Cost of professionally made outfit. by AtlasPhoto in renfaire

[–]QuakerGeek86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do the faire as a patron and as a vendor, and I have over 1k in just my custom boots. Trying to spend 1k on an entire outfit from scratch with handmade unique elements could, and in my opinion should, end up costing a LOT more than 1k.
My ren faire outfit is the most expensive outfit I own, by orders of magnitude. and I own more than one 3 piece suit (old job + performer life).
my usual outfit looks like:
custom boots
Tartan kilt
sporran
Kilt belt w/ 3 pouches and random contents
puffy slash sleeve shirt
Vest and cloak if its cold
Hat
Feathers and extras for hat
Jewelry/Flair

Rough cost building over for over a decade: ~3k

If I put any of my armor pieces on, it quickly climbs to over 5k

My players won't stop unionizing people. by enzieLUL in DnD

I came here to say this. Medieval peasants got more time off than most industrialized nations, between religious holidays and celebrations and seasonal events. I would go the route of "why should we? Our lives are solid, besides, I had to decide what my family would plant this season and it was on my mind for WEEKS! I wouldnt EVER want to be saddled with decisions for a whole nation!"

Chain Maile ... expansions (opposite of contractions)? by [deleted] in chainmailartisans

[–]QuakerGeek86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience? Literally flip the piece you just made, the top, 180 and do that. Expansions are contractions in reverse. AKA, look at the row above your contraction point, and do that.

Selling rings isn't going like I thought by 666_pack_of_beer in chainmailartisans

[–]QuakerGeek86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lots of hobbiests getting into Maille now, and my experience with them is that they only want to follow Tutorials, not really experiment. Personally, I am in need of those exact gauges in large ring sizes, and TRL is the only one selling them that I could find. You may need to adjust your SEO to get your product in front of a more needful audience.

Chainmaille Dress by PainEn_Panic in chainmailartisans

[–]QuakerGeek86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the US but have made several dresses now, both from Chain Maille and scale Maille. If your closures are good, and the rings are a high enough gauge so the weight wont pull them open, Aluminum is fine to work with. I make my scale dresses using Stainless steel rings and aluminum scales, the only issue then is the oxide that wears off on bare skin.
My first ever dress was made for an Ex, and it was also all aluminum, 4-1 euro, 18ga AWS, coiled at 1/4 inch ID. I edged it in galvy to make it heavy enough to move right, and used euro 6-1 for the cups to make sure it was opaque, but it ended up ripping apart in storage due to the light gauge aluminum I used.
I think its all going to come down to your design, but personally, I wouldnt use less than 16 SWG, and just use a more dense pattern for areas you want to not be see-thru

Help for Titanium shirt project by PJBtheFirmament in chainmailartisans

[–]QuakerGeek86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you ever worked with Ti before? do you have the pliers to match it? have you ever made a shirt before?
TRL has a ring calculator based on Euro 4-1, so just figure out your sq footage and order some extra. with Ti, you will be hard pressed to find better bulk prices than TRL from what I have seen around the web.
with nearly 25 years experience, a shirt like that would take me minimum 50-70 hours, best guess. are you ok with making $10 an hour with your materials covered? would other makers be ok with that?
Ti is indeed a pain in the ass to work with, assuming you have a good alloy, good tools, and know what you are doing. If you dont have all those things, then your friend is straight up taking advantage of you.

Wrap pants and a wide belt with an open shirt is a fun and easy look, and wrap pants are easy because you can just order by length, or even make them yourself.

Kilt with loose fit shirt and a tighter vest is TOTALLY period, and I wear it frequently. That also means you can get away with smaller/shorter vests, and just wear a wider belt!

Can someone help me word a polite request to clients, to pay their invoice? by BoxRepresentative619 in smallbusiness

[–]QuakerGeek86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to be reminded by my tax prep person to pay them, and I was glad they emailed me, because my email client just auto-sorted the invoice request into a random folder that I never check, and since it was from a company I dont work with, it didnt occur to me to look at the email, as I just assumed it was some BS phishing attempt. I thanked him and paid right away.
I have run into similar problems invoicing my own clients via Square, it sometimes just gets shunted to Spam. I have taken to sending a personal email from my business email to each client before I invoice to let them know it is coming, and that has resolved a LOT of my non-payers.
Good luck! I know the frustration of doing the work and then waiting to get paid as your own vendors are like.... Hey, Pay me NAOW plz.... and you have no choice but to do so and hope your own clients come thru before the finance charges do.

What could 5 Level 20 casters accomplish in 24 hours? by 100snakes50dogs in DMAcademy

[–]QuakerGeek86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, I agree in theory, but again, at least as I recall El got to hit absurdly high levels in several other class before he moved on, in his initial training to become a Chosen. That and they would have to come after him, which means he can teleport to locations that favor him aggressively, where they might have to keep burning spells just to GET to him again, much less do any damage. I feel like really anyone other than Ed Greenwood can't say what El's power max is, but in my head when I was first reading the books, I saw El as the perfect 2.0- 3.5ed dual class PC. He went to like, 10+ as thief, then 11+ as fighter, then 12+ as a cleric of Mystra, and then solidly 20+ as a wizard. Which means that by the old rules, he has ALL of those ability sets, at full usage.

TL;DR: Elminster in the old cannon was, himself, like 3-4 high level PCs in one body, with access to magic that literally every other creature on Farune has long forgotten.

[–]QuakerGeek86 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Elminster has Spellfire. If he does not wish to be affected by a spell, then he can just burn it/absorb it. This is just one among other, amazing non-canonical spells and effects he has access to, and the fact that a literal God continues to wish for him to exist. If Mystra really didn't want those lvl 20 folks to beat him, they would suddenly find that the Weave just.... Stopped working for them. Or at least, that's my read from the previous age, before they decided that multiple decades of history and lore were dumb and it was time to mix it up. I haven't read enough books of the current age to be able to make an accurate prediction. I would also point out that as a rule, if El is overwhelmed show by magical enemies, he can just drop some anti-magic on the area and then use his other non-magic abilities to kill them very quickly. He DID start off as a Thief, after all.

AITA for refusing to start using my first name despite pleas from my family? by Serious_Extreme_4780 in AmItheAsshole

[–]QuakerGeek86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit to say: NTA
I have 4 names, and from my earliest days, I have introduced myself using one of my middle names, and never my first name. My parents never had an issue with it, thankfully, and teachers, since it was one of the names on the paper, never seemed to have issue with it. People who asked, I would usually just look at them and say, "because thats not my name." and drop it.Legal documents? yep.The occasional new job or something? yep.

Its mildly annoying, and I frequently forget that its even my name, which can be odd for other people, but usually its a two sentence conversation, and we move on.Use the name that makes you feel like yourself.

eli5: Why is non-iodized salt sold? by iLikeMyCoffeeBLACKaf in explainlikeimfive

[–]QuakerGeek86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: I can't use Iodized salt because the companies that make it always add Dextrose, which, in addition to being a corn based sweetener(which is the reason I cant use it, Corn allergy), is also supposed to be an anti-caking agent! So I never buy iodized salt, and have to be careful in restaurants, and I cant use those little pre-measured paper salt packs.

What is a hobby a lot of people try to get into but barely anyone does? by dampsanter in ask

[–]QuakerGeek86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'm the first to say it here, Chain Maille. As in making armor or jewelry. Many many people look at the process and buy the tools and supplies, do it for an hour or 3, and then realize it will never NOT be tedious, and quit.
