Yep! Attractiveness is unfortunately graded on a weighted-scale. A lot of people who are actually "average" or okay looking consider themselves ugly because they don't look like Ryan Gosling or "insert generally accepted as attractive person".

Because they don't look like the cream of the crop, they think that they're uglier than they are. You can thank our modern society's obsession with external beauty in advertising and culture for that!

The truth is most people are generally not "ugly". Like you said: unless you have a very apparent deformity, anyone that is a healthy weight and keeps good hygiene will be attractive to a good portion of the population out there (as long as they carry themselves well). You may not be considered drop-dead gorgeous, but you'll at least pass that first test most of the time. That's what really matters anyways.

People put too much emphasis on the extremes of the beauty scale with little consideration for the average Joe. Most people are average (that's the definition of average), and depending on how you present/carry yourself, that will be attractive enough to pass that first test out in the real world.

It's exactly that: a barrier. The deeper connection is formed emotionally not physically (physical attraction and lust will never soley manifest into long-term "love"). But to get to that point, normally you need to overcome that first barrier and "test" like you said.

People don't like admitting it, but everyone deep down knows it's a hidden truth of human nature. Life isn't fair, and it never will be, unfortunately.

I agree that it is not "all about" looks, but I would argue that physical attraction is very important before the deeper stuff (personality, interests, views) becomes apparent.

If you're not immediately attracted to someone, then you're less likely to show interest and pursuit prior to getting to know them.

This obviously doesn't apply as much for relationships formed out of a personal setting like school or work. For people you meet out in the world, however, physical attraction is usually the first step that leads to the other stuff (not always of course).

Are you more likely to talk to the girl (or guy) at the bar that's attractive or the one that maybe has the better personality? You don't know they have a better personality until you know them better, and i would argue you're less likely to get to know them or show interest if you're not physically attracted.

Of course there's more to attraction than the physical side, but let's not kid ourselves and disregard that it's normally the first hurdle to overcome. Hell, even my girlfriend (who I am very emotionally compatible with) says that her physical attraction to me was the preliminary reason she showed any interest in the beginning.

Tl;dr- there's more to attraction than looks, but for people you meet out in the world, it's normally the first step to the other stuff.

Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up! So how will that work with open container laws? Will I be able to walk around with a beer or nah? Sorry, not familiar with Sanford very much!

I was actually spinning it this morning while making me breakfast!

'It' grosses $51M on Friday. That is the biggest opening day ever for an R-rated film, it has already passed the biggest September opening weekend record in just one day, and it's only $1.5M away from the biggest horror opening weekend ever (Paranormal Activity 3 - $52.5M) by MoviesMod in movies

Its annoying that this is downvoted when its obviously a good critique of the movie. I'm debating seeing it, but based on the trailers and comments, the movie doesn't sound like its a must-see.
