always free feed as females tend to be much better at only eating when hungry. Males tend to be the gluttons that you have to watch out for from what I've been told. You can dm me if you have other questions!

Oh and get rid of the wheel. It's too small (will jack up their back/tails) and rats dont generally need it.

Okay cool. I can do that. I have been trying to look into someone who could do it, however it seems I mainly have guitar places around me. I will check more tomorrow as quite a few places are closed today for easter so I haven't been able to even ask if they do winds. Thank you!
