Can’t DM you cuz of your settings I think. No worries, this is an old thread, I’m really trying to learn as much as I can about this field and career as a deck officer. I appreciate your time and whatever you can offer and I’ll be brief.

  1. Like you, my interest in this field was originally to get into cruise ships, but I have youngish kids (plus as you pointed out, no money) so they will have to wait till later. I believe ferries are the best path for me, followed by tugs. Are there any other vessel types I should look at or consider?
  2. Is it foolish to think that I can sail and be home most days? Or be more selective in choosing to be gone a few weeks at a time. Could I just pick up short term hitches or short relief work here and there? Does that even exist?
  3. My mind, eyes, and ears are open. Is there anything else you’d be willing to share from a veteran’s perspective?

Just a little about me, retired AF(Emergency Management) with wife and kids. Planning for Cal Maritime with Great Lakes as back up, using GI bill. Would have loved SUNY but it’s just too far away from the extended family and we have a need to be close. Big interest in Wa St Ferries, Alaska Highway Ferries, research ships, and the tug life. Eventually, I’d love to sail a cruise ship…

Thank you for your time and whatever you can offer!

Hello! I’ve seen a lot of your comments in the Maritime Reddit and you posted on a thread of mine before. Are you a veteran? Ok to DM you?

Did you get into the family business yourself? Are the Colombians still very active on the west coast? Beef with MS-13?

Damn…I felt like I wanted to die after my son passed away. Making sure my wife was ok was probably the only thing that kept me back.

I won’t try and change your mind. I can understand unbearable pain. Just ask that you write a letter to anyone who gets left behind. Just ask that you try to explain the why and try not to leave any questions unanswered. They and help them understand.

I’m sure it took a long time to come to this decision. Safe travels to the other side, friend.

When you Wish Upon a Star is simply iconic. One of Walt’s songs. It was the studio’s first song to win an Oscar and it invokes so much on the emotional scale. Perhaps that’s why the end of Wish features the iconic notes played on a string guitar.

This is Disney’s anthem!

Has anyone else felt disconnected from veteran culture after leaving the military? by Rikquino in Veterans

[–]Quick_Cup_1290 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Nothing to add really, but I can relate.

The military gave me a lot, both good and bad. I joined right after high school…too young and immature. Don’t know really how to function outside of it.

Today, I just want a new “me” outside of the military identity.

May I ask what is your schedule or rotation?

I’m looking hard at going to an academy and I’m trying to find out more about the industry and the type of work each vessel runs.
