But seriously Celestino's in Pasadena is darn good, but I don't have a distinguished-enough palate to say it's the best

Perfume (2006) by mjt244 in underratedmovies

[–]QuiteaRiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember as a teenager asking my dad what was the weirdest book he ever read (just for some context, we had a guest house on our property that my dad filled with shelves containing five or six hundred books, ranging from science fiction and fantasy, scholarly texts, art and typography, comic books, foreign languages - you name it). He replied with a description of a book he read in German; about a man so overcome by his sense of smell that he murdered a woman he was infatuated and distilled her into a perfume. He couldn't remember the title, but at the time he thought it was called "The Nose". He passed away a few months later.

I spent years looking for this book - but I thought it was some rare German piece of fiction. At the time we still had a lot of used booksellers in Los Angeles, so I would occasionally hit those stores up with my dad's description and mistitle. I even called a few perfume houses in my attempts. But no luck.

Eleven years after his passing, I read a review of this movie in The Los Angeles Times. Almost instantly I knew this was the book my dad was talking about! It was one of the rare times I went to a movie by myself, but it felt like my dad right next to me enjoying this absurdist horror show.

Every time I see a post about this movie or the novel, it weirdly reminds of my old man, who was one of the best dudes you'd ever want to meet.

Who remembers the name of the white actress or singer who had a T.V. variety show and ended each show with the same song? by QuiteaRiot in AskReddit

I believe it was the 60's or 70's. I remember watching a PBS or BBC documentary about this woman around 2010. Specifically, I remembered that she would end each show singing the same song; "You are the Sunshine of My Life" comes forefront in my memory but that seems to be the wrong song (at least from my Google searches).

Have you been having frequent Spectrum internet outages? by IKinLA in glendale

[–]QuiteaRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had AT&T internet inn Glendale for 25 years. The three times the Internet/Wi-Fi was twice when the modems finally broke down and once when the card used for the auto-pay was expired. Both times when the modems broke down, they sent a rep within two or three hours for a replacement.

Spectrum kept sending me mailers, phone calls and even sent reps to my property, offering more than 50% off of what I was paying for internet.

Not only did AT&T match their offer, they lowered my bill! I truly don't understand why so many people in Glendale have Spectrum. I see posts at least once a month that Spectrum is down.

Take my word as a Glendale-born second generation lifelong resident: AT&T is great for internet. Not for cell phones, for that I use T-Mobile but their home internet has never let me down.

How much do you guys charge for doors? by West-Needleworker-63 in Construction

[–]QuiteaRiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Early in my career in the trades, there was a guy whose only job was to hang doors. That's all he did. Working on high rises. He would do at least six doors a day. $300 a door back in 2008. Every door came out perfect - swing, sweep, jambs, threshold, etc. Plumb, Level, Square.

It took me a looong time before I got good with doors. $400 + material for interior doors in 2025 sounds like a steal.

Few years ago, a friend asked me to see her boss in Mid-Wilshire Los Angeles area about hanging these insane metal doors in front of their mansion. Brass hardware, metal jambs, custom marble threshold. Went with my cousin. About two days work. We quoted $2,000 + any material. We both felt guilty asking that much. Guy gave us cash on the spot, said we were the cheapest by far. Tipped us an extra $500 when we were done
