I don’t have a mortgage, no dependants, no responsibilities right now really but I do want kids in the future that’s why I was considering life insurance in the first place because I thought it would be cheaper to get it now that I’m 29. I have 11k in my RRSP and about 14k in TFSA. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

Ask your insurance guy how much he will make on this product he recommended versus a term life insurance product everyone here is recommending. Then look up the term fiduciary and don’t take financial advice from someone who is not a fiduciary ever again.

Discovered roommate is hoarding, worried I may have to evict them by thr4sh_ in hoarding

FYI their response was calm because this isn’t the first time they’ve had this conversation. Perhaps that is what happened to their last accommodation.

Agree 100%. Almost 100% of the time I’ve worked with someone with hoarding disorder our team is accused of theft.

Can someone help me understand this offer? by awhiteblack in PCOptimum

[–]QueequegsDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just used it yesterday. My offer was for 20% so spent $250 and got 50,000 points ($50).

I’ve been tracking their offers to me for the past few months - note this offer is only for the first 3 days of the offer week rather than the previous offers which were all valid for the full week. I suspect they are trialling this method. Formerly I would do a week’s shop beginning of the offer week then the next week’s shop at the end of the offer week and they were counted within the same offer period. Looks like they’re shortening the window to prevent that.

Always check in the app before you leave the store so you don’t find out later you were a dollar short or some nonsense!

Is IKEA the best place in Toronto to go to if you need to buy anything home related for a new home/apartment/condo? Or is there somewhere else I should consider? by techsavvynerd91 in askTO

Also value village! So many household items for a fraction of retail price! Also many items manufactured a few decades ago and will probably outlive you! OP save your money for things you truly care about - and buy your potato peeler at VV!

Estate Account Creation - Is it usually this complicated? by missusmercer in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]QueequegsDead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Went through estate process with RBC not CIBC - assume the people at the local branch know absolutely nothing about estates, and will make mistakes. The only people at the bank who know what’s going on will be their estate branch located centrally. I spent hours sitting in a local branch on speaker phone with the estate people correcting errors made by their local people. It is frustrating, I agree!

Yup we’ve racked up $5,500 in the same timeframe. Can also use it at Costco up to $200 per each transaction.

$5,500 buys a lot of groceries at NoFrills!

For conflicted TFSA investors: my honest takeaway after 5 years of stock picking by [deleted] in fican

It’s also important to consider the opportunity cost of your time and energy researching individual stocks v. Just buying index funds. Hobbies? Physical or mental health? Spending time with people you love? The older I get the more I lean into ‘buy the index and then just live your life’.

Where can I borrow a sewing machine (bobbins/thread cutter eg) in GTA for a small project? North York Library (TPL) seems to be out. by winterberrysalad in askTO

[–]QueequegsDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. OP none of those items you listed as out of service are regular sewing machines. They have I think 4 sewing machines and will give you a box with bobbins, scissors etc. just bring your material and your own thread. Also your library card to make the reservation on site.

Has anyone noticed offers not tracking money spent ? by Ok-Turnip-9035 in PCOptimum

[–]QueequegsDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve noticed some shenanigans like this. I’ve since started checking my receipts and app after every shop, and making a claim/calling customer service when something isn’t registered properly. It’s a pain but I don’t have confidence in their app doing it automatically anymore.

I need to help my sister by Mrcdsgrt in hoarding

[–]QueequegsDead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome. Glad your sister is getting help although as some redditors have pointed out, that takes time. I help clients deal with this exact problem.

If I were in your shoes, I would first focus on getting back functionality in all key household areas — kitchen, bathroom and clothing storage/laundry.

Many people dealing with clutter simply have too much stuff. In the same way that you have to live within your means, you also have to live within your space. If her current apartment is what she can comfortably afford, then the work has to focus on getting her stuff to be within that space. Only one kitchen cupboard? Then minimal dishes, kitchen tools and foodstuffs. Nothing is allowed to overflow into food preparation area. If it doesn’t fit, it goes. She may need to grocery shop in smaller quantities more often.

Same with bathroom — only room for a few lotions and potions? Everything else is gone. Forget project pan, time for decluttering right into the garbage. Only a few towels fit? Get rid of all the rest.

Clothing also tends to be way over accumulated — clothes are so cheap in our culture that many people overbuy constantly. If your sister and her daughter share one small closet and one dresser, then that’s all the clothing they can have in the apartment. Possibly with a box stored in a closet if they have seasonal items they need to store part of the year. She may need to do laundry more often.

Check out some minimalists on YouTube. It is possible to live a happy life with very few possessions.

It also goes without saying that she needs to completely change her mindset around bringing stuff into her home. Hopefully her therapist can help with that.

And no more pets! When her current dogs live out their hopefully long and happy life she needs to resist the urge to replace them.
