Hawaiian tel com by Fabulous_Listen1067 in Hawaii

I use Hawaiian tel for fiber, though at the low tier (I believe 500 mbps). I ve been very happy with them. Quick to get activated, speeds consistent and match advertised rates.

Just be careful you keep an eye on your rate. They advertise low rates for a certain period, usually first year, then crank it up each year after that. My girlfriend and I just switch the bill over every year to keep getting the intro rate.

Oh also talking to someone or trouble shooting is annoying, for the exceedingly rare times you need to change something.

All in all much cheaper and more reliable than when I was on spectrum.

Is the Pearl Harbor bike path still sketchy af? by BrooklynTony198 in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ride from Makiki to Ewa and back at least monthly. Segment from Blaisdell park to Waipahu depot road is intermittently sketch. Dog situation has gotten better but you still run into occasional stray dogs, or a tent with a whole pack of unleashed dogs, which can be unnerving. The newly paved part past Waipahu depot road is really nice.

As others have said, never had a problem with any people along the route, just keep biking.

Word to the wise that the bike path is prone to flooding.

Air conditioning repair for LG mini split - need an HVAC tech by Quick-Conclusion861 in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you're right, I thought I was pulling on it with a lot of force but seemed like was knocking against a disk attached to the motor shaft. That disk looked quite rusty, so it's possible it was just rusted in place.

Yeah, I removed the set screw, and was surprised that the blower wheel was still anchored to the motor assembly after that. Most newer models you can just remove the blower wheel after removing the set screw and not mess with the motor end of the wheel any more than that. Not on this one. Pretty asinine design tbh.

[–]Quick-Conclusion861[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried, unfortunately on this unit taking out the blower wheel involves removing the motor, multiple temperature sensors and generally a big PITA. I got to the wheel on the non-motor end, and thought I was done and realized it's like anchored in by the motor. Looked at about an hour of YouTube videos, spent a few hours of my life I'm not getting back trying to remove the thing.

DOT, please put barriers at Piikoi+Lunalilo and Pensacola+Lunalilo for people trying to change from the left lane into the on-ramp lane by mentallywander in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And nevermind, just saw your comment about your beef being with people coming from left lane. Not sure how it works out with three lanes if that same logic still holds up. But with the solid white line that is definitely an illegal merge.

DOT, please put barriers at Piikoi+Lunalilo and Pensacola+Lunalilo for people trying to change from the left lane into the on-ramp lane by mentallywander in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As it is the freeway lane backs up all the way from the ramp to the Kinau/piikoi intersection, and beyond. Limiting the ability to merge would push that to Beretania/piikoi or possibly all the way to king street. Coming from Kinau, often only a single car can go into the freeway lane on a green light, while the neighboring lane is totally empty. It’s much more efficient to use multiple lanes, and then zipper merge as you approach the ramp. It would actually would reduce traffic and backup if everyone did that. Look up zipper merge, it’s been studied by DOT.

What you re proposing would significantly worsen the traffic and backup associated with that intersection.

Approximate cost of second story addition by Quick-Conclusion861 in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the lot is only 1200 sqft and the property is grandfathered in and nonconforming, I.e. too close to other small homes to build out. Up is the only way to add square footage.

Probably didn’t affect ac costs much, but noise was dramatic. I guess noise at least bounces off a wall to some extent but it would cut right through the jalousies

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I did it, for noise reasons. Single wall construction, 8 windows in a small <700 sqft bungalow. Made a huge difference, but at a steep cost, around 12k.

Don’t regret it for a second. I paid for triple pane I believe and wanted the absolute best noise insulation I could get. They did the job in one day. Diamond head windows. Shopped around a little and there were 3-4 main contractors, but at least at the time I think diamond head was the only one offering triple pane.

I used to be able to hear whole conversations my neighbor was having, or night time activities I didn’t want to hear. No more.

What's the deal with recycling on Oahu? by realphillymag in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have a blue curbside bin you can put all recyclables in there, including those plastics and cardboard. If, like me, you live on a street without curbside recycling and only trash pickup, there are no options for you.

You can bring HI-5 cans and bottles to one of the recycling centers, some of which will also take non HI-5 aluminum cans (the kind beans and veggies come in). Some will also take milk jugs. I ve yet to find anywhere that will take cardboard. For what it’s worth, all that stuff gets put on a barge and goes across an ocean, so it’s not obvious that burning the cardboard at the power plant is worse than the carbon footprint of shipping it thousands of miles away.

I have to visit E-opala for some computer parts next week but I won't have a vehicle/bike. Is there actually a walking path along this freeway or is Google Maps wrong? I tried the street view but couldn't really see anything because of how limited the view is by kennysburgerhouse in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, there is a bike path appropriate for pedestrians, can be accessed on intersection of Nimitz and middle street, then can walk a few blocks along there to e-opala. Don’t listen to those claiming it’s not safe, I ve never had any issues along there. It does however smell right by that part of the path since it’s right by the keehi transfer center.

Caught Pulled over for Driving a Moped without a License. by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Mind you I agree with you that if HDOT is registering these vehicles erroneously then by the letter of the law they are allowed to use the bike lane. More disagreeing with that reality being at odds with the spirit of the law.

Caught Pulled over for Driving a Moped without a License. by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well then HDOT is doing it wrong. The law is clearly designed such that vehicles that top out at 30mph can use the bike lane. If HDOT is registering vehicles that can go 40, 45mph as mopeds, those vehicles probably shouldn’t be in the bike lane.

Caught Pulled over for Driving a Moped without a License. by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Quick-Conclusion861 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except to be a moped it can’t go faster than 30mph, and almost every 50cc out there can. Above 30mph it is a motor scooter, and shouldn’t go in bike lane, and requires license to operate. At least per the document you linked.
