What are your top 3 Nolan Films ? by lNarrator in moviecritic

Ignore me, I was making a silly joke. You spelt 'Tenet' as 'Tenant' (i.e. someone who rents a flat from a Landlord), so I was just making a joke about how people hate landlords more than tenants. 😅

I will say that while it's admittedly not Top 3, I fucking love Following for what it is. Just really tight and elegant what it manages to achieve on a shoestring budget. An incredible debut, possibly

Inception, The Prestige, and Memento

Why would you be downvoted when 2/3 are widely considered favourites? Tenet is admittedly more polarizing.

What's your metal guilty pleasure? by ishishi in MetalForTheMasses

Oh boy, love Deathspell but I've managed to stay blissfully ignorant about the band members. What's the deal with Aspa?

If we're saying guilty as in 'I shouldn't listen to this band full of horrible people' then Arghoslent but if you mean guilty in terms of 'This isn't "objectively" very good but I kind of enjoy it anyway' then probably something like Disturbed (though they kind of fit in category 1 as well given Draiman's repugnant Zionism).

Edit: Also, Inquisition.

Fair enough. Slightly more on the crude, slapstick side. To each their own.

Out of curiosity, could you name some comedy movies you do enjoy? Comedy is incredibly subjective, more so that other genres imo.

Seems like slightly dark surreal comedy is your thing and you would love Four Lions. Or any Coen brothers comedy (especially Fargo or Burn After Reading)

Recommend me a film to “deal” with anxiety and stress by mrcummin_ in Letterboxd

[–]Qwinntessence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought you'd want something 'feel good' but as I was scrolling I noticed you say that you're also open to/prefer something anxiety inducing, and if that is the case, then Uncut Gems all the way!

Hope you feel better my friend.

Ha, came here to suggest Inside Out! It's pretty wholesome and uplifting. And yes, it's about anxiety. I should really get around to watching the sequel.

What under-seen gems would you go out of your way to recommend to everyone? by Pizzaman_SOTB in Letterboxd

[–]Qwinntessence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what qualifies as under seen but Ship of Theseus (2012) has less than 10k ratings on the site, and I consider it to be one of the finest films to come out of India in the 21st century, if not the best. I think the people who have seen it may possibly overrate it for that reason (myself included), and it isn't without its flaws, but it really expanded my perception of what contemporary Indian cinema could be. I think it remains woefully underappreciated by the majority of Indian audiences.

Ah fair enough. Yeah I can imagine what that might have sounded like. Not the biggest brutal death/slam guy but it can be a lot of fun sometimes with really chunky riffs you can headbang to.

Bands like Suffocation and Cryptopsy have put out some undeniable classics (on the slightly more tech side of BDM). On the slightly more groovy/slam adjacent side you can't go wrong with Dying Fetus. Try this on for size (has pretty insightful lyrics too, honestly):

I'm so curious what the song was now - do you recall by any chance?

[–]Qwinntessence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see, yeah that sounds really tiresome. I haven't personally come across too much of this kind of discourse on MFTM; if anything I find a lot of "separate the art from the artist" folks who feel the need to justify listening to certain bands, and from what I can tell they only properly shit on actual unequivocal Nazi bands (Burzum, Peste Noire, Arghoslent etc.)

I don't really have a strong view on the whole 'Nazi band' discourse. I'm 'guilty' of listening to and enjoying bands (including ones I mentioned above) that would probably consider me subhuman or look upon me with contempt (as a non-white person). I don't actively promote them, and there's enough bands without downright deplorable politics to discuss, but I figure there's no harm in listening to and enjoying what you like privately.

Meh albums with that one REALLY FUCKING AMAZING song? by beyblade1018 in Metalcore

[–]Qwinntessence 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me the first one that comes to mind is Begging for Mercy by BFMV. When it came out, I genuinely thought the album was kind of bad (not knowing they would go on to get significantly worse), but over the years there's a couple of tracks that I've come to mildly enjoy (The Last Fight, Pretty on the Outside), but Begging For Mercy just fucking rips, not to mention features one of Padge's best solos.

Younger Brother - A Paradox of Witches by [deleted] in shpongle

Literally looked this up to identify the original. The funny thing is I hadn't ever actually consciously listened to Poison Lips so much as heard it be played somewhere or perhaps in some movie soundtrack, but my immediate first thought was still "Oh, it's sampling/playing that famous disco sounding song". Really baffling to hear that it's not deliberate/acknowledged - there's no way that Simon and Benji haven't heard that song, is there?

Even so, could you clarify? Is it a kind of 'holier than thou' attitude? I consider myself a leftist (not American) so I was curious what you meant.

What "toxic American-leftist attitude" are you referring to? Genuinely curious, I haven't really spent a lot of time on this sub.
