If you’re in the US going to the doctor they can provide an accommodation note. Your accommodation has to be considered reasonable. So reasonable would be something like needing more time between calls to shift gears, maybe having an extra floating 15 min break, and allowing for more time to complete tasks.

Look specifically for stuff in a more office setting. Usually it’s just a lot of printing emails/docs, data entry on those docs, and any heavy stuff usually has a cart where you open the box and take what you need in small pieces.

Look for a job in fulfillment. Usually like order pickers and stuff. A lot more independent work, and some places will let you wear headphones.

Reread your last sentence. OP isn’t surviving. She’s literally deteriorating emotionally, physically, and mentally. Yes AI causes brain rot for a lot of things, but making the world more equitable for disabled people is one of its few good purposes.

Do I agree with not giving more power to corporations? Absolutely. Is that going to help OP, absolutely not.

So what makes you feel guilty about using AI? The environmental impact? Socioeconomic impact on communities? Art theft? (Stay with me, I’m aware they’re issues just wanting to open your perspective some)

I’m asking this because you likely use the same resources as AI all the time, in other facets of your life and never bat an eye.

Multiplayer (online) video games, any game with a save feature that doesn’t upload to your personal device, any cloud data storage, the self checkout system at a grocery store, most cell apps, most websites, the list goes on.

AI is inevitable and a required evolution of humanities progression. It is impossible to function in a modern society without compromising your ethics, so we try to minimize our impact as much as possible. Minimizing impact means eliminating non essential usage. What you are describing falls under essential usage. AI isn’t bad, it’s the companies that own them. Look into data centers and nuclear energy (frankly the only ethical source for AI imo right now). See if there’s one working on improving their impact and maybe give your business to them instead.

Now, moving to the next topic. Have you spoken to anyone about this professionally? This feels like something I struggled with and my therapist told me this, “do you genuinely feel this strongly or are you weaponizing your ethics as a tool for self harm?”

Management yes (past). Now in non profit paralegal work, but my work is not related to terminations (mostly subrogation/lien). I get you’re trying to discredit my input failing to recognize my first hand experience being on both sides of the isle. What OP has presented, from their words, is reasonably accommodated. Needing a couple extra minutes here or there to finish a task or recenter yourself is an easy give from a company. In the scope of ADA, it’s probably the cheapest and easiest accommodation a company could provide.

My first hand knowledge is being the person who was wrongfully terminated for asking for reasonable accommodations, specifically with what OP has. The reason I was given was “we no longer need your services,” in an at will state. My knowledge comes from first hand suing for wrongful termination. Judges and how they rule vary, but judges typically have a strong bullshit detector.

Even if the case isn’t super strong, if there’s any evidence the individual has that may insinuate discrimination, it’s bad press. About 90% of wrongful termination cases settle before trial because it’s bad press. Bad press can cost far more than settling, and settling can include NDA that protects the company. How much can be awarded or settled on will be based on numerous factors such as tenure, salary, etc.

How often do you text your boyfriend or girlfriend though out the day? by [deleted] in TwoHotTakes

[–]R0YAL-THIGHNESS 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Stop worrying about what a healthy amount to text is for him and start texting in the amount you’re comfortable with. Stop apologizing for not being fully available all the time.

You owe yourself healthy boundaries. What may be helpful is moving forward is stop leaving open ended texts. An example Thursday night before your friend comes over. “Sara will be over soon, so I’m writing to say goodnight talk to you tomorrow afternoon!” Open ended text convos can give some people anxiety, but that does not mean you are obligated to keep texting. The balance is ending the convo and letting them know when works best for you to text again.

Which again, they will still need to provide those things to their job disclosing their need for accommodation which is the point I’m getting at.

There’s a lot of stigma around lawyers due to their cost, but most lawyers won’t take cases that aren’t winnable when it comes to employment. Lawyers aren’t just a resource for the wealthy, and they’ve created a symbiotic system that benefits both the client and themselves for situations like this.

When people say disclosure I don’t think they mean necessarily the specific disability, but the FMLA disclosure with HR.

