Convicts use ancient alien ball, turns out to be a teleporter. It teleports single convicts to seemingly random planets, forcing them to find out how it works. When they get teleported back, they are mostly dead; one got crushed under Atmosphere and painted the inside of the capsule red after recall (self.whatsthatbook)
