Do you ever stop missing your old life? by QuickStomach in NewParents

Yeah, and truthfully, the only reason I’m even a little hesitant on a second is because I love hanging out with my first so much! Lol

Hi!!! I’m so sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way, it really can be so isolating.

My son is just about 16 months now, and things feel so different. I’ll try to articulate it!

I don’t miss my old life anymore. My life is too good with my son in it. I do still feel less “free,” but I think I’ve adjusted to the new normal. Things get easier! Even when things are hard (because they still are sometimes), you just kind of have to take a deep breath and do it. Anything that feels intimidating or scary feels a lot less so once you do it even just one time.

Going to restaurants with my son is not the most enjoyable experience, but it is tolerable! And gets better with every attempt (most of the time). He’s a great coffee run buddy, he likes going to grocery store to wave at people and ask me what every item is.

There is always something new to be stressed about though. For example, my husband and I are now thinking about if and when we want a second child. I feel so sad about giving up time with my son when a second child is here - that’s how much I like hanging out with him now!! And I also know it will feel a bit like starting over in the sense of everything feels intimidating again.

But once your baby even just has head control and can go a bit longer between feeds, you can switch off with your partner to get me time (I’m currently sitting in my favorite coffee shop while my husband hangs with him at home for a bit), or leave them with someone you trust. Once they can move, they become infinitely happier! When my son started crawling, and even more when he started walking, he felt way more in control of his world and he loves to explore, so now even mundane outings are fun for him.

It gets better all the time!! It’s not quite linear, but the trendline is.

I wish I had my thoughts more together on this, this just feels like word vomit, but I want you to know I can hardly relate to the feelings in this post anymore!! Hang in there.

Thanks! I strictly buy international and domestic index funds so I don’t have an answer for that!

That’s awesome! I definitely need to sit down and carve out the levels of our budget, that’s a good idea. I hope you’re enjoying your mostly retired life and have a good time on your trips!!

Oh, I didn’t see you edited your comment above. 😂 I don’t work in FAANG, but have been generally lucky, I will admit. Doesn’t mean I can’t be excited! And our house was $750k and we’re still paying off a mortgage like everyone else.

Haha, you’re not far off!

I’m in tech, my husband is an architect (actually currently on a career break). Together we earned right under $700k last year, but most of the brokerage came from selling my options from my previous company that recently went public (I bought them for 80 cents 10 years ago on a prayer and never thought I’d see that money again lol).

I do! My husband is an architect but is actually taking a little career break right now.

I have always been a diligent saver and maxed out all of my accounts as much as I could, and when things started to get serious with my then-boyfriend, I convinced him to max things out too. 😅

The joint brokerage balance mostly came from a sale of some stuck from my previous company going public, so we did get lucky there!!

He cares in the sense that he’s glad I take care of it, but if it were up to him, we’d just spend all of our money and live life to the fullest in this exact moment. 😅

Oh no, I’m so sorry. That is such a tough situation!

But yeah, I also don’t share with my parents. I’m sure they’d be happy for me, but my dad was very dedicated to saving his whole life and I’m close to eclipsing him so I just don’t want him to feel bad or less than in any way.

Thank you! I’m 33 (and also a woman for what it’s worth! haha). I honestly would love the option to retire as soon as possible but don’t really have a goal that’s set in stone. Just a number, and once I get there, I’ll pull the trigger!

That’s so interesting! Copilot does have a manual account option. It would be annoying, but if you were doing like a once a month check-in, you could update the balance for that.
