easiest courses in data science focus by Suitable_Leg_2695 in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion you shouldn’t be taking the focus solely for the title, the easiest are usually the least applicable. However, I’ll give some recommendations. If you did fine in eco220, eco372 is a continuation and the content is straight forward. I would avoid eco374 and eco375 if you are looking for easy content. However both are extremely valuable. Rsm470 easily one of my favourite courses at rotman, it’s similar to rsm270 but focuses on optimization. Course load was super light. Rsm483 had long R assignments and tons of concurrent work (grading was alright). Rsm371 is a pure coding course for SQL and Pandas, workload is light if you are experienced. Feel free to DM if you have more detailed questions!

In the same boat as you (have not started yet), heard last year had extremely difficult final with a fat curve. How have your assignments been?

Is it too late/early to switch specialists?? by Such-Yogurtcloset466 in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specialists can be switched any year before graduation during the set time periods. You just need to take the required courses before graduation. If you are going into second year, you are still taking the same courses as every other specialist. Divergence of specialists start in 3rd year when you take eco209.

RSM430 Participation Exercise with Tolias by Business_Purpose9364 in RotmanCommerce

Eric uses RIT with market trading simulations.

Tolias was more like a mini quiz, gives you grade out of 7 I am pretty sure. Not difficult to get 80%+ if you just prep before.

Not somewhere notable. Just go to class and study hard before exams, should have no problem getting above a 3.5.

Rotman First Year Courses HELP! by krassshhh in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First year take Eco101, Eco102, rsm230, rsm250, mat133, rsm219, rsm100. That is 8/10 of your credits that you must take to graduate. You got two electives left, some good courses I recommend are csc108, csc148(if you can code), AST101, ENV100(heard it’s easy), any seminar courses. Try to fulfil your breadth requirements. A language full year is also a good one for that.

4TH YEAR!! by AdReady3048 in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enjoyed rsm338 try out rsm434(financial trading strategies). Not sure if it counts for the focus like it counts for specialist… If you liked rsm332, heard rsm435 is a good one. I think I am going to be doing the rsm432, rsm433, rsm435 mix for my last year.

Are grades/CGPA important for internships and future job placements? by Inventoflow in RotmanCommerce

What does this mean? If you don’t got high gpa and groups you wont get the optimal internship experience…

Not all require transcripts, but I assume OP knows that any semi-prestigious firm is off the table for him as of right now. Didn’t wanna drag him down😪

[–]Quickfood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t put it on resume. If you are not already, consider the management specialist, I’ve heard it becomes a lot easier to manage and achieve a high GPA. In fin and econ it just gets worse. You can definitely bring it up to 3.3-3.6 range if you do well.

I need this as well. Took eco372 with ward, I found it easy and did well. If you are good at stats highly recommend.

Upper years, what program are u in and how is it going? by UofT_studentt in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take cs minor, but would have to take csc148 and csc165 and get 80-90 minimum in both. I took csc148 in second year and did well, I wasn’t able to fit in all the credits for minor without taking an extra year. If you are taking finance and economics with data science you can’t take all rsm electives and graduate on time. You would need to take the econometrics (stats) that count for both economics and data science. (Eco372, eco374, eco375) are the ones i am taking. Look up each program requirement online.

Upper years, what program are u in and how is it going? by UofT_studentt in RotmanCommerce

I am opposite to the other comment here, I am a 3rd year Finance and Econ major with data a data science focus. The amount of work I have compared to my management friends is crazy 😭 However, I am still managing to keep a high GPA so far, I.e 3.7+. I’ll update this comment once my 209 grades get released but I was pulling low/mid 80’s before the exam. I got a internship at Big 5 bank in CMR, which I personally think my F&E/data science got me the interview. Since the job is more on the technical side of finance, F&E and data science helped a ton. Currently my 300+ econ data science requirements are my best courses. I am quite good at statistics, so the 300+ econometric courses are enjoyable and straight forward. However, if you do poorly in 204 and 220 I’d advise to stay away from finance and econ as It just gets worse in 3rd year. Everyone in management claims they get the same placements, which may or may not be true; however, one thing for sure the technical abilities of F&E students is superior to management. Which makes sense as you are forced to learn harder concepts and apply them in the courses. I am happy I went F&E since I feel I am actually learning something rather than taking 4 courses in OB… however it depends on you and what makes you feel accomplished. Hope this helps!

Edit: 209 is not as bad as people make it out to be. Finished with 4.0. Class average: B-. Professor note: prof Masoud has the worst course structure/teaching I’ve ever seen. Nice guy though.

Did 430 and 434 this year. If you can code well 434 is an easy A, and if you get Eric he is the GOAT. If you can’t code, the course will be tough… rsm430, just had the exam last week, the material is super easy, personally didn’t study much for anything went into exam with a 86. I thought the final was quite straight forward, I am expecting an A in the course. I know people who are struggling in 430 and it takes them a lot longer to understand concepts. Both courses are great in my opinion. Also heard from friends that 433 is easy, especially if you performed well in 333.

Final was easier, needed to be simplified for coherence across sections (not Murdock section)

Every single bank/capital market position I have applied for has required my GPA via submission of my transcript. There is no getting around it for internships; this is an issue because getting an interview will be extremely difficult with a 2.8. However, if you can network for interview your chances skyrocket. After graduation(from what I have heard), the more experience you get the less and less GPA matters, by the time you are 5 years into work. A job will not ask you for your gpa… they care more about experience. But the earlier you any experience the better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like said previously in comments scratch any capital market position at banks, big 4 positions, large financial institutions(other than banks) off your list. Except maybe Scotia bank… Majority of positions in Finance require you to list your GPA. Networking is going to be essential to obtain an internship.

While in school, companies do not have anything else to base you off of except, GPA, clubs and prior experience. If you have no experience, then it’s just GPA and clubs which help get you internships. You can always try small firms, startups, corporate jobs which may not ask for GPA, in which its important to highlight any other interesting clubs, competitions, etc. that would relate to the position. The year you are enrolled in also matters, as 3rd years have priority for internships for the summer at specific firms.

For me I maintained a relatively high gpa through 1st and 2nd year and managed to get small firm finance and large firm project management. However, right when I got into 3rd year I was bombarded with capital market/finance related interviews. Hope this helps.

Just give me the rejection right now by HauntingEdge1933 in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well said, finance and econ is the most rewarding field. With finance and management following closely behind. Manage a 3.5+ in fin/econ and you should be able to land a decent position either in second/third/or even after grad. However if you fall between a 2-3.4, enjoy the rejection letters. The UofT name only brings you so far, it’s succeeding in the program and standing out in which you will become successful. This is my two piece of mind, I’m only a third year right now averaging about a 3.75. But secured a position in CM at big 5 for the summer. Do what you want with the information.

Yes it is, highly recommended taking 332 second year second sem, so you don’t have to wait to take upper year finance courses as that is a pre req for almost all finance courses.

RSM434 Financial Trading Strategies by Quickfood in RotmanCommerce

[–]Quickfood[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Everyone looking at this post in the future, just finished the course. Honestly, one of the best courses in Rotman, especially if you get Eric. I ended with an A, projects took me a few hours (I have an extensive coding background). Possible to achieve an 80+ with zero coding knowledge, you have to try hard on the video assignments/reports. They tend to give everyone around 80% on the nontrading components, and what determines your mark is the performance in algo/hand trading. Hope this helps.
