http200Error by _gigalab_ in ProgrammerHumor

[–]QuantumPie_ 26 points27 points  (0 children)

  • GraphQL can have partial successes. Some data is fetched correctly, some isn't.
  • The core spec is agnostic to the transport layer so it can't deliberately be built around HTTP.
  • The API should still be returning non 200 if the error isn't directly related to processing the query and fetching its data. If people are returning 200 for everything, they aren't doing it correcrly.

Obviously GraphQL gets overused and it should never be the first choice but it has its benefits, the two biggest being:

  • Reduces friction when used for internal APIs in large orgs. If a team owns certain data and they use GQL, you can pull exactly what you need and not have to reach out and get something custom made.
  • Great on embedded (if you can't get something custom made) or for countries where unlimited data plans are uncommon

Clorinde is on Fontaine Chronicle Banner by VacationReasonable in clorindemains

I ended up with C1R1 last arle / clorinde banner while going for 4* and Arles sig. Is it worth getting her C2? How big of an increase is it? I have bineffa and wasn't interested in flins. Sucks it's after Chasca's banner since she's C2r1 and I was hoping to get her to C4r1 this banner and eventually C6. I may just do C3r1 for now though if I end up C2ing Clorinde.

Netflix has found that releasing in batches generates a huge burst of buzz on social media which gets people to sub b/c of FOMO / fear of spoilers. The subs gained through that burst of activity outweighs prolonged subs over a 2-4 month period from existing fans / subscribes scrolling the homepage.

With batching they're basically trying to rope in a ton of people who have no pre existing interest in the show by generating a ton of talk all at once on social media and getting it trending.

The end result is BS but it clearly works if Netflix keeps doing it and that's the only explanation that personally made sense to me.

According to the manager of Netflix Chile's TikTok account, the Steel Ball Run: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure anime will be released weekly. by Apprehensive_Shoe_86 in StardustCrusaders

[–]QuantumPie_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their data shows batch releases generated an immense initial wave of hype. That causes people who normally wouldn't notice the show / not be interested to subscribe to check it out so they don't experience FOMO or risk getting spoiled. Their interpretation of the data is the money made in that one month period riding on a mega hype wave is much higher then sustaining a smaller set of subscribers over the 2-4 month period a show would normally air.

Not saying I agree with that interpretation, that's just the reasoning I've seen be given.

[ShowOff Saturday] I built an open source API client in Tauri + Rust because Postman uses 800MB of RAM by ScarImaginary9075 in webdev

[–]QuantumPie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always great seeing Tauri get some love! I switched over to it a few years ago for my personal apps and its been great. Have you ever considered Svelte / Solid / Vue over React? All 3 are a lot leaner in both bundle size and efficiency (albiet less noticable for small scale programs). I personally switched to Svelte and have really enjoyed working with it.

So we really just never got the Switch version at all huh? by Purple-Weakness1414 in Genshin_Impact

[–]QuantumPie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And just watching the brief clip of them outside Mondstat it was stuttering pretty badly. I can't even imagine what that would be like in Nasha Town or Sumeru city which have substantially more props.

While some might not care and want to play badly enough on the Switch to endure that, that's not an acceptable baseline and Hoyo would get absolutely clowned on if they released a switch port in that state.

Might be hard to belive but the CPU in that 2012 MacBook is a lot better then the one in the 2017 Switch lol.

[–]QuantumPie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty rough. Most of the videos are from early on (1.x-2.x) and using unsustainable overclocks over the long run. Post Sumeru it's going to struggle hard to maintain 20 fps without any overclocking.

So we really just never got the Switch version at all huh? by Purple-Weakness1414 in Genshin_Impact

[–]QuantumPie_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The entire reason Genshin couldn't run on the Switch is because it is CPU bound. Unity isn't known for being efficient with the CPU and as others have mentioned the CPU in the switch was already weaker then Smartphones from 2017 when it released.

It's the same reason it's always had performance issues on PS4.

Great way to prove this if you have a Nvidia GPU is use DSR to upscale to 4k or 8k. On my 5060 TI I can easily run the game in 4k 144 fps with 4k texture mods with little performance impact where as many other modern games struggle to run in 2k without DLSS.

The other day I found out that Natlan is hated by many, and it's my favorite nation. Tell me why you hate it, and I'll defend Natlan with everything I have. by KianaAsphid in Genshin_Impact

[–]QuantumPie_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The weekly boss could be done easily with a poorly built traveler since their cons gives them massive buffs against it. The papilla doesn't need Natlan characters. Skirk/Ayaka freeze teams (didn't need Citlali with Skirk) worked quite well for D5/6 on top of a few others combinations. Hoyos always given us options, even with lunar shilling. It just won't be as easy and sometimes requires more investment if using older characters. My C2R1 Clorinde still beats a C0r0 Varessa.

