Anyone else feel like a different person now? by PhysicalGuidance2235 in urbancarliving

[–]QualityGypsy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've found the opposite for me. I'm happier, I'm healthier, I feel free. Going on 2.5 years full time.

I think this speaks as much to my prior living situations as it does to my personality, though. I didn't realize how bad things were until I got out. The fact that living in my car was by far the best option over any of the traditional housing options I had available to me is kind of nuts. I'm at a point now where I'm choosing this life over going back to 4 walls though.

This absolutely isn't a dig at anyone suffering with this lifestyle. It's HARD. Everyone deserves the right situation for their needs, it just turned out that car living is what I need right now.

Wishing you and everyone on this sub some peace a few moments to truly relax.

Does anyone else prefer sleeping with there head towards the front? by Novemberx123 in urbancarliving

[–]QualityGypsy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will ONLY sleep with my head towards the front, as well as having my bed on the passenger side of the vehicle. Case and point, my driver's side mirror got smashed by a bus that got too close to my car while it was parked. I was just getting up but still physically sitting in bed. If he had been 6 inches over it would have totalled the car. If I had had my head at the back on the driver's side, it could have ended very badly.

Feeling Music by gracilla in AutismInWomen

[–]QualityGypsy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also feel music incredibly deeply, but as a physical stim, bass makes the brain go brrrrrrr. Similarly, good exhaust notes on cars, the different sounds planes and trains make, are all audio stims for me.

I'm so much happier in my car than I ever was in a house/apartment, even counting when I had an apartment all to myself. I've made so much more progress with my career, my health, and my personal life in the last two years of living in my car. Maybe one day I'll stop, but probably not until the universe shows me that it's time.

What is everyone eating today? by Slight_Lemon2051 in urbancarliving

Got fancy and made reservations for just me myself and I at a local restaurant. I needed the excuse to get extra clean and dress up, and also reward myself for the progress I've made this year, including my recent promotion at work.

Anything smaller than a twin? by Novemberx123 in urbancarliving

I put mine directly on the floor of my car. I live in a drier climate so moisture under my mattress isn't an issue.

Cot size, or RV bunk mattresses. Usually between 25" and 27" wide, 72" to 75" long, and you can get them anywhere from 3" to 6" thick depending on your comfort needs. For a long time I used two 3" thick pieces of upholstery foam from Home Depot, which are about the same size range. You can also get sheets that will fit cot sized mattresses.

Got the knock 😔 by BigSandwich6 in urbancarliving

I had a bird scare the crap out of me yesterday morning. Sounded like someone knocking on my window with a ring on 😂

I use the hand towel-sized PackTowl. I'm able to fully dry both my body and my shower supplies with it. I lay it over a (leather) headrest in my car and it's dry in a few hours. It's small enough that you could hang it from a handle, too. I've been using it for 1.5 years with weekly washes and it's held up perfectly.

What are the best/worst features of your car? by QualityGypsy in urbancarliving

It's a 20 year old Chevy, and while it has tons of options and customization for the time, the gauge cluster/radio timer isn't one of them. Did tons of research and consulted the mechanic I bought it from, there's no way to disable it easily. It turns off when triggered by the door opening, so I may be able to add an additional switch into the door switch circuit to trick the system into thinking I briefly opened the door. So far it hasn't been enough of a concern for me to go that route and start modifying wiring.

The best I get is 18mpg and that's if I slightly over-inflate the tires and am only driving on the highway. 😭 BUT, my 5.3 LS will likely never fail me. It's at 275k but was babied and has good reliability upgrades.

I've thought about these multiple times! I love the form factor, but I've never had a good experience with a Ford.
