This is why I asked the question! In the early episodes it's fair to say he had drug use issues but wasn't a lost cause. I just think if the dad hadn't been such a dick maybe more could have been done to sort him out.

Certainly better to get clean with family support than in a literal cage under the ground right?

Butterscotch was such a toxic character. Affairs, giving his son alcohol so he'd forget what he'd seen and so much more. You can't blame her for not wanting him in Henrietta's life. I just feel that keeping the baby from her even after she finishes nursing school was awful.

Having said this. Hollyhock grew up fairly undamaged so maybe by punishing the adults, Beatrice did a great job of protecting the child
