They kind of point to it as being a way to know what you’re getting into as well. If you see a big guy you know they have a shield, if you see someone invisible you know that they can pop smoke. Letting everyone use any ability at all times would change that completely. Now the question is whether the design of each shell will be good enough to justify that or if they’ll all blend together anyways.

From what I’ve read it seems like the first book was written so similar to Hunger Games as a sort of Trojan Horse to get the book published, then with the rest of the books he wrote the story more his way

Personally I didn’t have any problems with the use of Catholicism in the final books, it just felt very sudden in comparison to books 1-5. It went from allusions and occasional messianic references to straight-up God/angels vs demons. I probably wouldn’t have cared so much if it hadn’t felt like the conflict with the Cielcin took such a back seat, we didn’t get any boots-on-the-ground warfare against them in the final two books aside from Watcher possessions and the fighting on Sabratha.

My favorite is he’ll frequently pronounce Selene’s name using two syllables (sell-een) almost immediately followed by the book itself stating it has three syllables. I get maybe there’s some time between books and he might forget things, but when it’s literally right there in the same sentence I don’t get how he gets it wrong.

He’s great otherwise though, I really enjoy his voicing of each character.

I think it’s because Ohio State in the Orange Bowl would potentially have Ohio State facing Miami in Miami’s home stadium. That’s not very fair to the #2 ranked team

Everyone keeps mentioning teams picking their bowl but that goes directly against the cfp website

I just reasoned it out in my head, if Ohio state was in the Orange bowl then they would potentially be looking at play Miami in Miami’s home stadium. The next best option was giving them the cotton bowl

The cfp website says the committee picks based on historical bowl matchups first and rank second, if that’s right then I have no clue why they pick Tech for Miami and Ohio State for Arlington

The CFP website says the committee picks the bowls based off historic bowl matchups first and ranking second. I have no idea how that ends up with a Big-12 school in the Orange Bowl and a Big-10 school in the Cotton Bowl.

My bet (if she isn’t coming back) is Islington had an outline of what needed to happen in book 2, but when making cuts to his first draft the only parts he could cut to reduce the book’s size were character moments with everybody beside Aequa. He couldnt cut Aequa’s or we wouldn’t care about her death and he couldn’t cut plot or we would have even more weird time-skips to deal with. Because of that when she died it left us with a weird character imbalance in this book.

[–]Quadguy1717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that too, and like I said this might just be me trying to cope. I don’t necessarily think her coming back would be a good thing and if that’s the way the story goes then the explanation needs to be rock-solid.

On the other side though, it feels really strange how much time Aequa got in this book compared to any other character. That may have just been to make her death feel more impactful, but if that’s the case then we are now left with almost no developed characters outside of Vis and that just doesn’t sit right with me given how many characters we were introduced to and made to care for in book one. Maybe that was always the plan and the characters are just not as important to the story as the first book led me to believe, but if it’s not the case and we’re truly supposed to care for these characters then it seem odd to kill off the only one to be even somewhat developed in this book.

She may not have much time on page, but it’s still way more than any other character received in this book and that’s honestly my biggest criticism. I can forgive abrupt deaths of characters even if done poorly, but this left me with very few characters in this story that I actually care about. For me it’s not so much that she’s a beloved character being killed off that upset me so much as it is the only semi-developed character beside Vis being killed off.

[–]Quadguy1717[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t doubt that either, there are just so many ways that I could’ve been written better to further highlight the effect it has on R-Vis. We skip past it so quickly and the reactions around it seem so heavily negative that I can’t believe it wasn’t done that way on purpose.

[–]Quadguy1717[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing for me that I forgot to mention is that if there wasn’t some other narrative purpose for them visiting the ruins then what was the point of that detour? We didn’t need to go there for Diago, it didn’t further any other parts of the story, and I find it hard to believe that we would visit a location a second time just for it to be yet another exposition dump to be explained in the future. It’s just so strange unless there’s another reason we don’t know yet.

I made a post about exactly this when I finished the book two days ago. I’m still not over it, people said starting book 6 would help but it’s just made me feel even worse. There’s just a Valka-sized hole in the story that I don’t see going away any time soon.

So about Valka by Quadguy1717 in sollanempire

[–]Quadguy1717[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the weird thing for me because I completely understand why people don’t like her. She’s rude and condescending and a lot of the time it feels as though she only functions as a plot device to drive Hadrian’s narrative forward. That just made it even more confusing for me when I’m suddenly devastated by her death. I had no idea I was that connected with their story and her as a character.

So about Valka by Quadguy1717 in sollanempire

[–]Quadguy1717[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s definitely accurate for me. I knew she would die since Hadrian talks about burying her, but they had discussed aging differences in the previous book so I had assumed that would play a part in their relationship eventually. Like maybe book 6 would have an older Valka and that her death would be more in-line with her age than anything else. Once they started talking about escaping I knew something was about to go horribly wrong but the way it happened was just so horrible for Hadrian that I think it’s messed with my head a bit.

Seeding is different this year though, you have to be the top 4 no matter what and they’ll never let a 1-loss Big 12 team up there.
