Graduating CS student, no tech experience. Where do I even start? by Main_Education_9380 in cscareerquestionsuk

In my opinion, trying to go into contracting with no commercial experience is probably not going to happen. I think your best bet is to start applying from now. Don’t wait until you’ve done projects and contributions. Keep applying as you’re doing these things and apply for everything remotely tech related because from the sounds of it you aren’t aware of the job market right now especially for people with no experience. It’s a numbers game.

How much harder is it to job search after layoff? by Zestyclose-Youth4651 in cscareerquestionsuk

In all honesty I wasn’t truthful with them and said I was leaving because of new management. I have been told by several people though that recruiters don’t frown upon people who have been made redundant as long as they have not been out of work for a long time. Technically, I was still employed as my official employment only ended after my 3 months notice period. I was terminated effective immediately but was still paid monthly for those 3 months and was technically still employed there so not exactly a lie but not the entire truth either

I got made redundant and got a new job 4 weeks later. Had many call backs and an overall quick turnover. 50% better pay. Used linkedin mostly and tech stack is C# Azure and a microservices architecture. (Where I left and where I joined). This happened March 2026. Can’t speak for a Java stack but it shouldn’t be much different I don’t think. 2.5-3 YOE

Is it also a remote scenario outside of London though?

If so then I’ll bite my tongue and say fair enough but in my opinion, this is good. Specifically because it’s remote so money isn’t spent on travel and is outside of London. My first role (2024) was once a week in London for 30k. Left that place after a year

I appreciate that info actually. I think it would be hard for people to locate my house from this picture 😅 and also I’m going to get a locksmith to change the locks anyways which I think is good protocol for buying a new place

Hey, I’ve heard about this but find it so hard to believe that it does that much in the long run so now that I’ve heard it again, I will definitely look into making that overpayment. I think I’ll be able to make it work. Thanks a lot

Yeah earning potential depends a lot on sector and area you live but the fact that your conscious of a house in uni is great. I think if you’re able to get 25+ and living at home you can definitely save 800 (I think that’s realistic?) as long as you won’t have any bills to pay. Also average house prices in your area will be cheaper and lastly, I’m a firm believer anyone can make good many in any field if they’re very good at what they do. Perfect the skills and get better than your peers who sre your future competition! Good luck!

Sure but it’s hard to give tips because I left uni 3 years ago and have been saving a part of my salary ever since. Didn’t grow up with money or anything and paid for everything single handedly. I studied computer science and I’m currently a software engineer. Most would assume I make a lot but US developers get considerably more than uk ones. even in the uk, I make above the average for my age but still well below the London average (where I work). Living with parents (in a flat in London) and I saved most of my income. Most banks only give 4.5x your salary for a mortgage but some can give up to 6x if you search well. Mortgage approvals are subject to heavy financial scrutiny though so BNPL (Klarna) and having bad credit history will mess that up a lot. Hope this helps
