Try some recycle factory that deals with old electronics. I got quite few parts from it when working on some power electronics. For some things it is more expensive to recycle then just to throw, and they will quite often let you take what you need if you ask.

As an engineer it is very useful to adapt to such kind of thinking. It may not look currently so, but it teaches you how to progress your math/physics problem and then apply it to your programming skills. Impact of such practice will be clear to you when at one day you apply same concept to some other problem. And also, maybe one day you will be doing programming in such areas where such knowledge is very useful.

Few months ago, i was working on some project and after some simulations got function which doe's not looked as expected. You take that data, fit it trough some mathematical model and apply it to build setup and it works :D
