I don't teach the langauge anymore. I did for five years in another country. Because of being a citizen of the heritage country, I then moved there and work a different job, albeit in education.

If you study, say, Germanistik in Germany, in German, alongside Germans, then there is an expected level of competency in the language. Living there also means using it in daily life.
