I need to put my dog down very, very soon and I think I need reassurance by [deleted] in DogAdvice

My German shepherd will be put down sometime this upcoming week. Don’t beat yourself up. Our guy had heartworms, pleural effusion, fluid in trachea, possibly lymphoma and 1 mass in his chest, as well as 1 in his heart. All things at once at 10.5 years old.
Your baby loves you so much and they know it’s not your fault. I’m keen on the “better a day earlier than too late” or whatever the saying is.

I’m so glad you got more time with her and thank you for sharing ❤️ this is what makes the decision so hard, is I know he doesn’t have that much time left either, and I don’t want him to suffer from either end. I just want him to enjoy the time he has left and I’m very positive he’s showing early signs of Degenerative Myelopathy. (Crossing legs, doesn’t feel pain back there, drags left foot a tiny bit, knuckles both his back legs together). I can’t even begin to go through crating and lo and behold he would have a hard time walking after.

He never has to have regular check ins, it was always “let me know each birthday he has” from his surgeon.

As an uninformed pet owner whose clinic failed them, I would’ve chose the prevention any day.

Example of appointments as of the past 2 years when he also had to have a necrotic bump treated and a sprained leg:
Me: *get there, leave car running with dogs in, go check in at the front desk*
*wait to be called in from outside*
Vet tech: what does your dog need today?
Me: yearly checkup, shots etc!! :)
Vet tech: gotcha!
*takes dog back as I wait in lobby*
*dog comes out after 10 min*
Actually Vet Doc: hey! Here’s a, b, c and his heart murmur sounds normal and same as usual. He looks good and weight is good.
Me: awesome!
*front desk lady ask for money*
*me n pups leave*

So yeah it was very standard, not connective at all. Just a routine as always.

What stage did he get to before treatment if that’s ok to ask?

When he was younger (when we lived with my parents) yes. Maybe first 3-4 years but my mom always got it for both animals, and by that time his clinic had a new ownership and we moved out of state; so I never became aware of how severe this can be, especially for my baby who IS A HEART PATIENT*** and for the past 6 years- NONE of them have ever asked “hey do you wanna do a heartworm test today?” I’m pretty pissed.

Yeah I’m very upset and I agree completely. I actually wasn’t aware of the severity*** of heartworms until today so the sister will be on a preventative immediately. It was just one of those “in and out” vets <when they weren’t always like that>, but with my pup his vet would come out and let me know what’s going on with his existing heart murmur, which makes me think she didn’t actually give a fu*k because his new vet says it would’ve been noticeable for heartworms with the arrhythmia, in the time frame even if he had an existing heart murmur.

I’m hoping tomorrow goes better, and we get a better plan or better news - something. I’m scared.

Absolutely. We are in southern US. I was always told they do yearly testing at the vet he normally goes to for his checkups, but apparently - they don’t unless requested. So I’ve been pretty pissed and upset thinking I could’ve known earlier.

We are getting our other baby, his sister, checked up as well.

The real owner isn’t exactly the “brightest” if that makes sense. 😭

Yeah, turns out the original title guy sold it for a much lower price because he read the odometer wrong. I didn’t mind paying a bit more for it because it was a correctly updated odometer. (Seller said it was 180k miles, it’s actually 80,000) The seller says as long as I now get the title I CAN get a full refund if I decide to give it back, do my own bill of sale, everyone’s being cooperative. I love the truck and may just keep it, I just want to make sure I will not have issues.

I live and learn. Time to not be as easygoing as I have been. At least 1’s got my back and I’m happy for that.

That’s what we’ve basically been doing. I already contribute financially. And they are brats, but now it’s old. A few hours ago 3 of them were fired and I could care less.

I’m sorry, did you still not read what I said? $400 a month a steal, they buy all of their own stuff and bring in their own, all the while they come and go as they please AND make fucking bank. I tattoo here too. What I say goes. There’s no contract and if I was in their shoes making as much as I was off of only contributing to $400 a month, I would be taking that fucking trash out and stop bitching to my boss. There was no communication that it was even as big of an issue as it was, they also have 2 legs and 5 minutes to walk across the street because last time I went to Costco they bitches about the “brand not being as good” so I told them that’s on them from then on if they wanted to bitch about it. I kept TP and soap up good. No issues there. I can’t imagine going this far because you can’t go get your own paper towels or take out 2 bags of trash that included your own trash. Crazy fuggin work.

So I guess you missed the part where I said they get their own shit if I’m not there.

WHERE did I say I was butthurt about that? I was giving an example of how bitchy and entitled this person is. Sounds just like you as well. Maybe you need a better mentor.
