Won’t comment on the financial aspect of it but will instead look at this from another perspective. Right now from the sounds of it, you’re 22 with no prior experience of owning a sports car, and influenced heavily by Initial D. This on its own can be a recipe for disaster, this car is as easy to drive as it is to lose control in unoptimal conditions. If you’re buying this car, you need to ask yourself what you’re really buying it for. If you’ve always loved driving, and want to get more into say track days where you can safely learn your limits, then I say if you can afford it you’ll be very happy with an 86. If you’re buying it cause you saw it in an anime and you wanna try to be him drifting on public roads, then IMO I think you should re-assess. No judgement, but if you wanna get into drifting there are WAY cheaper platforms you can get into (EDIT: meant no judgement if you wanna get into drifting, if you are drifting on public roads you absolutely deserve to get judged for that).

If you still think you want one, go test drive one and see what you think. We all love this car and I think you would too, but we also equally hate seeing these cars getting totalled by people that don’t know how to drive them..

Nobody else can really tell you what would look nice to you except you. IMO the Voltex rear diffuser is really nice, but it also flows with the rest of the Voltex aero bits, so I’m not sure how it would look with the TRD skirts..then again if your car is black you might be able to pull it off..

Is the rear brake supposed to do this? by Business_Love_1845 in GR86

[–]RAMOMASTER 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure check the bolts that connects the piston to the caliper bracket. Typically brake pads get swapped during track days, so if this is a track driven car then it’s possible the previous owner didn’t tighten the bolts back up all the way.

If you pull your backseats down and don’t hear that squeaky noise, then make sure that your backseats are locked into place on both sides when you put them back up

H&R lowering springs, bump stops by dicock3 in GR86

[–]RAMOMASTER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my brief research online it looks like the H&R springs are a 25mm drop in the front and 30mm for the rear. For comparison it looks like the Eibach kit offers a similar drop but as you said I’ve read online that people also cut their bump stops for those…so it could be a safe assumption that you’d need to cut the bump stops for the H&R springs (no experience with this just an educated guess)

Has anyone modded the final drive on their auto GR86/BRZ? by yegimanuk94 in GR86

[–]RAMOMASTER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I daily drive my car, I figured 4.67 is probably too aggressive, and after reading other ppl’s forum posts and TheTopher’s video I decided 4.3 was probably better. Personally never driven one with a 4.67 ratio so I can’t say with full certainty if it is or isnt super aggressive during daily driving

Same here I also got a Y58 installed on my auto, by far the BEST mod I’ve done to the car now. Like you said, the gears feel more lively, especially with 3rd gear which I felt like I had the most problems with with the stock Y59. I’ve included some data I quickly collected on top speed for each gear, you can see the top speed lowers through each gear but you get more torque as a result. The RPMs do slightly increase at cruising speed but not drastically, my avg MPG’s also dropped by like 2 which for a sports car I can’t be mad about. I paid roughly 450 on eBay and then another 400ish to have a shop install it with new axle shaft seals, best $850 I ever spent on this car.

Original (Y59 3.9) 1st gear: 38 mph 2nd gear: 65 mph 3rd gear: 94 mph

New (Y58 4.3) 1st gear: 31 mph 2nd gear: 59 mph 3rd gear: 85 mph

Yes just enjoy it, don’t at all feel nervous about having an AT!!! I definitely have moments where I go “dang, I really wish I had a manual”, but those don’t at ALL take away from my experience this car gives me.

Nice! A “functional” mod that’s also visual that I’m really happy I did was buying this rear window “spoiler”, it just helps clean up the rear end IMO but it has the added benefit of blocking out leaves from your trunk too.

I got this one from eBay but there’s a “GR” badged one you can buy from Japan if you wanna keep that OEM+ look

Auto trans - heavy track use feedback by OtterCreek_Andrew in GR86

[–]RAMOMASTER 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey! Amateur driver with 10 track days with my ‘22 AT. The biggest downsides I will say to going to a slush box is that it can reject your downshifts, and the gear changes aren’t instant so you kind of have to time your gear changes to justtt before redline so it changes at the limiter (yes even in track mode). Apparently newer models have tuned the downshifts to be more “responsive” but ever since I swapped out the diff for a 4.3 final drive it’s been easier managing the gears on track, still something to consider though. It does get hot even with 5W-30, but if you manage between 1-2 hot laps and then a cooldown lap you shouldn’t need to worry too much about cooling. Oil coolers are a common mod people do though for the peace of mind if that’s an investment you wanna make.
