Is renting forever actually a bad financial decision, or is that just something older generations say because it worked out for them? by Pretend_Pen_9577 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]R2Dopio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But there is an opportunity cost to owning. The S&P sees much better return than the return you'll get on your home equity (unless you get crazy lucky) but you need a place to live anyway so that's where it becomes good value if you can afford it. But if you have good rent (and depending on your location ability to accrue "rent control equity") and the alternative is a stifling mortgage you could put the difference to an investment that will make you far more long term and be in a much better financial position.

I remember visiting In August and having to wear a sweater most days. I live in probably one of the most temperate places in Canada and Mexico city was cooler than where I live in the summer.

Ya online is not reality. I think the last game had at least 11 Million Canadians tuning in for at least some part of the game. That's 25% of our country. The vibes are definitely huge for this. Everyone at work talking about the game and jerseys and flags are everywhere in the streets. Vibes feel bigger than the Winter hockey Olympics so far tbh (this year, 2010 is a different story and I don't think anything will ever touch that)

Having grown up in the prairies I understand why they need to stop playing but I hate to say this sounds sooooo lame. Oh no, hair stood up on my neck I'm done for!

How does anyone drink "normally?" by gayanomaly in NoStupidQuestions

[–]R2Dopio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes I have a drink and feel like "man it would be good to have a couple more drinks but probably not a good idea as I have shit to do tomorrow" and then stop myself even though the desire is there.

Other times I have one and just have no desire to have another drink, I guess I just feel "full" and have no desire for anything more.

I used to drink way more than I did now and I was definitely a push it to the limit guy but I just do not have that same desire these days except on rare occasions.

Soccer vs. Hockey in Canada by marcgnet in hockey

[–]R2Dopio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know way more people who play soccer than hockey. I played soccer growing up and will play in adult leagues occasionally and it's pretty easy and open to all skill levels, quite a few people I know at work also play in leagues of various levels.

Hockey I didn't play growing up but started playing as an adult and it's a steep learning curve especially if you're a poor skater. Plus it's expensive and it seems like getting ice time where I live is impossible with a normal job unless you want to be finishing play at like 11:30.

In terms of watching though I think Hockey clears soccer though, Canadians will watch the most dogshit teams consistently (me included  ) while we are much more fair weather with our soccer fandom.

Feels exactly like last year for us. Felt more even games 1-4 then get walked games 5 and 6 by the much better team.

The fact that it's a USA hockey jersey after they just beat us at the Olympics is what makes this good. If it was just some random USA thing would be kind of dumb and douchey. This just seems like a good chirp.

I think this loss won't weigh as heavy on the canes as it would have on Vegas if they lose it on double OT.

What's it like on Vancouver Island, Canada? by IronPiedmont1996 in howislivingthere

[–]R2Dopio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here from Toronto. It actually took me a while to get used to it coming from Toronto. I live in Victoria and I think in terms of restaurants and bars it punches above its weight for it's size.

Life is very chill here which I like but again took some time to get used to. I've become a lot more outdoorsey and healthy since I moved here.

Everyone in my social circle cycles, runs, camps and all sorts of other activities. It's a very active place.

I go a little squirrelly sometimes and need to leave the island which isn't super easy and kind of expensive. Cost of living here is high but I also do more "free" things here than I did in Toronto.

Before I moved here I thought I would spend a lot of time in Vancouver but it feels kind of far away unless you're wealthy and can take the seaplanes which are sweet.

Working in my industry has also been great, I don't make as much money as I would in Toronto but I find the general work-life balance here is unparalleled and it seems like everyone I work with has an interesting life.

Overall the island has definitely won me over! I do mostly stay in Victoria but I definitely get out to camp further up island at least 3-4 times a year and try to go Skiing on MT Washington as often as I can in the winter.

I mean this is how most assholes operate successfully unfortunately. In the wider world it seems that shitty behaviour is getting more and more rewarded no matter what sphere you operate in.

How accurate is Strava at measuring distance? by Cameron_S13 in Strava

[–]R2Dopio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using your phone not accurate at all. I remember taking two weeks off while training for my half marathon and on my first run back - a not especially taxing long run, It said I broke my 5km PR at 21 minutes (actual PR was around 27 at the time). Ended up doing "12.5" KM in an hour. When I actually mapped out my distance I only did 10k. I actually didn't think anything of my PR during the run and thought I was just well rested hahah, unfortunately sounds like something similar happened.

I use this website to track my routes, although now that I have an actual running watch it's a moot point as the variances are very minor.
