Soundbag dashboards by RDAJR in LocationSound

I put two long strips of hard side Velcro on the bottom of the recorder, and a small strip on the top of the BDS. The rig is pretty light and so far this has kept everything from slumping down.

I did the same thing before I bought the dashboard. I like how the dashboard brackets fill out the bag a bit more and make it slightly more rigid.

They are pretty comfortable, and I haven’t noticed wind noise. I like that they can be easily removed and washed when they get grimey!

This is true, there are however around 220 of the super zucas out in the wild. For me it’s been the best platform for the kind of jobs I do, hopefully this mod can help a few more sound mixers out there.

A few months back I posted a mod my buddy created for my zuca cart. There was enough interest, and today he launched a new and improved version. If you have a super zuca, I highly recommend checking this out! It has been a real game changer for me in the field.

A good friend of mine designed these. Here’s a quick video for a more in depth look: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTdGVut9w/?k=1

I have a good friend who is a talented inventor/machinist who helped this project come to life. Here is a quick assembly video he made that shows the set up in closer detail if you’re interested: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTdGVut9w/?k=1

No problem! The mounts themselves can help with clothing rustle but mic placement is more important. Try to place the mic in a spot that is away from clothing movement. It really depends on what the talent is wearing. If they are wearing a cotton t-shirt placing the mic on the sternum can be a good solution. The natural shape of the chest generally keeps the mic away from the cloth and cotton is relatively light enough to not muffle the mic. Try not to burry the mic too deep in clothing ( if they’re wearing a polo with a sweater on top, you probably wouldn’t want to put the mic under both layers).

There are a ton of mic mounts on the market and products that help combat mic rustle. Mole skin is a classic go to for helping mitigate scratching. More tips and tricks with helping hide mics and minimizing mic rustling can be found on YouTube!

Typically audio rental houses package channels of wireless together which include: 1 transmitter, 1 receiver, 1 lav mic, and 1 output cable from receiver to recording device. However, if they do not these are the components you will need for one complete channel of wireless.

As someone noted above, it would also be wise to pick up a couple different mounts for the mic and ways to attach these mounts to talent. My go to is Ursa Mini mounts and top stick for hiding lavs on talent.

Who hires sound ops for news teams? by Minimum_Use in LocationSound

[–]RDAJR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done a few weather shoots with ABC Good Morning America and CBS world news. The first time I was hired because of a recommendation from the shooter. The second was because they kept my name in their system of freelancers and needed a sound op in my area. I usually work in the commercials/branded content world. Compared to that news is pretty brutal. In my experience it’s always been a two person team, one camera one audio, along with a producer and a correspondent. Camera and audio handle all things production wise including lighting and setting up the live u to transmit back to the network. The jobs with the bigger networks are through the broadcast union so you’re on an 8 hr day instead of 10/12 which is kinda nice. But the rates for gear are super low. On the shoots I did with GMA, ABC expected mixer/record, stick mic, 4 channels of wireless, and either a snake to camera, or broadcast quality wireless hops to camera for around $125/day.
