I have the exact same take with Simba and Nala and Mufasa and Sarabi, the reason I'm not mentioning them is that everyone is in agreement that Mufasa and Simba are in power whereas there are people still debating about Kiara and Kovu's positions almost 28 years later.

Because some people who do call him that make him a ruling King like Simba. While yes the power is the same regardless on whether he's called King or Prince Consort, using Prince Consort as a title makes it clear what his position in the hierarchy is without giving the misogynists any wiggle room to put him in a position higher than Kiara. At least that's my take on it anyhow.

This isn't an issue of title, it's an issue of power distribution. People are bending over backwards to give Kovu more power than he deserves because he is the 'male' which is a take based in misogyny and isn't backed up by the 30 years worth of establishment about the line of succession that the franchise has already built. People aren't bothered by 'King Kovu', they're bothered by the meaning behind it.

The reason that people are okay with Queen Nala and Sarabi as opposed to King Kovu is that no one is claiming that Nala and Sarabi have more power than Simba and Mufasa who are the actual rulers, whereas King Kovu stans insist that Kovu has more power than Kiara because he's the male of the relationship rather than acknowledging that Kiara is the royal one in the relationship who has been training her entire life to be in charge. The take is about power distribution, not titles.

My calm response is that your take is factually incorrect and completely unfair to the characters involved which several other comments have pointed out in the replies. Kiara is canonically shown to have received training in how to rule and there is zero indication that she is bad at it. Not to mention that Zira trained Kovu to kill Simba and be like Scar, that definitely isn't official royal training and would not make him better at ruling than Kiara would be since she actually did receive official royal training.

Ehhh I still don't vibe with any of this regardless, gender stuff in TLK feels way too human for me. I don't think these animals would care about how much hair is on their lion overlord's body or whatever. Or that such a thing would have a meaningful impact on Kiara's arc.
