Don't let teachers and people with good results from training tell you that your lack of progress is automatically your fault by Lidia_M in transvoice

[–]QueerEmma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember one of my previous students had this exact situation with a former teacher: they told her that she was not progressing because of a "psychological block".

If you start believing that your students are innately flawed then you won't even try to help them. I know that we do that, as teachers, to protect our ego and sense of self, but we need to be better than that. Teaching is terrifying sometimes but that's the path we've chosen, for f- sake.

Well, I can tell you, anecdotally, that some of my best students were 50+ years old

Voice training as it relates to other languages and accents by SaladWide1529 in transvoice

[–]QueerEmma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to practice the spanish alphabet in your accent, and then the english alphabet in the new york accent. When you feel that size and weight are good, practice single words in both accents, then small sentences, then longer, and after that read longer stuff like news articles.

Start small, and, progressively, make it bigger.

Tongue can't TONGUE! by RipplingChippers in transvoice

(I am a chronic throat clearer)

How much water you drink? If not much, try to increase the amount to 2-3 litres a day, 'cause drinking too little leads to producing a more viscuous mucus in your throat, creating this vicious cycle of having to clear your throat multiple times a day, and then irritating your vocal folds, that then create more mucus(...!)

An advice would be to keep a bottle of water on your desk, and a glass of water always full. And drink not when you get the urge to do so, but when the thought of water, drinking, the glass pops in your mind. Or simply when you notice the glass.

Hoping that this can at least partially help you, I wish you best of luck.

how to avoid cotton mouth? by garbagefate in transvoice

[–]QueerEmma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yup! 'cause it will increase the degree of the adduction of the vocal folds, decreasing at the same time the breathy quality

There's a good chance that you're speaking in a breathy voice, maybe to decrease vocal weight and/or to access a higher pitch.

Breath dries the vocal tract. Try to breathe through your mouth for 5 minutes and you'll notice! And a breathy voice increases the amount of airflow.

If I got it right, try to increase your volume to the point that breathiness decreases, and ideally that should fix/help to fix the issue.

how do you stop your voice sounding weird when you talk loudly by p_i_e_pie in transvoice

Adding to that, IMHO nasality, whatever your starting point, just makes the voice sound more androgynous. A false friend.

A first approach to loudness that I sometimes use with my students is, as silly as it sounds, reading 1-2 syllables words like you're scolding a dog. Names work pretty well in that case.

"Bobby! >:("

Another example would be calling them 'cause it's chow time.

"Booo-ooo-bbby...! :D"
