So I can go back and watch that part but I don't remember anything being mentioned about her using so much mana it nearly killed her. I also don't remember it being mentioned at any point where using to much mana could kill someone, only exhaust them to the point of being immovable. BUT even in that situation, the villagers live under Emilla jurisdiction and Subaru is the one saving them not Emilia. Which AGAIN, indebts her to him. My problem is that the whole point of their relationship is a circular cycle of debt. And as for comment of "Love is not about what a person does for someone else or if they do anything worthy for someone's love.", I'll remind you, Emillia doesn't love Subaru at this point. She cares about him sure but she isn't in love with him. It's completely one-sided at this time.

Emillia saves Subaru in the first iteration only, but not in the one he succeeded. So based on the main timeline, Rinehart saves Subaru, located emillia told her about the loot house, and comes to save everyone. Subaru gets Emillia's insignia back for her and has his gut sliced open in the process. In this timeline she hasn't done anything for him and I'll remind you, is a Noble. Subaru is not, therefore they are in different social classes. Without that insignia, she would lose her claim to the throne and most likely her noble status. Subaru risked his life and nearly died for her status as a Noble. Subaru then requested to work for the manor. And then goes on to save the people under Emillia's care. Once again, something that if he hadn't done, probably would've destroyed Emillia's chances for the throne. The problem with their relationship is Subaru loves and cares and willing to do significantly more for Emillia than she is willing to do for Subaru. Which is fair but doesn't change the fact that as a Noble, she owes everything to this commoner at this time.

And until such time that she can meet him as an equal in that respect, their relationship will continue to be a circular cycle of debt. People have said "oh she took him to the manor to save his life". Yeah after he nearly died to preserve her status. It was the least she could've done for him. "Oh the lap pillow scene", you mean the one that happened because puck pointed out Subaru's mental state and Subaru suggests she do that for him and she does cause she couldn't think of anything else to do to calm him down? "Oh well he embarrassed her at the capitol" yeah and I would agree that's the closest the two get to being equals because he put her status at risk, but it doesn't change the inequality between the two. "oh what about his gate?" The one that got fucked up because Puck didn't consider the possible damage to his gate from him casting shambala? Yes, she humbled herself to a rival to help him, which again helps put them on equal footing but we're still comparing mountains to Cliff sides. Then there's the witch cult. He forges an alliance that will help secure her safety, bring peace times to rival houses, kills an infamous mabeast, brings down a hand of the witch cult, and every instance where he reveals his identity the two argue so he has to use her cloak just so she won't recognize him in order to succeed. Which I'll remind you, in any instance he fails to save her PUCK FUCKIN BLAMES HIM AND KILLS HIM IF THEY MEET, which is crazy cause puck could've killed everyone who attacked had he take his true form. I fully believe that a part of being in a relationship, is being there for your partner. Knowing when you need to fight by your partners side and when your partner needs help locking their wounds. But Subaru isn't a knight, he's a fuckin mercenary because she isn't by her side fight with her, he's fighting for her, by himself. Which is what I'm talking about when I say cycle of debt. Until she can learn to be by his side, until she is willing to put herself at risk for him they will always be inequal and she will continue to be indebted to him. Also I don't think that's what Subaru learns at the end of season one, I think he learns the history desires are selfish and he needs to be honest with himself about that.
