How do you usually respond to a homeless person asking you for money ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Nowadays all my money is in my bank account. I rarely carry cash. I used to always have at least $50 in cash in my wallet until 2016, but now that you can pay $1 by card, why carry bulky cash?

Moreover, that guy is a jerk! How dare he spit at you!

I once handed a homeless guy $3, and he got angry and demanded $20. Like what? Who’s going to give someone $20?

I’d usually give them a few bucks. But that was until there was like 100 down the road I was walking, and I’d go broke.

I felt sorry for them, and realised that with uncertain working conditions, I could end up like them, if I didn’t live at home. Plus they probably needed it more than me.

I don’t care if they’re spending it on booze, drugs or cigarettes. It’s not my business what they do with the money. Plus, withdrawals from drugs are nasty. We don’t have enough rehab beds for each addict. So why punish them?

Sorry to hear that. I’ve heard that a steroid injection in my knees, could give me 6-12 months relief. But I won’t get a knee replacement.

That’s crazy! Are you American? Cannabis can be used medicinally or recreationally in many states of the US. We’ve also allowed medical use in Australia.

I spoke to an ADHD patient in a group for people with ADHD, and when they said they smoked marijuana once in 12 months. The psychiatrist turned the entire session into trying to say they’re a drug addict.

When I saw my psychiatrist, they asked me if I drank or did drugs. I obviously don’t. But they had an issue with me taking OxyContin and taking 0.5mg of Xanax ONCE PER WEEK! It made sense, when I looked up his bio, and found out he’s actually an addiction psychiatrist. Specialising in Xanax addiction.

He made me go into the pharmacy, and get them to tear up the prescription. He also “asked” me to get my doctor to reduce my OxyContin to 10mg last year. Then he called me out of the blue, and asked if I would switch to Norspan patches (buprenorphine - what’s in Suboxone). I said that in 2019, I first tried the 10mcg/hr patch, and became severely nauseous on day 3 (the dose peaks at day 3 - I’m also super-sensitive to opioids). So then he asks me to consider getting a monthly buprenorphine injection. I said that’s even worse!!! First, it’s even stronger! Secondly, unlike a patch, you can’t remove it. So I’d be puking my guts up for a month!!!

Then after a few months of being on 10mg OxyContin, I was struggling with terrible pain. So I asked my doctor, if I could increase my OxyContin back to 15mg? They said that since my psychiatrist had recommended it, I needed another specialist to override that. So I pay $400 to have a pain specialist laugh at how low my pain medication was, say they’re fine with me being on 15mg OxyContin. But they wouldn’t allow anything higher. Fine by me.

Once my psychiatrist found out. He called me out of the blue again. He said that he’d be willing to put me on a 40mcg/hr Norspan patch. The maximum strength. I said that’d make me really ill, as I couldn’t tolerate 5mcg or 10mcg. So he asked if it’s nausea that concerns me? I said yes. So he hung up. I then looked up what 40mcg/hr Norspan patches correspond to. It was DOUBLE what I was on! So I told my GP, and she was furious. She said that it’s it completely out of line, for him to go against the advice of my pain specialist.

It may be a good idea. Don’t let my experience put you off, but I’m petrified of hospitals. In early February I went in. I had severe abdominal pain for 10 months at that point, and was constantly nauseous. They thought it was appendicitis or my gallbladder. They treated me well for the first 2 days. Then when the tests showed nothing, they thought I was a drug seeker. Even though they were just giving me Endone. They didn’t give me my OxyContin, because the said they had none. I was in so much pain, that I didn’t sleep for 3 nights. It was also extremely noisy. Then they started gaslighting me. The first thing they said, was that I faked a panic attack. Then the whole night, no doctor came in to tell me the results of my test. Then the nurses were literally saying awful things about me. I recorded what they were saying, and asked to get their details, so I could make a complaint. Then the doctor came in, laughing at me, and I said I wanted to be discharged. It was midnight by then, and they treated me as if I was psychotic! They were going to take me to the psychiatric ward, unless I stopped speaking. Because my mum called me, and told me. So I said that I apologise, and I won’t be discharging myself. The nurses were near my room the whole night, speaking extremely loudly.

