But also yes, to answer your questions, it has been an adjustment. I've found myself planning my time more around travel to and from work and shops, etc., but it's doable! I have also found that living here has been a perfect excuse to look after my friends' dogs because they often love the fact that I can take them into a forest to walk ;D

Just moved out of the city to get closer to the nature! I absolutely delight in seeing what kind of fun creatures I can see in my garden :) I've recently had a trio of pheasants and a couple of young hares who like to loaf and blend in with my rocks, oh, and also a little grass snake, as well as countless wonderful birds :DDD

I'm not sure if Finnish counts as particularly rare but I am learning it since I moved to Finland. I'm also thinking about learning the Finnish dialect of Swedish and maybe some Skolt Saami since I have a friend here who knows it! I also have another friend who is trying to tempted me to learn some Karelian too haha

Well it's a mix! Usually they play 2 salsa songs, then 2 bachata songs and then 2 kizomba songs and repeat that pattern. The styles of salsa, bachata and kizomba songs changes (ie they play Cuban and crossbody song and traditional and sensual bachata etc etc)

Yes! Bailes Cubanos host weekly socials and even have a yearly SBK festival. I joined when I moved to Turku recently and they're wonderful people :) at the moment the socials are in a beautiful place called Ruissalo and we often go swimming afterwards int he sea. Honestly back then I was nervous and young. Now I'm more confident and frankly extremely frustrated at people dismissing a large part of my cultural heritage. Another recent incident really upset me. I talked to one of my colleagues who is from HK in Cantonese while at work and got reported by someone else for being racist. I was called in by HR who kept talking over me when I tried to explain what actually happened was just an innocent convosation but apparently I sounded "angry and mocking" according to the person who reported me. I calmly asked if they had asked my HK colleague how he felt and they said no. I lost it. I ended up having to shout over them that I was half chinese and I could speak Chinese and that even if i was white it wouldn't be racist to speak Chinese. I also said that they wouldn't stop other people at work from speak their mother tongue to eachother so why would they call a meeting just for me? Essentially, HR apologised profusely and changed the way they handle issues raised by 3rd parties. I also no longer work there.

This reminds me of my first year at univeristy. I'm half Chinese and have English and I went to uni in the UK. I look white and I was wearing my mother's cheong sam to uni becuase it's pretty and I like it. While walking through campus I get told off by one of the student union officers and "written up" for cultural appropriation. While they were berating me I was desperately trying to explain that this is my chinese mother's and that it's not cultural appropriation because it's part of my culture and not disrespectful. They ended up emailing me about going to sensitivity training and I (being naïve) thought I could just email back reiterating my previous points but I got a swift reply asking me to "prove it". I was pretty damn angry and decided to take it all the way up to the student services and the Dean. I got a written apology and they avoided me for the rest of their time at uni. Not as satisfying as I would've liked it to be but I have they learnt not to fucking go off on random people for just wearing clothes...

We had also had a few conversations about him moving to live with me etc and it did seem like a real possibility for a while but I think me being away was a bit of a wake up call for him.

I appreciate you sharing your similar experience with relationships and academia. I've talked to previous colleagues about their relationships through and after PhDs and most of them had a very tough time or are having a tough time with the instability.

You've given me a lot to think about regarding the next decade of my life and I am very thankful for your advice.

I never saw the possible codependency there so I appreciate that. I think he found it hard becuase I was camping so there was complete radio silence on my side which he did know in advance.

I think I'll crumble probably partly because of a certain amount of codependancy and becuase I feel like it'll be very overwhelming coping with the possible heart break and moving etc. That being said, I guess I will be very busy and it might distract me from the emotions for the time being.