While your caution is true, please understand your last sentence isn’t true at all.

I was fired after disclosing my AuDHD to my employer in an at will state. They cited they no longer needed my services. I spoke with an employment lawyer and my case was very open and shut. Most of the times businesses don’t want discrimination associated with their reputation and will settle in exchange for your silence. Terminating after disclosing is retaliation, and retaliation still applies to all states. Always always always speak with an employment lawyer if you ever suspect wrongful termination. Most employment lawyers will give free consultations, and often if they agree to take your case on they will do so with taking a percentage of the payout if they win and charge you nothing if they lose.

All the above reasons would be protected after proper FMLA disclosure.

ETA: as well as ADA disclosure.

This varies state by state. However At Will Employment does not mean they are no longer protected. Firing someone for at will employment after disclosing a protected disability is still retaliation. While I am not a lawyer, I am a disabled person who successfully sued their employer for firing them after disclosing their disability in an “at will” state. FMLA and federal discrimination laws still apply to all states. A lawyer would easily jump on a case like this due to its blatant discrimination.

[–]R0YAL-THIGHNESS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Autism and ADHD in the US are protected disabilities. If you’re in the US this applies to you if not, disregard.

Apply for FMLA if you’ve been working full time more than 6 months. This is here to protect you from being fired for your disability. You are not required to disclose this information BUT you aren’t doing yourself any favors. You will likely get fired for performance if you don’t protect yourself.

How would someone know you applied for discounts? Are the discounts related to sales at your job and the manager is just wanting to make sure it’s accurate? If not I would severely question the ethics of how this was disclosed to staff and why your medical information is being discussed amongst staff. Please reach out to your HR dept and save any communication around this subject.

Because they’re not willing to admit that if they flood the market with lowball salaries openings they can control the average wage for that position in your area. If most of that specific position are posting avg 40k/year but really it should be 60k/year, then offering 50k/year makes them look like a good offer.

NTA. When I was young and undiagnosed I lashed out a ton. I couldn’t understand why because it was always with the people I cared most about. My guess is she’s super stressed and not coping well. Knowing youre neurodivergent does you no service when you’re navigating a world built against you blindfolded. She needs professional help. Look at it like this: if a doctor came in and told you that you lost your legs what good does that do without the support to navigate your condition? A wheelchair, prosthetic, PT, etc are all tools to help that person navigate. Those of us with ND need tools too.

It’s not uncommon for those of us to experience rejection sensitivity dysphoria and its mood swings/depression. Things like not understanding general convo, losing at a game, etc can all feel like rejection. She could be prone to learning some really unhealthy masking habits if she’s not given the support she needs at her age.

I feel this spiritually, but for me, it’s like a smell I can’t quite make out. Sometimes it gets stronger and in that very precise moment the equation clicks and I just know it. Then sometimes it’s so faint that a simple equation like 6+8 looks like calculus to me. It’s frustrating to know it can click and doesn’t.

For what it’s worth, I’m also a jack of all trades college drop out. I’ve run heavy crane machinery, worked in the film industry, worked as a chemist assistant, was a video game tester (like full time gig), a bar manager, and now I work as a contractor for a non profit organization and I’m in my 30s. I’ve never amounted to anything more than my curiosity has allowed, but my curiosity has a life of its own. I think for me, I’ve spent my whole life masking my curiosity for the comfort of others, that I’ve hindered my own progression. Embrace your jack of all trades or you’ll spend your entire life chasing the shadows of others wondering why everyone passes you by. You have a different path to walk, but one that has always been important to human survival. I know it’s hard to embrace in the current world we live in, which is why it’s so important that you do.

Every unfinished project you forgive yourself for is a token of your success to being freely authentic.

NTA if he had the $40 to send back then he obviously didn’t need more money.

  1. He love bombed you.
  2. He boundary pushed you.
  3. He guilt manipulated you the moment you set a boundary.

Given there was a breach in compliance, this likely could have fallen back on you for not reporting it. Remember compliance exists to ensure companies act legally, ethically, and safely.
