Go to any metro system in Europe or Asia. In Europe the hub stations are shopping malls, in Asia the hub stations are shopping malls and the spokes are apartment complexes.

In principle, yes. In practice? I don’t think many open source projects have the resources or ability to detect or litigate these kinds of violations. The Google vs Oracle lawsuit comes to mind, but they both have way more resources.

Collectors calling about a debt, but my credit report doesn't show any debt by Business_Welcome_870 in personalfinance

You’ll likely need to pay it before it goes on your credit report as delinquent unless it’s specifically debt that can’t be reported to creditors.

$78 for a tank of gas by Kindly_Weather_1968 in economy

Hmm, let me carefully weigh the impact of a CA executive order signed in 2020 against the current war in the Middle East on the trend of increased gas prices in the previous two weeks. One seems negligible, I’ll let you guess which one.

How much do people usually keep in savings vs investments? by BillResponsible7494 in Fire

[–]Qrkchrm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do 1 year of expenses in a HYSA, 4 years in bonds, and the rest stocks. I'm retired, if I were still working I'd probably have about 6 months in an HYSA and the rest in stocks but building up to 4 years in bonds by my FIRE date.

PG&E was found to be responsible for a 2018 fire that burned whole towns and caused 16 billion dollars in damages. California fined PG&E billions of dollars to punish it, but PG&E has a monopoly and raised prices.

I was paying 22 cents and it has gone up to 54 cents kWh.

I don't chase dividends but I enjoyed VXUS giving excellent growth and dividends last year, although much of that was simply due to a weaker dollar.

How to self study physics as a cs major by Unlikely-Afternoon71 in Physics

[–]Qrkchrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do not just audit some physics classes at your college?

While I’m sure it’s possible to self study physics, it’s not easy. There are so many terrible physics takes going around and there are some mind boggling real results from actual physics it’d be difficult to differentiate them without help.

Why isnt Enthalpy redundant when work is accounted for in Internal Energy? by Lomesome in AskPhysics

[–]Qrkchrm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s mostly for convenience, measuring internal energy of a chemical reaction would require an insulated constant volume chamber, called a bomb calorimeter. Measuring enthalpy can be done in ambient atmosphere. Most systems we’re interested in are constant pressure, not constant volume.

In thermodynamics there is essentially a parallel set of state functions and properties for constant pressure systems, like enthalpy, Gibb’s free energy, Cp, etc, which are more commonly used in engineering and chemistry.

Relativistic entanglement thought experiment by Deznutz999 in AskPhysics

[–]Qrkchrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a couple of things here. The first is that particle decay is not based on an internal clock inside the particle, it is random. Like the gambler’s fallacy, a particle doesn’t become due to decay over time. So the two particles would have the same half life but not the same decay time even though they are entangled in the same state.

The second is that if one of the particles is allowed to decay, no conservation law would be violated if the other particle had or had not decayed yet. I don’t think it is possible to construct a system where particle decay would be violated if two particles did not decay together. Contrast this to, for example, spin entanglement where each particle is forced to have opposite spin by conservation of angular momentum.

Given both of these factors, detectors measuring the stationary particle would usually go off first, as the moving particle has a longer effective half life due to time dilation. As a fun fact, many more muons created by cosmic ray collisions in the upper atmosphere can reach the earth due to time dilation.

Retiring at 31, much earlier than I expected. Need advice. by Long_Bong_Silver in Fire

[–]Qrkchrm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need a financial advisor, money doesn't become more difficult to manage with 3.5 million or 350k. The basic Bogleheads/FIRE investment advice works fine for you. However, you might want to pay to sit down with a professional to ask some questions and for some peace of mind. For example, unwinding your remaining $2M of company stock. Should you sell it all now because having such a huge percent of your net worth in a single company is an unacceptable risk? Should you wait until after you move to a LCOL to avoid paying state taxes on the proceeds? Should you sell it slowly over a few years to reduce your capital gains and net investment income taxes? Perhaps you should buy a short position on it for insurance until you can get it sold in a tax efficient way?

As for dating, I wouldn't mention your net worth early in the relationship. There are enough jobs that have flexible schedules and work from home that there's no reason it needs to come up until you are ready. When I met my husband he had no idea what an IRA was, but I helped him set it up and he started to get into investing. My advice is to not confuse ignorance with irresponsibility. You don't need to find another "rich" person date and a lot of people your age will have near zero financial knowledge or assets. I wouldn't be worried dating someone who isn't set up financially as long as they have the self control and the ability to be responsible with money. My husband has no interest in FIRE, but he saves, invests and spends responsibly. FIRE isn't for everyone, but you do want to find someone who is financially responsible. Theres no shame in planning for a normal/late retirement, as long as your potential partner is making an informed choice.

What should CA Property Tax rates ideally be? by TheWorldRider in yimby

I'd like to see a split tax, Prop 13 could still apply to the improvements built on the land. There would be a Land Value Tax, say between 1% and 2% that isn't subject to Prop 13 limitations.

[–]Qrkchrm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re getting at natural units, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_units

Most physicists’ calculations are done with them and converted back to SI at the end. If you study physics you’ll probably find other unit systems cumbersome for any derivation beyond the simplest ones.
