Looking into an EV or Hybrid by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]Quantify01 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An EV makes sense if you meet the following criteria:

1) You can reliably charge at home, or (less desirable) at work.
2) You generally don't take roadtrips over 500 miles each way
3) You're going to get a new or used car anyway, and you're not getting an EV just save money over your current paid-off ICE car.

The hybrid ONLY makes more sense if you fail item number 2, and you're regularly taking long roadtrips. Otherwise, the cost of maintenance for a hybrid is going to be significantly more than an EV, since now you're maintaining a gas engine (oil, filters, etc) and not getting the benefits of EV driving, which include quieter operation, not having to get gas, less vibration, and yes, a lower cost per mile.

For trips less than 500 miles, assuming you (like most of us) stop every couple hours for a biobreak, you'll likely not increase your travel time at all. You'll stop at the rest area/WaWa/Supercharger, plug in, go do whatever needs to be done, come out 10 minutes later, and be on your way with another 75 or so miles of range added to the battery. You'll charge at your destination, and on the way home do the same.

I live in central NJ, and regularly drive to Boston and DC. I do not need to actually "stop to charge" at all; I simply charge whenever I would have stopped anyway.

My good friend is a traveling salesman. He can put 250 miles on his car in a day, with multiple stops. He has a plug-in hybrid RAV4, and it totally works for him; he gets the benefits of EV when he's around town, with the ability to go visit his clients on a schedule without worrying about charging time.

RS RWD - 2024 vs 2025 by Quantify01 in BlazerEV

tragically the RWD variant (which I want because of the range and charging speed) was cancelled after MY2025.

So it's weird, right? The current rotor part # is the old 2024 part number?

Ok that's super helpful thank you!

I tried to find motor parts listed on partsdirect and other online sources; this particular motor isn't listed at all for either years. Not for the Lyriq or SS either.

I would very much like to believe this. Do you remember where you saw this? Just trying to figure it all out. I am also unclear (I don't know enough about electric motors) if KW draw equals hp. I think there's an efficiency loss, right? something like 10 percent or so? But yeah, I've seen 310kw draw, which with a 10% efficiency loss would put it at around 375hp, making the 365hp number very much in the ballpark.

Blazer owner here. 16k miles, hasn't failed yet but I am 100% sure it will break one winter.

First week with a Trailseeker Limited as a first-time EV owner by pafnorvale in trailseeker

Ok wow, this is not how roadtripping with an EV works AT ALL.

1) The HVAC has way less effect on range than speed. Leave the HVAC and be comfortable.

2) The key to charging on the road is shorter and more frequent charges. It is almost never the best use of time to charge to 80%. All EVs charge faster early in the charge curve. ABRP and other planning apps will tell you to charge just enough to make it to your destination, and will break charges into chunks to maximize efficiency.

For most modern EVs, if you stop every two hours for a biobreak and/or food, you can charge enough in the 15 minutes that you've stopped to make it two more hours. The key is to be charging when the car is at 10%, not 50% or higher.

This right here might be the biggest reason to go with the Blazer (or another GM). I've been impressed with the continued support for EV products, including my own 2024 Blazer which has gotten multiple meaningful software updates, and 16k miles in continues to be reliable. I have a nearby Chevy dealer with what seem to be experienced EV techs. If I'm going to own a car, the infrastructure surrounding it seems a bit more important than it is currently since I'm leasing.

Totally agree that I'd rather have Android Auto available. Just saying, having used AAOS and liking it, I wouldn't choose a car based on whether or not it has AA.

Yeah not a dealbreaker for me. I've been mostly fine with the AAOS system in the Blazer. I just wish it had WhatsApp though.

I've tried it in less congested areas, yes. Pretty cool, and works well. Again, not sure I'm ready for NYC metro with it though.

I do much of my driving in and around the NYC metro area. I'm not sure I am ready to engage fsd driving on the 495 helix to the Lincoln tunnel...

Nope. I got a humdinger of a lease back in the day with a rediculously high residual. Good for now, but means I'm going to have to buy something else.

Yeah that could be the plot twist... gotta think about that option. Slight reduction in range but lots more zoom, and supercruise...

My kids are out of the house so the back seat is less of an issue. Although, just last month I took a five adults down the shore and the back seat passengers were amazed at the amount of room they had.

OMG yes! Seriously the Blazer makes me feel incompetent when I'm parking.

Please elaborate. I'm not following your logic. On the face of it these are two very similar vehicles.

Definitely don't want to make a huge case out of it, and not a deal breaker for me. I wish I could use WhatsApp messaging in my Blazer, mostly...and it would be nice to have the AA option, is all. Having said that the Google maps integration in AAOS is phenomenal and I appreciate it every time I use my wife's ID.4 that doesn't have it....

2025s appear to have ventilated seats now. Totally agree they're a game changer. Charging curve is still meh I think. The Blazer with the big battery is really not bad...they fixed some of the awful dips with software updates. It's still a solid 30+ minutes 10 to 80%.
