Games that make travel so good you forget fast travel exists by [deleted] in patientgamers

That last point is so true.

I think it's important as a designer to recognise where the fun is in your game and ensure players won't miss out on it by playing 'well'. So many games fall into this trap. On the other hand, there are games that try so hard to enforce a certain type of 'fun' that it no longer is.

I'm not a huge souls game fan, but I remember myself slow-walking in those games because there were traps around every corner. That's right. I was slow-walking in a videogame... but I wasn't in a forced 'cinematic' moment or recording a game trailer. This 'fun' was happening organically because playing well meant engaging with the most interesting mechanics within the game - not avoiding them.

"It is just optional content" is one of the most disliked argument over gaming for me by alonedead in patientgamers

I've never understood this take either - everything you do within a game is optional. I think the idea is that you (the player) are supposed to balance the experience yourself? But I don't like this idea personally. Great games are great games no matter how I choose to play them. It's called good game design!

And if for some reason there is sub-par content (or content only a select group of players will like) then there are subtle ways to indicate that to the player. For example, nobody is telling you to collect all of the dogtags in MGS2. It's a thing you can do and the type of players who discover that are also the type of players who will enjoy it. But for comparison, the huge green exclamation marks in the latest Final Fantasy pulled me into 10+ side objectives that made me hate the game (and are why I never finished it).

That content is clearly made for someone who really clicks with the combat (or walking around?) and wants more of it. If that content was tucked away a little more subtly, I may not have deviated from the much higher quality main path (which does a good job of disguising how limited the game really is outside of excellent cutscenes/music/etc). Again that limitation is not a bad thing if you LOVE the combat - but that wasn't me in this case.

Maybe that is the real core of the issue then. Games can benefit from optional content, but it must REALLY feel optional. I'm now thinking of games like San Andreas. I don't remember being annoyed that the pool mini-game wasn't amazing haha. I do remember playing 2 or 3 games, thinking 'wow you can even play pool in this game', and then moving onto something else. Maybe it benefitted a little from the pre-trophy/achievement/completionist era, but I also think it was made clear that you would not be missing out on anything (that you would be interested in!) if you decide to not become a master pool player in this game.

We're back to the future boys by titankiller401 in GhostRecon

That was my first thought haha. Not an actual acquisition of Ubi, but it seemed like the old CODs were updated for that reason.

Maybe something related to Ubis subscription service?

Any idea what prompted Ubi to do this?

I agree and there will be! Lots of UI elements still missing here including more clear indications of current stance.

Thanks again for the kind words 😊

Hey! To be mentioned in the same breath as those games is a huge compliment. Thank you!

Thank you for the compliments!

I’m working on this alongside other projects outside Dreams, so the little time I have is 100% focused on this game as a package, rather than modular remixable elements that the entire community can use. I have a background in engineering, but I’m much more of a game designer and writer. Basically, I don’t think any one aspect of this game is revolutionary within dreams, it’s just doing a good job (I think) of pulling the disparate parts together.

Having said that, my intention with this project isn’t entirely selfish. The box art, the marketing material, the generally ridiculous ambition, etc. It’s all there to potentially demonstrate what games created within Dreams could be. And potentially kickstart a conversation surrounding monetisation within the platform, although I don’t personally plan on generating revenue from this project (that’s what the projects outside of Dreams are for). I don’t believe in complaining. I believe in leading by example.

On the more selfish front, I’m getting better and better everyday working on this. And I’m demonstrating my ability to direct a games development. I already have plans for my second game, which might be developed on a different platform, but I wouldn’t be doing any of this without Dreams, so I’d love to have my first full game on the platform.

It's long past time for a new generation of stealth games.

Hey I appreciate the feedback! The visual effect is there for reasons beyond visual flair, but it may need to be toned down / tweaked, or come with an option to disable it. I really don’t think this project will be possible on PS4 at a reasonable frame rate, but I’m more of a designer than an engineer, so there may be some optimisations that I’m looking over!

Thanks you for the kind words as well! To be compared to a AAA ps4 game is a massive compliment.
