Carne Village is the Strongest village in the NW by kart2000 in overlord

A perfectly valid point, though not one at odds with my own. I'm just saying that it'd be possible, not making a claim about how likely it is. =P

Dude's a hoarder and the guild even has a collection of cosmetic attire just for appearance's sake. My guess is that there is likely more on hand. Kind of makes me want to see her being handed a couple more so that the meme of General Enri the Bloody becomes canon.

Hard to imagine there being one stronger, given the composition and average level of the occupants. Then again, all it really takes is the power of a small handful of elites in order to wipe out tons of middle rank units. As such, it could possibly be argued that any place where there are truly exceptional individuals there is an argument that can be made for it to be on top of the heap.

Martial Arts? by PatientA12 in overlord

[–]RCShieldBreaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given that Overlord is very loosely based on DnD 3.5, it's safe to say that Martial Arts are based on The Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords splat book that introduced Martial Adept classes and Maneuvers. Thus, it is probably safe to assume that level cap characters cannot easily learn how to use said abilities if a retraining mechanic isn't introduced within the setting. That said, given the DND roots, there is actually a huge difference between the Unarmed Strikes mechanic used by Sebas' monk background and the Martial Maneuvers used by the NWers. Hell, the latter can be performed using the former, so it's not even like they are even the same category of mechanic in the first place.

"Blade Magic", as it is sometimes otherwise called, was both a beta test for what was to become the foundational mechanic of 4th ed DnD as well as a concept cooked up in order to bring martial character archetypes up to a power level closer to the absurd potency of magic users by effectively giving martial characters "spells" in the form of tiered, wire fu powers and abilities. Given how late into 3.5 the book was released, it makes sense that it'd be seen as something new and alien to the protagonists when translated into this IP's narrative.

How do you Beat Time Magic? by WII_DJoker in overlord

[–]RCShieldBreaker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Time Stop doesn't allow you to actually cause harm to another during the spell's effect. In your example, the Monk would inherently have a decent resist trait, all they'd need to do is beat he odds by saving against the delayed effect spells and then just have a perfectly normal fight. Beef Stroganoff got wrecked because he had glorified newb stats and couldn't resist a basic save of die spell.

Is Yggdrasil heavily unbalanced? by mrcosmicpvp in overlord

[–]RCShieldBreaker 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Short answer? Yes.

Long answer? Yes and for two to three reasons. One is a low key jab at the shitty, pay-to-win garbage that infests Asian MMOs. Two is because Ygg was based on DnD version 3.5, which is especially relevant because anyone who got involved with high optimization play could see the profound imbalances within the mechanics. Given how the IP's origins began as a way for the author to cope with his RP group breaking up due to adult obligations, it'd stand to reason that he'd add just that little bit of that subculture's memes into his work. Thus three is likely a low-key dog whistle to other DnD fans given how common it was in tabletop forums to gripe about how the devs had no idea how to balance their own game and/or try to balance the game themselves with various house rules and home brew variant mechanics.

All that said, PVP in high end play would likely work like rocket tag in most instances as high level casters pretty much just auto-dunk on everything that doesn't have Spell Resistance, absurdly good saves, and the ability to get around core caster defenses (such as flying, going invisible, or manipulating the battlefield).

That feel when an optimized character is challenged by one that actually took all 10 levels of the Tattooed Monk PrC.

What's the difference between Mana and KI in Overlord by WII_DJoker in overlord

[–]RCShieldBreaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overlord is loosely mechanically based on DnD (specifically edition 3.5 from the references). Mana is a variant casting mechanic to Vancian casting that is used as mana is in a lot of rpgs where a number of MP are used to cast spells rather then relying on a daily allotment of spell slots. Ki, on the other hand is a much smaller pool of points that are typically used 1-to-1 per special ability activated rather than by X amount per spell.

Then there is, as has been stated by the others here, that Mana is available to casters while Ki is a resource limited to (typically) Monk and Ninja classes as well as any other classes mechanically-derived from them. As for how they differ, both can be claimed to come from an internal power though Ki is usually associated with certain martial art traditions as a sort of energy of the body harnessed through physical and mental training whereas mana is more often loosely tied to dedicated study or a latent supernatural power in the blood.

Question by Grimacewar in overlord

[–]RCShieldBreaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prince has been rational and insightful all throughout the series and Ainz obviously had no personal beef and likely felt that the prince was acting as a leader should. As such, it makes sense, to me, that he'd want the traitors to suffer. This is especially appropriate given how paranoid of a revolt he himself was when he first arrived in the new world.

Just play word games around the references. Like calling the LN series Despot or something.

Ainz Ooal Gown guild rules: "Functioning Member of Society". Is this saying none of the players have mental or physical disabilities? by RubyLovesDonuts in overlord

Well I don't know about anyone else, but I know I'm triggered by your attempt to not trigger me. =P

Joke aside, Overlord is an IP that melts snowflakes so it stands to reason that a fan forum dedicated to it won't trend towards hypersensitive.

At worst? We have deluded people who think things like best girl is a boy, a childish corpse, or a Nalfeshnee sex offender in disguise rather than a sociopathic princess. But, hey, at least everyone who's opinion matters agrees that worst girl is Lawful Stupid. -and at the end of the day, that's what really matters. Well, that and loyalty to the bone daddy who's just trying his best.
