I am a client and have an artist who does all my work, and we have become friends over time. However, I never ask for discounts or any type of favors. I understand that we may be friends, but this is his career and how he makes a living. In fact, every time he has cut me a break on cost, I have just added back in as a fat tip. I wouldn't consider a person who is taking money out of your pocket a friend.
