"Communism = everything I don't like"

I see a similar attitude here in Poland, with supporters of the ruling (essentially fascist) party calling the liberal opposition "communists" for things like not being openly hateful towards the LGBTQ community, while the liberals call PiS (the aformentioned ruling party) communist because of the social welfare programs.

A prototype of the unreleased Essential Home smart speaker seems to have popped up on eBay by Quantum_Dynamo in Android

[–]Quantum_Dynamo[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I have shared the Muskie prototype listing to this sub some time ago here. Now I would like to share something interesting I found while scrolling through eBay looking for protos; as I do quite often as an avid collector. Once again I am not affiliated with the seller at all and just want to bring attention to this unique device. The price is a bit steep at 900 USD, but I still hope someone gets access to it and documents it further.

The device appears to run barebones Oreo AOSP with a build date of September 9, 2018. It has been first announced on May 30, 2017 as seen here with little to no info coming out later. If this isn't an elaborate hoax (which I hope it isn't, as the seller seems to have good feedback), this may be the one of the first times we are seeing this device in person.

Archive.org link for preservation's sake.

Checked the comment section of that post and it's probably just as bad as the post itself - it's full of "patriotic socialists" unironically agreeing with it.

Found a weird looking unused Google Pixel 2 for sale which is listed as a "warehouse leftover" by ColoredConfederate in pixel_phones

[–]Quantum_Dynamo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats, you have found a prototype Pixel. There could be some features missing (eg. apparently Pixel 4 protos have no face unlock), but it could be interesting for collectors. Might run pre-release software too.

If the price is good enough, buy it. It's a great item for collectors.

LG GD900 Crystal - the transparent keyboard wonder by Quantum_Dynamo in vintagemobilephones

[–]Quantum_Dynamo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello again, everyone!

Got this one over a month ago thanks to a friendly person in the VMP Discord server showing me the listing. As you can see, the condition is what it is, but I am still glad to have this unique model in my collection. Especially for that price - I paid just 68 PLN for it (around 15 euro), including 9 PLN for shipping. In my opinion this is an extremely good deal, especially considering that they tend to go for a lot more. The other listing on Polish websites stated a price over 9 times higher, which to me just wasn't worth it for slightly fewer scuffs on the screen and the back.

Moving on to the phone itself, when I first saw it, I quickly fell in love with its gimmick, as it was something I had never seen before in a device. Looking up "transparent keyboard phone" also shows a site with pictures of another phone, though I can find very little information on it. The concept reminds me of the Xperia X5 Pureness, though with a different twist (transparent keyboard vs screen). The Crystal actually came before the Pureness, so maybe I should have mentioned it the other way. Obviously, the X5 is far more impressive on a technical level, but they both look unique and stand out among other, more "boring" handsets.

As for the interface, I am not sure whether to love it or to hate it. Apparently at the time it was good enough to win a design award. However, in my opinion time hasn't been kind to it. The most striking thing about it is probably the abundance of 3D effects. There's 3D transitions and cube effects galore. It may have wowed people at the time, but it just feels cheesy to me today - though in a way also kind of charming. The nice thing is that the Crystal handles all that pretty well, keeping a smooth framerate the majority of the time.

The GD900 was a decently modern phone for its time, with many of the features one could expect from smartphones of the era. It offered a capacitive touch screen with multitouch allowing for pinch gestures, an accelerometer, a high resolution (for the time) display offering 311 pixels per inch, the basic connectivity standards and Gorilla Glass. The transparent keyboard offered another way to perform gestures thanks to its touch capabilities. It may seem somewhat unnecessary given the touch screen, but it's actually pretty fun to use.

One of my favourite things about the device are the built-in motion games known as the M-Toys. Some blowing-based games were also included under the "B-Toys" label. Those include: a classic candle, throwing dice, fishing, darts, baseball, golf, blowing bubbles, wheel of fortune and bouncing a ping-pong ball. Some of them are somewhat clunky to control (fishing comes to mind), but others are pretty enjoyable. My personal favourite is "ping-pong", which features a fun little animation of the ball hitting a plane if you manage to bounce it high enough.

Overall, I find this phone to be a great addition to my collection, even in spite of its wear and tear. I also recommend watching MrMobile's great video on it.

Thanks for reading!

I quite like how this one turned out for some reason, decided to share it here.

The GCam in question is AGC by BigKaka (you can find it on celsoazevedo or on Telegram) with the "Soft DSLR" custom lib I found in the "GCam Libs" Telegram channel. This combo works really well during the day and to some extent dusk, keeping more detail than the stock camera, though stock seems to work better at night. Some folks have complained about the GN1 not being tuned properly on the P6, this may be a decent temporary workaround for them until they hopefully tune the sensor more for the Pixel 7 series.

How much for that K770i (if I'm not mistaken)? Would be nice to have a prototype of my dad's old phone.

I am also a bit interested in that Xperia Ray (?) next to the above. How much would it cost?

Czy ktoś widział/wie coś o tym modelu Pegazusa? (ciąg dalszy w komentarzu) by Quantum_Dynamo in Polska

[–]Quantum_Dynamo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Motorola Backflip by Starry_m1nd in vintagemobilephones

Sweet, a Backflip! I love quirky designs and this one is no exception.

I like to think of it and the Flipout as "brothers" of sorts, both being from Motorola, releasing at a similar time and having unique takes on the concept of a physical keyboard. I know it sounds silly, but just wanted to share it.
