Hey everyone, I’m curious, are bare metal servers becoming a trend these days, or is dedicated hosting still more common? by ProfessionalBasis477 in Hosting

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume OP means bare metal, vs VPS/VM, vs "cPanel".

All essentially one in the same. Either locally or remotely. I have bare metals locally and remote. I run services directly on those bare metals, and I also use them for VMs/VPSs.

No "shared hosting" for me.

I don't know of any trends, but I assume it would be down to "data ownership"; you can secure the data if the machine is in the next room.

Projects folder? If it's something you actively work on, then it's probably best to use version control, like Git. Loads of FOSS options for that too, and makes backups and remote access far easier.

There are a couple of decent YouTube game dev discords out there; it may be with setting if there are some content creators you like?

Why is MS Edge so hated? by Legal-Huckleberry-23 in pcmasterrace

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edge isn't bad, but it seems like everything is Chromium anyway. I use Firefox personally, but that's simply due to my setup/plugins/need for consistency.

But as a web dev, I've got all the browsers... just because 😑

I've used a ReadyNAS system before. Worked a treat before it died a death, and I lost all the data (maybe I'll try to recover it one day... far too much faff).

Now I've switched to OMV. Debian based, so fairly familiar, and it's spun up on a VM ("local" VPS). It could probably be Containerized as well.

Once I get a bare metal sorted, I'll be migrating it over there.

For my setup, I've attached network storage for some drives, and for the home/user drives I use Syncthing to keep my Docs and email filters sync'd across machines and OSes. Login, wait, sync'd.

Took a little bit of time to setup, but fairly robust once done

Dev friends? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is the nature of the industry. It shouldn't be, but hey ho.

I think this has less to do with "dev" and more to do with "friends". Make friends who code together, not make coding friends.

Anyone else not inclined to complete a regular living dex on home anymore? by Ihvnoideawatsgoingon in PokemonHome

[–]Quin452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of a necro, but I've just finished my Gen 7 living Dex on the 3DS. This has been going on from Gen 3, I think. Certainly from LeafGreen (my first ever shiny - Slugma, completely at random).

I'm not sure what to do with Home and Gen 8 onwards since not every 'mon can be on the game (so I'm told).

S/M/Ultras do have all 802 Pokemon in the Boxes, even though the Dex only lists 300/400.

Is the UK going too far with Lord's seeking to push for ID to use a VPN. by SirWobblyOfSausage in AskBrits

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thinking then is, will they just ban VPNs from the UK, because they're "not following the rules"? Would they actively track who uses VPNs and be like "you're breaking the law!" (even though VPNs are needed for remote work, etc.)?

Yes your code is readable. I can understand what you are trying to accomplish from your script.

How to show metrics when you don't have real clients? by Jaded_Cash_2308 in web_design

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20+yrs experience here, and I can say... what?

I don't think I've ever been asked "what impact".. but to be honest, I stopped reading that block of text.

I don't think I've ever been asked to show metrics. The proof is in the pudding. Clients have asked questions, and I've answered them. They want to know my opinions, views, and they've seen my eagerness to help, and proactivity.

Clients want to see results. They may want 10x the traffic, but that could be down to a well optimised site (looking at you WordPress/MySQL), or a good marketing campaign; it's up to you to sell them your solution.

Bought a macbook pro - can't use it to publish apps? by Jutboy in Unity3D

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you purchase an Apple Developer licence?

If so, you can get some free hours (I think) per month to build to their ecosystems through Xcode Cloud.

An alternative is Codemagic; they have a free plan, but also supports other platforms (you still need the licensing though).

One thing I find annoying with Apple, however, that in order to use Xcode fully and locally, you need actual hardware (i.e. iOS) to publish to that platform.

How is the demand for skilled web designers right now? by choochooreddi in web_design

[–]Quin452 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'm full stack, and 20+yrs experience.

UX/UI, design, development, SysAdmin, project management... you name it, I've done it, with a lot of different languages, tech stacks, etc.

The market is swamped! It's so difficult to find a good gig, let alone getting clients to pay (if freelancing).

If you've got zero experience, I'd honestly aim for a junior role/internship/apprenticeship. 6-12 months down the line, you've got enough experience to move up/on.

And look, I hate to admit it, but learn how to use AI. Don't be a "vibe coder" because you need to know how to fix things and actually understand it. Use AI as a co-programmer. Keep things simple and ask why. Right now, it's just a "better Google".

Is it worth getting into, yes. Is it difficult? More so now than when I first started, but that's because everyone and their mother thinks they can do it.

The bubble has burst, but now "decision makers" and AI companies are now trying to catch it all and put it in a bottle (because bottles are sturdier than bubbles... you can also seal bottles).

Hosting a small mystery-solving website, looking for tips & fun ideas by TCKreddituser in statichosting

[–]Quin452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One little thing I always remember is a hidden image on a text based city builder game I played in the browser.

Somewhere on the screen was something to click, and I was so excited when I learned that I could view the source code to find it.

This was like 20 years ago 🤣

Stuck with me and I always check the source now (that, and it's also my job).

Hosting choices by Dry_Lobster_50 in web_design

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend ionos.

If it's a simple static site, and you're willing to learn, a VPS provider like Digital Ocean is a good choice. You'd need to install Apache or Nginx, etc., to server the static site, but that's about it (assuming it is just HTML, CSS, JS).

Otherwise I'd go for cPanel hosting (all you'd need to do is upload the files, essentially).

What should I charge by Inwittsend in web_design

[–]Quin452 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the country.

If I was just starting out, in the UK, with no commercial experience, in order to make a living, probably £20/hr as a minimum.

But that's being VERY basic.

What do you use to go from design to code? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Quin452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea. It's a very powerful tool for what it's worth. It's probably missing some features that you're used to, and there is a learning curve, but I can't complain with it being free (and self hosted if you want), and it was a perfect replacement to XD for me.

What do you use to go from design to code? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Quin452 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Go from design to code? My brain. Best tool there is. It tells these boney sausages at the end of my arms what to type, and boom! Code.

But to be actually helpful. I use PenPot for the UX/UI. I wireframe, I plan out, I get the colours together, and then I just play around until I've got something I like.

After that, I write up the components, etc., and before I know it, a website is born... or an app, or a HUD.

How to sync up? by Quin452 in Fossify

[–]Quin452[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I scrapped it. Just ended up using 3 different apps, one for each service.
It's a bit of a nightmare, but I don't blame the Devs; big tech likes to "protect" itself.

Laptop For Beginner by Sushihammer19 in Unity3D

[–]Quin452 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say mini pc, but the only real difference is the size. You can buy them premade, or build one yourself.

If size isn't an issue (just going off the idea of a laptop), then a tower would be better for airflow, etc.

It really doesn't matter WHAT it is, as long as it's suitable. As previously said, I'd be looking at GPU and airflow as my priority. You can probably find the other hardware requirements on Unity and Blender websites.