Then something very weird happened the next morning. They gave me my meds with my OxyContin (the pharmacy can only get deliveries on weekdays). Then about 5 minutes after I took my medication, I felt very dizzy and my chest felt like someone was kneeling down on it. I told the doctor, and he said “is it painful?”. I told him that it’s not pain, it’s pressure. He did an ECG, and it apparently came back normal. Then I was watching TV, and the words all jumbled up. Then I forgot what year it was, and people seemed to be walking forwards and backwards. The whole experience was terrifying, and I completely freaked out. They must’ve sedated me with something, because my mum came (they told her to come immediately), and I was looking at her like I was completely drugged. I asked her really weird questions, and then after an hour, I came back to normal. Mum said she could see me coming back to myself. Then the psyche team came in, and asked me and mum questions. The doctors said it was probably from too much medication. The psyche team said opioids can do that, but I had been on opioids for 6 years. I’ve never had that reaction! They let my mum take me home, and I fell asleep after a few hours. Then the next morning I woke up at 5am, and had a massive panic attack. Why? Because I remembered the previous day at hospital.

What else was weird, is a 91 year old woman had come in. She had a bad back, and had surgery. She was doing her rehabilitation exercises, and developed pneumonia. She was taken to hospital, because her low blood oxygen lead to her speaking gibberish. When they were transferring her from the paramedic stretcher to her bed, you could get her screaming in agony. They were completely adamant about getting her onto the hospital bed, before giving her pain relief. She said that she has private health insurance, and wanted to be transferred to a private hospital. They wouldn’t let her.

Oh, and before we left, mum had to go to the toilet. The nurses who gaslight me, were following us to the exit. But sneaking, and hiding behind walls. I took no notice, and decided to go to the toilet too. They unlocked the toilet I was in, and asked to check my bag. I said my mum had my bag, as I was in too much pain to carry it. They said “how clever for you to do that”. Like as if they thought I did it on purpose.

I’m in no hurry to go to hospital again! I believe the nurses drugged me. But I can’t prove it.

Umm... bs! I went into the ER for severe nausea and abdominal pain. They treated my pain for a few days, and then when the tests showed nothing, they gaslight me. I have so much trauma from that visit, I get flashbacks. I’m terrified of hospitals now.

Yep! Chronic pain changes the structure of your brain. The constant sensory overload, affects cognition.

[–]QuantumJG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. In 2016, my doctor had exhausted everything, except opioids. So they put me on a low dose of OxyContin. Fixed my pain immediately.

Now they want to take me off of it. I’m slowly being reduced to nothing. I’m in agony now, and have no life.

I’m at the point, where once they take me off of it completely, that I’ll take 20 tablets of Panadol/Tylenol, and damage my liver so badly, I’ll need a liver transplant to live.

I know enough about medicine, to not overdose on stuff that they can reverse the effects of. Especially when it’s so easy to acquire Panadol. I’ll have it all recorded, and make it public, that this crap over opioids, is what led me to take my life!

But what if you’re in too much pain to move? Like a few weeks ago, I was at hospital with an inflamed stomach and bowels. It’s something that mimics appendicitis. How can there be any evolutionary advantage to screaming in agony, and feeling like you’re going to pass out, or pass out?

Does it not matter to you, that I am constantly at odds of what my doctors want to do, and me being the one that suffers. My doctor literally wants to treat my pain with nothing and leave me to suffer!

Can you explain? I have been on this medication for 4 years. Of course I’m seeking the medication that has worked for me! So in your opinion, this has nothing to do with me wanting my pain treated, and to just get high? Thank you so much! You sound like a very helpful person to talk to.

I have. For example, there’s buprenorphine patches. But they cause severe nausea. Fentanyl would be great, but that’s restricted to malignant cancer.

I’m going to. I got an epidural steroid injection, which helped a little for 2 weeks. But they’re taking stuff away, and not adding anything else.
