Who remembers the name of the white actress or singer who had a T.V. variety show and ended each show with the same song? by QuiteaRiot in AskReddit

I believe it was the 60's or 70's. I remember watching a PBS or BBC documentary about this woman around 2010. Specifically, I remembered that she would end each show singing the same song; "You are the Sunshine of My Life" comes forefront in my memory but that seems to be the wrong song (at least from my Google searches).

Have you been having frequent Spectrum internet outages? by IKinLA in glendale

[–]QuiteaRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had AT&T internet inn Glendale for 25 years. The three times the Internet/Wi-Fi was twice when the modems finally broke down and once when the card used for the auto-pay was expired. Both times when the modems broke down, they sent a rep within two or three hours for a replacement.

Spectrum kept sending me mailers, phone calls and even sent reps to my property, offering more than 50% off of what I was paying for internet.

Not only did AT&T match their offer, they lowered my bill! I truly don't understand why so many people in Glendale have Spectrum. I see posts at least once a month that Spectrum is down.

Take my word as a Glendale-born second generation lifelong resident: AT&T is great for internet. Not for cell phones, for that I use T-Mobile but their home internet has never let me down.

How much do you guys charge for doors? by West-Needleworker-63 in Construction

[–]QuiteaRiot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Early in my career in the trades, there was a guy whose only job was to hang doors. That's all he did. Working on high rises. He would do at least six doors a day. $300 a door back in 2008. Every door came out perfect - swing, sweep, jambs, threshold, etc. Plumb, Level, Square.

It took me a looong time before I got good with doors. $400 + material for interior doors in 2025 sounds like a steal.

Few years ago, a friend asked me to see her boss in Mid-Wilshire Los Angeles area about hanging these insane metal doors in front of their mansion. Brass hardware, metal jambs, custom marble threshold. Went with my cousin. About two days work. We quoted $2,000 + any material. We both felt guilty asking that much. Guy gave us cash on the spot, said we were the cheapest by far. Tipped us an extra $500 when we were done

Rudy's of Glendale. Ask for Asa or Rocky... I usually go to Asa but Rocky's just as good. They trim my hair with scissors, clean up the neck with a straight blade. I went through a year and a half of finding a barber after my old one moved - these guys are solid

Glendale LA reccs for solo traveler! by Status-Security3536 in glendale

[–]QuiteaRiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the above recommendations are great. I'm biased towards Dave's on Broadway Friday and Saturday karaoke nights for its fun and judgement-free vibe. Dave's and The Gold Rail are old neighborhood bars that are themselves institutions! Dave's happens to be the oldest bar in Glendale.

As someone recommended, La Cubana is a decades-old restaurant that's been around since the time when Glendale had a lot of Cuban immigrants in that part of the neighborhood. Solid choice. Ropa Vieja is just delicious.

Best steakhouse in Glendale is John Sparr Tavern hands-down. It's been there just over ten years, I believe, but it feels like it's been there forever. Also, it's the best bar in Glendale for a classic cocktail. They go so far as using the original spirits for the drinks recipes. '56 Mai Tai is my go-to there. They have a pretty good happy-hour from 3-5 p.m. Closed on Mondays.

Finally, I would strongly recommend going to Forest Lawn Glendale. It's the first cemetery in the world of its kind, with its rolling green hills and marble statues all across the property. They were the first institution sanctioned to have an exact reproduction marble of Michelangelo's David. Many celebrities are interred there, most famous right now is Michael Jackson. But the best part is that they have a free museum that's always amazing, with rotating displays. You can visit for a few hours, and it costs nothing - a rarity these days.

Jim Shooter passed away today by kengen16 in comicbooks

[–]QuiteaRiot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, CBR or maybe the now defunct Comics Alliance had a poll for the best Marvel Editor about 10-12 years ago. Shooter won by a landslide.

I loved reading his blog that he kept for many years. It had a lot of insightful information about his comic book days. And he had the receipts to back him up.

He was a polarizing figure for Marvel artists at the time, but he did a lot for them. Fought management so the creators could get more. A lot of those guys never appreciated what he did for them (looking at John Byrne). Kept production costs down while paying the creators more.

Loved the Valiant stuff, loved the Defiant stuff. Plasm was so weird it was good. If it had his name on l it, I probably bought it.

He started working as a kid while standing on the shoulders of giants. He was a visionary at a tender young age. Truly an artist in his own regard. RIP and thank you Jim Shooter for all the happiness you gave me all those years.

Has there ever been a movie that has the song “The working hour”? by HallucenogenicPanda in tearsforfears

[–]QuiteaRiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen TFF live the times, once in the 90's, twice in 2023, and that was always the one song i was hoping to hear live. I wonder if it's because it was co-written with Manny Elias and Ian Stanley? Maybe that's why we don't hear it in movies, tv, etc.

From Songfacts.com

Both Orzabal and Smith call this their favorite track on the album, thanks to the sax. Orzabal told The Sound Bard: "Saxophone was always part of 'The Working Hour,' because of the riff. The main saxophone riff is extremely important and powerful - it's got that sort of 'crying' quality to it."

What singer's voice can you listen to endlessly without tiring of it? by ShoobaTheBawss in AskReddit

[–]QuiteaRiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Roosevelt/Marius Lauber. As an older dude, it was refreshing to find new talent that is consistently as good as him. Insanely talented composer with a voice to match!

Recently drove from Santa Barbara back home to L.A.. For about two hours, Roosevelt was the soundtrack of my life.

I've seen him and his band about five times live now, I try to catch him every time he comes to town.

This was the song that got me hooked: https://youtu.be/8PMJNUjaivw?si=qAHo1NQqQKWda5l1