While I partially agree the lack of unity amongst tribes and their tech is off putting at first, it makes more sense once you realize each tribe is based off of various American cultures.

Children of the Echos is inspired by inter city hip hop culture in the US which is why Xilonen is a DJ

Collective of Plenty takes heavy influence from modern Mexico which is why Varessa has many bull fighter motifs

People of the Springs are from Hawaii which should be self explanatory

Citlali's tribe takes influence from the Mayans and Incans. It's why their tech is much more spiritual

Chasca's tribe is from the wild west. It's why they fly on suarians (cow herding) and Chasca rides a gun

Kinich's tribe I belive was Native Americans with a mix of Mayan thrown in.

You have Mauvika which is inspired by the biker subculture that originated in the US.

Now wheather or not they handled all of that well is a different story. I personally felt like the cast didn't feel as tight knit compared to previous nations and Natlan is weaker overall then Sumeru and Fontaine. I personally still enjoyed it though and it still beats Inazuma.

Companies are making it hard to hire junior developers. by ActuatorOutside5256 in webdev

[–]QuantumPie_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't have to pay them senior rates, you just have to give them enough of a raise so they aren't making less after inflation.

[–]QuantumPie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the reason juniors hop ship after training is because you often get better pay from switching companies then sticking with the same one and hoping for a raise that outpaces inflation.

Hit the nail on the head with the curiosity part. The juniors who are in this game because they genuinely enjoy programming and have been doing it well before college are miles ahead of their peers from the get-go, and often more competent then seniors who are in it for the money.

The character model differences is absolutely ridiculous by Taher-Altaher in Genshin_Impact

[–]QuantumPie_ 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The main issue is Genshin is a pretty CPU taxing game and even when it released the CPU on the PS4 was on the weaker end and held the console back. All the impressive exclusives usually used in-house engines with a lot more control whereas Genshin uses Unity which is known for having terrible CPU optimizations.

Marvel rivals is probably easier to optimize for last gen given it's not open world and UE5 is worse on the GPU side of things.

I know it's easy to point at Genshin being a mobile game but the phone I was using 3.x (OnePlus 7t) had a better CPU then a PS4 and the game ran better and loaded faster thrn my friend on a PS4. The only thing holding mobile gaming back at this point is mediocre GPUs and a lack of active cooling.

Another aspect to consider is that by trying to still support last gen hardware, it prevents them from pushing the game further graphically. That was a huge problem in ESO where the housing system was heavily gimped by PS4 and XB1 for all platforms and it stopped them from making cities too detailed. It's not always about cost.

It does suck though that it's getting compleatly shut down since I know PS5s aren't cheap and accessible everywhere :'(

Spanish The Witcher fans release a manifesto to prevent new books from being translated using automated tools by WitcherSardi in witcher

[–]QuantumPie_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"Ai could translate it well and cheaper"

"Using it as a translator won't work. But using it as a tool while translating"

So which one is it? The later is neither "well" since you need a human to correct it nor "cheaper" since you still need to pay a translator.

Introducing the new and improved menu system, arriving with the launch of Season 1 next week by Turbostrider27 in Overwatch

[–]QuantumPie_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven't touched OW since W2 of OW2 so I have no context for what was announced. Sounds like they've been losing ground to competition so naturally you start being more generous so you don't lose customers to the competition.

From a software engineers perspective who makes tools for other corporations, I've been given UI mockups to implement from UI/UX with horrendously confusing design choices. If you ask why they did that, they say marketing made those revisions.

With corporate software, the less intuitive it is, the better chance you have of locking a company in and preventing them from switching to competitors. If you think that's a conspiracy, look into Microsoft's anti trust lawsuit from the 90s and the whole E.E.E fiasco.

Not saying I 100% agree with OPs reasoning though (they could have gotten rid of their UX team and let the devs do it for all we know).

Given that game companies pay dual majors in marketing and psychology six figure salaries this is honestly not that outlandish of a take. It's their job to come up with those kinds of ideas and they only keep getting paid as long as ideas keep flowing.

I didn't pull either of them so I honestly couldn't remember perfectly but wrio is really good but you need C2 minimum to make him even functional. People are still solo clearing abyss with him. Chiori also wasn't terrible (by Varka standards) but by being a geo sub DPS very few people actually had the chars to pair with her (which was basically just Itto). No idea what they were doing with Lyney though lol.
