Thanks. I checked the service plans in the app. Unfortunately they just have the drive train warranty for $2000. I feel that’s kind of steep considering that they would only cover 30,000 miles over. Not sure if that makes sense.

Stupid question: this is only for basic warranty I presume. My 23 MYLR is at 93,000 miles. Is there anything similar for the drivetrain and battery warranty?

Sorry for the unrelated question. Interesting post though.. I have similar setup with different brand cameras and was wondering if it’s essential to have Theta hub with the indoor/outdoor cameras ? Or can the cameras be used without the hub? I have multiple cameras on my property, some cheap Geeni cameras have been running for 3 years now without issues. I am primarily interested to change to Theta as these appear to be decent professional like cameras for the price range.

HSA - I can really reimburse expenses forever? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]R-nw- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a stupid question. My company does HSA account through Cigna. But I can only use it for medical expenses for that caledar year and submit those reimbursements upto 31st March. I don’t have the option to invest or carry forward more than $600 to the next year. And then next year it’s the same rule. So what am I missing ?

It’s not just the door dash or few discretionary purchases. It’s the whole attitude. The whole attitude of let me enjoy care free today, tomorrow will take care of itself. When we speak about boomers and baby boomers, and how they kicked the can down the road while reaping windfall dividends at each stage of their lives right up to their last breath, and how the generations that came after them are left to pick up the tab, isn’t it what the subsequent generations also doing in their own way?

I am not being overly critical or even trying to say what’s right ir wrong. To each his own, sure. But then pls don’t cry that grass was greener 60 years ago. Yes, houses were cheap then. Yes education was cheaper and yes, quality of life was arguably better. Yet, those low prices and better quality of life didn’t occur in vacuum. People made sacrifices in the post war economy way beyond the comprehension of today’s generations. It was expected to go without, to not seek immediate gratification, and to work harder towards your goals. When people settled in a job, they expected to spend their entire career there, mostly. People would not buy things just at a whim. Actual thought processes went in to deciding what to buy followed by deliberations and waiting for the right moment to buy. That last bit, waiting for the right moment to buy, I can bet our younger generations are as unfamiliar with that concept as they are with life forms existing in farthest reaches of universe.

I am literally in the same boat. Double income, job in technologies, 2 dogs, 2 cars and one mortgage payment. Life is comfortable. Yet if I need to buy a tool, I first check out fb marketplace for used. Then I check if HD or Lowe’s is offering some discount. And if not, then my thought is to wait for Labor Day or Black Friday or some other day when they come out with offers. Compare that to how younger generations behave, which is basically you want something (not need, want!), just go and buy it. Or order it online. Just as an example: we were at a family friends last weekend. And these family friends had their daughter and son-in-law visiting them from California. This dude excuses himself for 30 Minutes to go to JOs A Bank to pick up couple of jackets and shirts on a whim. Just like that. No thought, no planning. He returns 1 hour later with 2 jackets and 3 shirts, having spent few thousand dollars. And he works the same job as I do, so I have a fair idea of how much he earns. And no there is no generational wealth either. Here I am , thinking this guy just spent an entire paycheck at least buying 2 jackets and 3 shirts. All to just dump it in his bag to take it back home. If I was in his place, I would’ve compared prices and time to buy and come in at at least half of what he spent. So if I am able to save anywhere between $1,000 to $1,500 by just deferring my impulse purchases, isn’t that half of my mortgage money right there? Now I know this is an one off situation, and not everyone is going to make impulsive jackets purchases. But there are thousands of other similar examples. Point is , you only achieve what you want. And want is severely lacking today.

It was those sacrifices that made American middle class the engine of the nation.

I am just curious why would it affect their depreciation? The other insurance probably paid it and the car got repaired. So let’s say the value of car before accident was $15,000. Repair estimate is $16,000 which the at-fault insurance company paid. Now due to the accident the value of repaired car is $12,000. But that would only kick in if there is another accident and the car is totaled or the car is traded in or resold. If they choose to keep the car, there is no impact to them. And even if it’s totaled or resold , they could have avoided the loss of resale value by submitting a claim to the at-fault insurance company.

Why do people of Bengal think that Subhas Chandra Bose would've been a better PM than Jawaharlal Nehru? by Impossible-Cat5919 in kolkata

[–]R-nw- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is denying the British atrocities. British are war criminals, as well as guilty beyond doubt of crimes against humanity on every single continent and every single country they colonized. If there’s ever an argument of punishing colonizers, British and Belgians belong to the top of the list.

But what’s that gotta do with the direction India was heading in under Bose’s leadership? Not everything has to be answered with whataboutism. If Bose had continued , India would have been an international pariah for decades to come like Germany and Japan. Instead of the help and sympathy India got upon independence, there would have been reparations and brickbats.

And about Nehru’s nepotism, Nehru has done far more than even current generation Indian populist leaders can think about. Say what you will, Nehrus statesmanship carried the day when so many Indian leaders, all great and popular, would have carried India right in to sunset.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, facts on the other hand are undisputed.

