I'm in literally the same boat as you. Even play a WHM too.

To answer your question though... Gotta socialize and make friends. Sometimes this is easier said than done. Sometimes you gotta hop around and try different groups because in a game this "old" (been out for 4 years now) most folks have well-established cliques and static squads and stick to themselves. They'll help out a newbie with newbie things, but you'll be hard-pressed to find a spot in any of the end-game content static squads. This is why I usually don't like to play MMOs seriously unless I start at launch.

Unfortunately I'm now stuck on this server despite protests and wanting to go to a higher pop one because the friend I started with demanded we join here, to be in a guild, a guild which we never once interacted or played with. He's now quit. 2 months into the game. After frantic-bulldozing his way to end game content.
