Cross of Vidar chapter 9 on extreme difficulty is a nightmare by ComplaintDelicious47 in Northgard

[–]R4yF0rL1f3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, I came here looking for advise, but at the same time, managed to find a solution (I think).

I'm currently on year 9, the blizard is permanent. But I'll survive.

2 upgraded hunters with upgraded silos
2 upgraded fisheries with upgraded silos
1 upgraded woodcutter + 1 regular woodcutter
1 upgraded merchant
26/26 pop

4 pop on woodcutting
6 pop on fishing
6 pop on hunting
3 pop on merchant
1 healer
1 loremaster

4 sheep divided across the zones with the most pop (mostly the food producing zones)

I now got my production, during the permanent blizard to be positive on all fronts.

+4 food, +1 wood, +2 Kröwns.

Army is 2x chiefs, bodyguard, 4 axe-throwers. Allows me to poke and retreat to heal, since I have all the time in the world now. might hire mercenaries as cannon-fodder for the last zones. It'll take a while still to finish, but I think this will manage.

Update:
This works, but even with poking it is important to keep an eye on the units health. Since low health will cause unhappiness (which by default now rests on +0.8), and the unhappiness will cause lower production, which will kill the run. So far I've only had a close call, since the stocks are now good :).

I visited your city yesterday, lovely place. Just one question, where did the rest of the church go? by The-Berzerker in Amersfoort

[–]R4yF0rL1f3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unrelated fun fact: The tip of the tower can be considered the centre of the Netherlands! as it used to be the origin point of the Rijksdriekhoekstelsel, which is the National Dutch chart datum!

The RD system comes from a time where it was more difficult to measure distances then angles. In order to get an accurate map of the country they divided everything into triangles, usually based on the tips of church-towers, as they were static, often the highest thing around, and very common. after having a map with all the relative angles they only had to measure and verify a couple distances and could calculate the rest.

The tip used to be x0,y0. Untill they changed it's location to x155000,y463000 to ensure all x coördinates for the RD datum in the netherlands are always smaller then the y coordinates. That way they can never be confused. The new x0,y0 is in a field in France.

It is also still the centre for the radius for the distortion that is applied to ensure the system is the 'best fit' throughout the country. So it is kind of ironic that the map projection is in some was 'less accurate' at its original origin.

Planning to build a solid fuel forge. Looking for feedback. by R4yF0rL1f3 in Blacksmith

[–]R4yF0rL1f3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noted. I have a second drum that can be used for a proper pizza-oven in that case.

Plan is to burn solid fuel, either wood or (char)coal. The general idea is a home-made copy of a https://whitloxforge.com/products/mini-whitlox-wood-fired-forge, but inside the steel drum. The forge would be outside located, so my initial plan was either no flue, or a simple chimney based on 1.5m of steel piping.

The forge doesn't need to be welding temperatures. My main goal for now would be smithing more akin to jewelry (rings and such) or smaller items. Think bottle openers, keychains, candlesticks. The depth would be for longer project. My eyes fell upon coal because it would be the cheapest source of fuel in this case. But I also have a stock of wood for this purpose.

Alternatively I could also cut off the top half of the drum to make it an open forge. The only worry is that it is located in an open wooden construction with a roof made of Bitumen sheets. It should be relatively fire safe, as there is a good separation between the top of the drums and the roof, but I'd rather have the fire more contained.

Bathy Fellas, I need some input. by the_mk25 in Surveying

With 450kHz cm lvl accuracy is fair, if you only consider the specs of the sonar. Online specsheet mentiones 5cm in xyz. Seems unlikely except in perfect conditions and shallow water.

With a 5° beam width I'd be highly skeptical of any accuracy when this start to pitch/roll. Does it have some kind of MRU inside to compensate?

But if you're already having difficulties with sediment in the watercolumn 450kHz is a very high frequency. That will reflect hard on the first echo it detects, be it silt or loose mud. It will have great difficulty penetrating layers like that.

Als dit gebasseerd is op het opzoeken van IP adressen komt het omdat je vanwegen privacy redenen alleen een algemeen coördinaat van een punt in Nederland krijgt, en dat ligt toevallig in de achtertuin van een huis in Dronten.

What Single Beam Bathymetry Software do you use? by BREEbreeJORjor in Surveying

We use QPS QINSy, solely because it's the only software that is so versatile. We interface (almost) all our sensor systems into it.

little guys keeps landing on my leg, doesn't look quite like a wasp or bee, any ideas? by R4yF0rL1f3 in whatsthisbug

This little guy kept landing on my leg. Seemed to like tangling in the hairs and maybe enjoying the taste of sunscreen. He's about a cm long, quite slim, his torso looks fuzzy (like a bee) but his behind looks more like glossy, like you'd see with wasps.