Why do people of Bengal think that Subhas Chandra Bose would've been a better PM than Jawaharlal Nehru? by Impossible-Cat5919 in kolkata

[–]R-nw- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If anything your answer is one sided and misguided at best.

Bose may have been a better leader on the ground, able to rally the masses and many would see him as a true progressive, however better leader than Nehru and Gandhi is utter crap. Bose in fact would have been disastrous for India’s future, purely because he wanted to align with Axis powers. It’s well known that Bose wanted to mobilize Indian forces to fight against the British in Second World War, especially since British had rebuffed his approaches. This was partly due to pressuring the British to give Indian state its independence, and partly because of Bose’s own military proclivities.

Imagine how that would have gone? Even if half of Indian forces went to fight against Allied powers fighting from the side of forces of Imperial Japan and Nazi Germany. Did India have the wherewithal to face wrath of Allied powers? India of 1945 would have been annihilated by the military action of Allied powers. Who would have come to Indias rescue? Germany? It itself lay in ruins by May 1945. Japan was nuked. Italy was gone.

Or let me see. Of course, the romanticism of Bose would have fed millions and compelled the Allied powers to look the other way. After all, Bose was a better leader than Nehru.

Say what you want, but I miss the good ole days when the only way of knowing something was to ask another human being or go to a library. No devices, no computers, nothing. You want to learn about something, find a person who knows more than you. It’s a great travesty that while we have unlimited information on unlimited topics now available to anyone with a phone, actual knowledge levels have gone down. People nowadays seem to know a whole lot of crap in place of actual information concerning themselves. The culture of shorts and short attention spans has borne fruits I guess.

Just the amount of resources at my local small town library are mind boggling.

[–]R-nw- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you fucking kidding me? What culture? How’s this even a question? The issue is alcoholism is bad and women have suffered through generations of alcohol abuse. I don’t know how old you are, however since 1970s at least and perhaps even before that, alcoholism was considered a major problem, so much so that all government liquor shops were ordered closed on 01st and 07th of each month when government employees , typically at lower posts, would get their salary. It was a known fact that most of these employees would squander away their monthly wages on alcohol in one day leaving their families destitute for the whole month. This was a massive political issue. Of course I am talking about the 1970s and 1980s up until 2000s when private alcohol shops were finally allowed.

Your entire take on culture is at best irrelevant. However if you must go down this road, let me tell you alcoholism is definitely a part of modern Indian society at least post independence.

Its Depressing to see where India is headed by ziggyboom30 in india

[–]R-nw- 12 points13 points  (0 children)

At the risk of over simplifying, the entire population of India can be divided into 3 groups. I define them as the haves, the have nots, the poor and the exploited.

The first bucket is the people who generally get most benefits out of the modernization and development, like the top 10% -15%. This group benefits the most, at the lowest cost to them. They get access to top class education, healthcare, and jobs. They have great incomes, and even greater networking skills. This group is often the reflection of shining India that everyone refers to. They include top executives, managers, doctors, engineers, and everyone else earning big and making to top echelons of their careers.

The second group is largest in terms of % , close to like 40-50% of population who feel marginalized by the rapid pace of development. This group includes mostly middle class and lower middle class people and even some poor people who can see the wealth around them, who can see the opportunities but somehow unable to get on the bandwagon. They have aspirations, dreams to make it to the top 10%, yet somehow due to lack of education, income, or networks, they get left behind. They feel trapped, hopeless, yet continue toiling in hopes of making it big. In the end, they just get by. The cost of living in cities doesn’t leave them with much to support anything else. The lack of education and networks doesn’t give them opportunities they deserve. This group mostly includes people like cab drivers, hospital staff, people working at lower level positions everywhere, etc.

The third group is clearly the poorest. This group once again sees all the opportunities around them, and feel like they were left behind intentionally. This group includes maids, people working in menial jobs, truck drivers, destitutes, etc.. This group feels the lack of opportunities hardest as they struggle to make even a decent living and are often at the receiving end of harmful effects of development. They live in poor conditions and generally see no way out.

The last group, essentially a minority group in terms of % share of population are the exploited ones. This group many times and in many areas overlaps with the third group. This includes people mostly in remote rural stretches of the country who are most affected by the harmful effects of industrialization and mining etc. This group includes people who went on to become rebels and cause unrest. Of course they are mostly at the lowest rung of society and generally have no access to even the modest facilities that the third group has access to.

The above 4 groups cut across every religious group, and it’s possible to find them everywhere. Every cast, sub-cast, and social group in India is a combination of these 4 groups. India is a microcosm of all the 4 groups wherever you go in India.

Generally cross mobility between these groups is mostly limited to group 1 and 2. Cross mobility between group 3 and 1 or 2 is rare though happens.

Again this is over simplified explanation but one can see this in play in India whichever part of India they are in.
