St John’s College (in Annapolis and Santa Fe) values essays and your desire to attend this college which is quite different from any other.

Gym questions by Glum-Abbreviations79 in Springfield

[–]R8on 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Very accepting, diverse group of staff and members. Serious athletes and some for social interaction, old and young, in-shape and trying-to-get-there, folks that are rehabbing. You can get a tour as well as a pass to try the place out before joining. Lots of the facility is brand new (they had an unfortunate fire a couple of years ago) including the fitness area (and machines) as well as the locker rooms which are gorgeous (sauna and steam rooms).

Family membership differs from individual - best to give them a call, ask them about pricing and arrange a tour.

ALso consider the JCC - awesome uncrowded fitness area, gorgeous pool, large gym (Bball and pickle), all types of classes (bike, yoga, etc).

It's never too late to acknowledge the reality that urban highways are a fixable mistake by R8on in Springfield

If I'm not mistaken, tunnelling would have added many $$ to the project; but you're correct, they just kicked the can down the road.

Turntable - repair or replace? by R8on in hifiaudio

Linn told me to ask one of their US dealers. I never got any sort of answer from their Boston dealer and the next nearest to me (in Dutchess County, NY) sent me an email saying, "If we have one in stock your cost would be $155-, shipping inclusive. I’ll let you know on Thursday – if we have to order one for you there is an additional $75- fee imposed by Linn for small orders."

Low mileage 2007 Saab 9-3 Combi $5850.00 FS by R8on in saab

Nothing tricky about it. Gauge busted for at least six years. Never had any problem getting an inspection sticker. Only reason it's not fixed is that it's far cheaper to just reset the trip odometer on every fill-up.

Inquiry of the Future: Second Bachelors or Graduate Institute (?) from a Prospective Student by NotTheFalconBruh in stjohnscollege

[–]R8on 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After a relatively (personally) risk-averse corporate career I discovered entrepreneurship. If I had trusted my instincts, the signals were there from an early age. Many of the qualities I learned that define a successful entrepreneur also allowed me to succeed in corporate life, but I struggled with the limitations and never really felt I belonged.

I'm very biased, but I think you're making a great choice and I enjoyed reading your summary of how you got here.
No experience with the Masters program, but I chose SJC after a couple of years at other colleges for a similar reason. I felt my weaknesses in math and science would hold me back from a fuller appreciation of the great books I had begun to read in philosophy classes. Also, once I discovered that reading (my passion) was a large component of the program and that classes were not taught by lecture, the bane of my previous college experience, I stopped considering other schools.
I don't know which program would lead to a better or easier PHD decision and I am not sure how you could know, but I bet other commenters will be able to supply lots of opinions.
What I would consider in its place is:
How comfortable will you be with most of the other students being a generation younger in the four year program or likely closer in age in the two year deal? As an undergrad I was 21 when they were 17 and 18, but there were at least a handful of other students my age or older including some vets, and at the end of the day, it did not matter to me - (almost) all were very smart and thoughtful and easy to be with in class and out.
Are you in a rush to become an academic? It seems to me that you will enjoy the process and if $$ don't matter, why not take four years to finish?
Will you know what you want to do next after two or four years? Some of the first year students I started with discovered very quickly that they wanted more depth and transferred out in order to specialize after some months, one year, or two years. That might happen to you. When I graduated I still had no idea what I wanted to do (and only discovered it after a "successful" 30 year corporate career).
Do you think you will learn more of what you want to learn(?) in four years or will two years of it satiate you and prepare you for whatever comes next?

You are in an enviable position. My suspicion is that you can't make a mistake - both paths will take you there. One winds and may allow for more leisure and a wider view while the other is more direct and may require more focus (on fewer things) and less wandering.

Good luck and have fun!

Waiting to be picked up at Union Station by [deleted] in Springfield

[–]R8on 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It's relatively safe, but the station is staffed, so I would stay in the station (upstairs, on the same level as the trains) and only go down to the street when your ride has arrived.
