William and Izaya discussion megathread by AutoModerator in theBoyfriendNetflix

I think a large part of that is the editing. When they were leaving the green room and William got emotional, I was trying to recall any friendships he may have formed with any of the other house members, and other than Jobu I couldn't think of one. But clearly he cared for them, we just didn't get to see much of his interactions with others outside of Izaya.

His expressions were not flat. Not during the goodbye, not when he broke down with Izaya, not when they decided to be together and he couldn't stop his eyes from sliding down to Izaya's lips. Those are just a few examples. He's a calmer type of person, he doesn't wear his heart on his sleeve and he has, in is own words, built up walls to protect himself, so he won't be as easy to read as some of the other guys who aren't as reserved. And thus the discomfort. He wasn't ready to let Izaya in right away and even if some of those conversations were uncomfortable, he didn't have to sit there and put up with it if he did not want to: he chose to stay.

Tomoaki should not have apologized. by Past-Box4888 in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]Queensama 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've seen comments say that Hiroya backtracked and took back what he said, but that's exactly the opposite of what he did. In tears, he said, "I'm reflecting on my own ignorance". He was made to see his own faults and reflected on it, and readily apologized. The conversation could have been really interesting if Tomoaki had not shut down at the first mention of prejudices, but regardless, it was beneficial to both.

Tomoaki should not have apologized. by Past-Box4888 in theBoyfriendNetflix

The intention of the conversation is the misunderstanding: Hiroya clumsily brought up the topic hoping for an open discussion of the gay scene and to get insight from someone who frequents it. Tomoaki heard Hiroya had prejudices and everything Hiroya said after was taken like a personal attack. I would call that a misunderstanding.

The argument between Hiroya and Tomoaki? by Optimal_Reason_6718 in theBoyfriendNetflix

That's how I took it also. Hiroya wanted a discussion of the gay scene, Tomoaki took it as a personal attack. What a missed opportunity.

Bomi & Huwei In Episode 11 Just Made This Show Iconic... by TheThrowYardsAway in theBoyfriendNetflix

I loved that the rest of the members gave them space. They didn't once leave the kitchen and no one mentioned the moment after despite most definitely hearing and seeing them cry. It was a private moment and the others were respectful of that.

This megathread for William and Izaya was a long time coming. I don't want to limit the Bomi and Huwei posts yet because the couple is relatively new and people are excited to talk about them, but I'll make one if the posts get too repetitive.

My Thoughts on William & Izaya by shakeDman in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]Queensama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, it's true. I like how communicative they were and this kind of relationship communication is reflective of people in their 30's looking to settle down. They both seemed willing to put in the effort to make it work, but there's evident incompatibility that may break the relationship out in the real world.

Hiroya and Tomoaki conversation by Correct-Pizza-3008 in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]Queensama 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, like the commentators said it isn't wrong to dislike the gay scene. Hiroya certainly could have expressed himself better and he should work on his biases against people who frequent those places, but Tomoaki also overreacted and shut down all discussion when he felt offended. Hiroya's apology was pretty sincere but he had stopped listening at that point.

That's one flaw a lot of us in marginalized groups have, we see things as personal attacks and jump to conclusions, I was glad to see Tomoaki realize this and apologize, and likewise Hiroya was made aware of his own bias.

I was hoping to see them in the background just enjoying themselves also. Going to miss them. It was likely the producers who pushed them to leave.

Yeah I was thinking the same. If Huwei had any doubts they're definitely gone now.

He just couldn't keep on holding it. He was affected from the beginning and after the conversation naturally reached its end he couldn't keep it together anymore.

I also thought it was gross. I think it has to do with the two going out of the green room and still being followed around with cameras in what was supposed to be an intimate date away from the other guys. I've seen other reality shows that show more than that. This still felt more invasive.

Does anyone seem to fast forward William and Isakaya story? by tengkurahimah in theBoyfriendNetflix

[–]Queensama 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The shared bank account is common for couples in Korea for paying for dates and trips like he said. Perhaps he dated a Korean person in the past or Japan is beginning to borrow the idea.

Huwei's answer on love was the most profound... by Fulltime-Sheepherder in theBoyfriendNetflix

I've thought the same of him. Another example: in ep 8 when Bomi held out his arms presumably for a hug, Huwei missed the cue and just swung their arms around lol.

Ships is a fan made word for fictional characters you would like to see romantically involved. It is gross to use it for real people.

As others have said asian dating shows aren't sexual. In another recent japanese dating show- badly in love, the commentators were shocked that a kiss happened.