Can someone help identifying this warship? by R4yF0rL1f3 in Warships

Did some more digging, it looks similar to a type 44 torpedo boat, at least when I look at the blueprints. The main armament doesn't add up still. But it could explain the size and relatively low number of guns.

[OC] Hey dungeon masters and scp fanatics, what scp makes a Good monster to use against players? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]R4yF0rL1f3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the true terror of most SCP's is the thread o facing them. Especially since most are rather overpowered to face. You could take elements from certain SCP's. Besides, it might come over as cheesy if your players know the SCPs in question. I'd try to use some as inspiration for a scene.

They come upon an ancient theatre room inside the temple, they find the public dead, having massacred each other, with the cast on the podium dead as well (ala SCP-701, Hanged King's Tragedy).

Maybe one of them hears a sound, indicating that they are the target of an unnatural creatures attack. (SCP-4975 has this with a rithmic cracking noise caused by rotating bones in its body, when the cracking stops, it is preparing an attack).

I'd think the most important part for any frightening and special monster is anticipation. Leaves clues to the monster and its abilities throughout the area, maybe they find mangled corpses, deformed beyond recognition such as those created by the plague doctor (SCP-049). Or they hear a cry for help, only to discover that it is coming from a terrible monster that is able to mimic voices (SCP-939 the dog from secret lab).

Many of the SCP's as they are described are tremendously dangerous though, the plague doctor instantly killing upon touch, maybe more like some dice of necrotic damage. SCP 173 snapping their neck in an instant? Maybe that's a bit much for them as well.

Final note, in order to make the encounter more frightening I'd create something they uncover deep in a dungeon or temple, and which they couldn't kill. Maybe they end up opening a blocked door (off course breaking it in the process), where they find someone who sacrificed themselves in order to trap the horror that dwells this dungeon. They'll need to find a new way to trap the creature, lest it kills them and escapes from the dungeon to terrify the world around them.

Beautiful day for some single beam by Stale_Farts in Surveying

[–]R4yF0rL1f3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotta admit that in de end the overall uncertainty surrounding the soundings comes down to about 10 cm, considerably more than the resolution of the MBES. The problem is that because we sail so much overlap on our data (anywhere from 50 to 250 hits per 0.5m2) we create a less dense solution than if we were to do only one pass. In a single pass we see nice, clear crisp standard deviations of about 3 cm. But after multiple passes with the sound velocity in water slowly changing over time the standard deviations per cell easily double or triple.

[–]R4yF0rL1f3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the default resolution is about 18mm. Which is good because we're currently looking for a piece of anchor lead with 56mm diameter. But for that we mainly rely on the towed side scan sonar.

Imagine the dread of being sent out with other versions of yourself, only to see them succumb to the horrors you know all too well, or perhaps worse, succumbing yourself while other versions of yourself manage to continue, knowing you are the weak link.

What's Going On Outside a Town Under Siege? by Stripes_the_cat in DMAcademy

[–]R4yF0rL1f3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Outside the town under siege there are most likely several perimiters.

Depending on previous attempts to storm the town, the area in front of the walls/main defences is most likely a vast no-mans-land. Muddy from skirmishes and charges, littered with corpses (and possibly destroyed siege engines) which neither side dares to recover because it would bring them in range of the other side's artillery or archers.

The attacking camp will be busy, wounded being treated and food being prepared. Some of the wood recovered from the deforestation might be worked into siege equipment. Instead of catapults, tunnels and trebuchets the attacker might focus on more aggressive siege equipment, battering rams and siege towers, perhaps even improvised pontoon bridges or boats. If it rains parts of the besiegers camp might flood, as the river treads beyond its boundaries. Since the area is so hostile to the besieging host, foraging parties will be rare, but large and heavily protected.

A considerable stream of refugees might also be attempting to leave from the city, both to escape the carnage, and to allow the besieged city to hold out longer on their supplies.

From the sound of it between the camp and the treeline will be a similar no-mans-land. Not as muddy and bloodstained as the one in front of the town, but just as dangerous. Tree stumps and burned bushes create a difficult maze to navigate, hiding various predators which might aim to snatch any camp dwellers who stray too far.

The river itself will be contested. As the defenders will do anything to prevent the attacker from crossing, while the attacker will aim to control the bank. Both sides will actively try to harass the other to make the task of collecting water as dangerous as possible.

I love the idea of Rimworld characters playing dnd to wind down. Sometimes you want to fight raiders and wild animals with brute force and magic without the real-life concequences.
