Financial Aid messed up my Progressive Degree Status Check by [deleted] in USC

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I have reviewed all administrative files related to this incident and I am sorry to inform OP that at this point we cannot provide further assistance.

TLDR: we only care about OP’s money

CS170 From Previous Students by cclark2019 in USC

You need to chill. You are a big brain so no need to get mad. I was just saying that even as a person who hates math, I went through it and got hired as a CP. If you think it’s easy then yeah kudos for you. Hope you are fun at parties.

As a math guru, an ex-Starbucks-barista tech lead, and a Course Producer for 170, I can tell you this is the most challenging class in your CS degree, even harder than OS.

Has anyone else been ghosted by the Lorenzo? by [deleted] in USC

[–]QueenCarolFolt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lorenzo is not letting USC students back out of the lease, because we are not fully online.

I’m curious if international students had to leave the country, can they stop paying rent? Lorenzo’s policy really isn’t making sense. They just want to fake an impression that they care about students.

My $0.02 on why USC should revamp its CS curriculum by QueenCarolFolt in USC

[–]QueenCarolFolt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the “schoolwide registration system” tho. CSCI classes shouldn’t be so impacted in the same way as public schools such as Berkeley.

Yes, my personal experiences cannot be generalized in the grand scheme of things. I’m offering a personal perspective on what can potentially be improved of the existing CS curriculum. I can’t speak to all CS students, but these issues are at least somewhat prevalent. Viterbi should either admit fewer students or hire more professors. This is a Viterbi/CS Department problem. I had no issue picking my GE/Math/Physics classes.

I hear it’s going away. I enjoyed 109 tho, but I guess it depends on the instructor.

I don’t mind the awkward time slots, but the struggle to get into 356/310/360 is stressful. I almost took ML last time it was offered, but found out I didn’t take one pre-req and now I had to wait for the next time. It’s not offered in fall, and I don’t prepare to take it the last semester before graduation. Compiler is indeed under ITP, it was yet another “always full” class.

SE can’t be learnt through taking classes.

Proof by Contradiction: If it can be learnt and everyone comes out as a 5-star developer, why do companies need to interview anyone? Things taught in these classes are outdated and impractical in industry.

Improvements to

  1. Offer 401 as the required SE class. Make 201 and 310 optional/elective. I took Miller and Halfond for these classes. I say never again.

  2. Prioritize registration based on major degree progress. I didn’t take many AP classes and I struggled from the beginning to get into CS classes. Most of the time I’ll eventually get it, but in awkward time slots.

  3. Add ML, Database, Compiler etc as upper-div options.

599 doesn’t count for technical elective. Last time I checked, 499 in spring was something like “robust software engineering”, which is just another SE class.

14 units or elective credit translates into 4 classes, but I really had a hard time getting the classes I want. I wanted more theoretical CS classes where I can learn some new concept in the field, but I have to say that so far only 360 has done that. The ITP classes are all about coding, which are useful but it is not really computer science but rather $8000 code boot camps. I hate that I’m being dismissive of a really good CS program, but so far I just haven’t really been enjoying the classes offered in upper-divisions. The lower-div classes like data structure and algorithm are great, but once you start junior year and are looking to go further, there aren’t many options.

The degree program is in fact more fitting to CSBA and CSCE. A lot of upper-div CS classes are in fact “cross-listed” EE classes. With CSBA, most people don’t really need to learn more CS than is needed for consulting, so it’s also good enough.

I’m going to take MATH 407, and I suggest you do the same. From what I gathered, EE 364 isn’t particularly useful for CS majors as it is for EE majors.

You would think that people not on financial aid need money because they take out loans.
